The Washington Collection, located on the 3rd floor of the Hollis Burke Frissell Library, is a non-circulating special collection "by and about" African-Americans in particular, but also Blacks in all parts of the world.

In the newly-renovated library building, this collection now offers study carrels and public access workstations.

In 1999, a separate rare book collection was established. The Rare Book Room houses titles with publication dates in the 19th century, particularly those dealing with the institution of slavery and early African American literature, as well as other books deemed valuable, such as first editions.

This room also contains a rare pamphlet collection dealing with racial issues. The Rare Book Room is not open to the public, but is available upon request for research.

The Washington Collection continues to provide resource materials for classes taught during the academic year. These courses are primarily from the English, History, Political Science, and Philosophy Departments.
