Over two years ago the first reports came in that director Amir Bar-Lev was putting together a documentary about the Grateful Dead that counts Martin Scorsese as an executive producer. The long awaited world premiere of the film is finally in sight as Long Strange Trip will be screened at Sundance 2017.
Deadline reports that Amir Bar-Lev’s film will be among the documentaries to have their world premieres at the Park City, Utah festival between January 19 – 29. “The tale of The Grateful Dead is inspiring, complicated, and downright messy. A tribe of contrarians, they made art out of open-ended chaos and inadvertently achieved success on their own terms. Never-before-seen footage and interviews offer this unprecedented and unvarnished look at the life of the Dead,” reads a description from Deadline.
While back in May Roger Friedman stated the film would be a four hour mini series, there’s no word on the length or format of the film within Deadline’s report. Friedman’s post included the news Eric Eisner, Nicholas Koskoff and Justin Kreutzmann are the main producers of the documentary with Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions are aboard to executive produce. Alex Blavatnik is also a main producer of the film. Stay tuned for more information as Sundance approaches.
