The Island Storm has announced Friday the signing of former Arizona State Sun Devils phenom Jahii Carson.

Carson, who played two seasons for the Sun Devils averaged 18.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.6 in his Sophomore year before declaring for the 2014 NBA draft.

The 5-foot-10 point guard was projected by many to be drafted early in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft and has since had several workouts with NBA teams, including the Toronto Raptors.

After a challenging season in 2015-16, Storm Head coach Joe Salerno welcomed the new offensive weapon to his roster.

“He’s a prolific scorer from the point guard position, but he’s also someone who can create shots for others. His ability to breakdown defenders, get into the lane and either score or find open teammates is second to none. He’s a gifted player and obviously we are excited he’s signed with us.”

After playing last season professionally in Turkey, Carson is happy to be relocating to Canada.

“I’ve done my homework on this league and this team. I think it’s a great fit for me, I’m really excited for the opportunity to play in Canada.”

Carson, who hails from Mesa, Arizona, had a stellar career at Mesa High that saw him shatter season records for points per game (32.2) and assists per game (6.6) during his senior year.

After graduating in 2012, he took his talents to the Pac-12 Conference to play with the hometown Sun Devils, the same school that produced NBA all-star James Harden.

He was selected as the Pac-12 Freshmen of the Year in 2013 as well as being named to the All-Pac 12 first team his freshman and sophomore seasons.

After going undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft, Carson later signed with the Houston Rockets for the 2014 NBA Summer League where he averaged 8.8 and 1.8 assists per game, before signing to play overseas in Australia’s top league for the 2014-15 season.

Carson said he’s a natural scorer, who gets his shots by putting pressure on and attacking the opponent’s defense.

“I’m a scorer. I like to score and put pressure on the defence, but I can slow things down in the half court, and then put pressure on their defence to get my shot.”

The Carson signing is not only good for the Storm, but is great for the rest of the league, Salerno commented.

“Jahii signing is great for the NBL Canada. It just shows that the league continues to grow and is able to attract some of the best players from major college programs.”

Salerno believes Carson will win over the hearts of Storm fans once they see him in action.

“I think Jahii will be an instant fan favourite because of the high-flying athletic ability he possess, and the charisma he brings to the court. He has the potential to become one of the most exciting players in the NBL this season.”

Fans are reminded that Storm season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at the Eastlink Centre Box Office or by calling 902-629-6625.
