Desperado

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now.
Oh, you're a hard one, I know that you got your reasons,
these things that are pleasin' you can hurt you somehow.
Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy,
she'll beat you if she's able,
you know the queen of hearts is always your best bet.
Now it seems to me some fine things
have been laid upon your table,
but you only want the ones that you can't get.

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger,
your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home.
And freedom, oh, freedom, well, that's just some people talkin',
your prison is walkin' through this world all alone.
Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine,
it's hard to tell the nighttime from the day.
You're losin' all your highs and lows.
Ain't it funny how the feelin' goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate.
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you.
You better let somebody love you,
you better let somebody love you
before it's too late.

The young man sat by himself at the table facing the stage. Why was he alone? Maybe he had lost the charm that could get any woman. ‘Templeton Peck, you’re getting old.’ The man said to himself. A fat little man waddles on stage and snatches the microphone from the man on stage. He clears his throat. "Ahem!" The crowd grows quiet. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are proud to present an up and coming musician. Please welcome Ms. Chely Diane Smith!" Chely Diane Smith walks out on stage to the house applauding.

Chely takes a bow. The crowd is clapping and hollering so loud that she momentarily looses her concentration and she focuses on the young man who is deeply depressed. For a split second, she had locked eyes with the handsome stranger. Called back to reality by the crowd’s reaction when the fat man left the stage, Chely picks up her guitar and sits down on the stool. She adjusts the microphone to her height. "Wow! You all her at the Silver Diamond are a friendly bunch."

Her eyes lock on the young man who does respond to her greeting. He sits back in his chair and casually sips his beer. "The song that I’m going to sing for you all tonight is called Desperado, which was made popular by The Eagles and Clint Black. I hope that the little desperado in all of us enjoys the song and realizes how important they mean to everyone around him or her." The crowd claps.

Chely begins to sing. "Desperado, why don't you come to your senses? You been out ridin' fences for so long now. Oh, you're a hard one, I know that you got your reasons," Face was lost in thought. ‘What have I done in my life that was so important?’ he asked himself. ‘I have help people fight adversity throughout the world. Even put up with Hannibal and The Jazz.’ "These things that are pleasin' you can hurt you somehow. Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy, she'll beat you if she's able, you know the queen of hearts is always your best bet. Now it seems to me some fine things have been laid upon your table," Face started to think of Rena and of Ellen. Rena was one of his many girlfriends. She loved him for him. Ellen Bancroft was his half sister. Even though they had just met, he cared for her so much. Everyone on the team could see that. "But you only want the ones that you can't get."

Face wanted to shake his head free of Rena and of Ellen. Still, the picture of Ellen standing over their father’s grave was on his mind. He mouthed, "Ellen." Chely continues. "Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger, your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home. And freedom, oh, freedom," ‘Freedom? Sure Stockwell promises our full pardons but will he ever come through?’ he asks himself. ‘Maybe it’s all well the same that The A-Team is "dead."’ "Well, that's just some people talkin', your prison is walkin' through this world all alone. Don't your feet get cold in the winter time? The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine, it's hard to tell the nighttime from the day. You're losin' all your highs and lows. Ain't it funny how the feelin' goes away?"

before it's too late." As the piano dies down, the crowd begins to clap. Face joins in. Chely takes a bow. She exits the stage. Face still is clapping when he notices that Chely has left the stage. He makes his way backstage.

A big bulky guy stops him. "Who are you?" he asks. "I need to talk to Chely." Face said to the man who reminded him of BA. "No one gets in here without a pass or without knowing Ms. Duke." Just as Face was about to get slam dunked on his head, Chely opens her door. "James, let him speak his peace." James looks at Chely. He turns his attention back to Face. "You got five minutes." He says. Chely gently pushes James towards the bar. "James, go get me a club soda. And take your time." She says as she closes the door.

She looks at the man who had captivated her since she was on the stage. "What’s your name?" she asks walking over to the couch. "My name is John. Who was the big guy?" Face asks. Chely pulls him a chair out. "Have a seat John." John sits down. "The big guy as you put it is James. Call him an extra insurance policy. He watches my back." John becomes intoxicated with Chely’s beauty. "Answer me a question will you?" Chely asks. "I’ll give it my best try." Came the response.

"Your last name wouldn’t happen to be Smith, would it?" Chely asks. Face started to panic. ‘How do you know Hannibal, lady?’ he asks himself. Chely keeps her focus on the young man. He does not shake. She liked this guy. "I’m very sorry. My last name is not Smith. My last name is Williams." Face said hoping and praying that this con worked. "My mistake, then." She looks at the clock on the wall. "Would you care for a drink?" she asks. "I’m sorry but I have to leave now. I just wanted to meet you and to say thank you." Chely looks at the young man funny.

"Thank you for what?" she asks. "I have been going through some personal problems and your song help me to get things in perspective." Kissing her hand, Face says, "Good night, Chely. Good luck in Nashville." With that said, the young man who had just appeared in her life was gone like the wind. James walked back to Chely’s dressing room and hands her the club soda. "Who was that man, Ms. Duke?" he asks. Chely looks at James and says, "I believe that man was my desperado."
