I would file Shorts comments under "brutally honest," but not "slanderous." |

Short's argument is refuted?> No, that would be a Fallacy of Composition (or Division or both, depending how it's stated). But on the other hand, does Short HAVE an argument to refute? He's got a fact (the gender ratings gap), and a kind of claim (that the reason for the gap is in some way biological). But does he have an argument to support that claim? |

Nigel knows he has a minus score v Judit so why write an article claiming women cannot play chess. He didn't.
In a nutshell it reads that women are not attracted to chess like men because he thinks our brains are wired up differently. And on average (Judit is far above an average female chess player and should not really be included) men are better at chess than women. There is something about the game that attracts more men to it than women. That 'something' that bites into the man and the game becomes an obsession. That 'something' is for others to discuss and find. Nigel, not being a woman will not have the answer. We need a female non-player to tells us why. My wife is a genuine non-player. She does not even know how the pieces move. She thinks the game is stupid and comes out with comments like "look what it has done to you." ,all my chess friends are certifiable and after the one tournament she attended stated it's full of old men who have not grown up. (I'll get her to write the next NIC article.)
But what ever it is it won't be because women are any less intelligent than men. |
