Great showing for Melancholia (which is currently available on Video on Demand on cable, and opens in big cities later this month). The film could win significant critics’ group awards coming up – it is right at the top of von Trier’s work.
One note – look at the great showing for the Dardennes’ The Kid With a Bike. Yet Belgium did not submit it for the FL Oscar, choosing instead a Flemish language film (Bullhead) because apparently in that country they rotate between French and Flemish language films to keep the peace. Yet another example of how absurd the national submission system for that award is.
Nice to see ELENA get recognition. This understated but powerful performance is worth seeing.
Michel Piccoli rocked in Habemus Papam — nice to see him get recognized, even if the movie remains puzzlingly underrated.
You didn’t mention the fact that the great Danish actor, Mads
Mikkelsen is going to receive a lifetime achievement award at
this event.
