'Gilmore Girls,' the movie?

Nothing stands the test of time like a loving, old-fashioned mother-daughter relationship.

Lauren Graham, formerly known to the world as Lorelai Gilmore from "Gilmore Girls," told Vanity Fair that a movie based on the long-running series is definitely a possibility.

“What’s funny to me is that in all these years, no one ever talked about it except the fans,” she told Vanity Fair. “But now people with power, people who could actually make it happen, are talking about it.”

However, Graham worries that the movie could be potentially boring, and that the format of the show might not translate to the big screen.

When asked about what misadventures Rory and Lorelai could get into, Graham said it would be hard to say, as "Gilmore Girls" was never a plot-driven television show.

“That is what might be uncovered in a two-hour movie,” she said. “You’d be like, ‘Wait a minute, they just talk and make fun of things. This is a terrible movie.’”

But, she added, if "Gilmore Girls" is going to be turned into a feature film, it should happen sooner rather than later.

“I think it could be good, but I wonder if we’ve waited too long,” Graham said. “I don’t want to be walking around the town square with a cane.”

Hey there. It's great to hear that there are people who are brainstorming to do a movie. But I don't want something like SATC. No need in such big screen movies for any series. So they should think about a tv-movie oder mini-series. Or another season, because the very last episode is a cliffhanger. There is more, everyone was making his/her own ending.

Well I think they have a lot to tell. Of course Lor and Luke HAVE to be together!!! There's no other possibility for them. Rory could end up in Washington. As we all know Obama ended there too 🙂 Meeting there .... Maybe Dean? Or Logan, Jess and Dean. And in the end she tells them all that she focus on her career, because she is "only" 24 and feels way too young for this. Or sometime back she already met someone and tells them, that she met her soulmate ... and he is the guy who would be the perfect mixture from L-J-D 🙂

There are a tons of ideas how to finally "end" the serie.

AND PLEASE LISTEN TO US FANS, BECAUSE WE WANT THEM BACK 🙂

    love and bb from germany

I must confess that I'm addicted to this show. I've seen it several times on TV, but not all 7 seasons, mostly the first 4. Now I'm watching it day and night on DVDs, though I have a lot of work to do for myself. I would fancy another 1-2-3-4 seasons than a movie, but a movie is better than nothing. Thumbs up from Romania (Europe)!

The world needs a Gilmore Movie. It has loyal fans and even more new fans in reruns. I have never cared wnough to ask for more of a series than I have for The Gilmore Girls so many possiblities and I miss the story and characters Please hurry up with this it needes to be done. I started watching this show in 2006. My family bought all seven seasons for me. I do not watch right now put to know that I have at my finger tips is very calming for me. I was very depressed when I started watching
this show everything else like Law and Order were good show but not an answer for someone who is burdened with depression. I can truly say this show helped out of the funk I was in..

Hi there! This is Natalia from Spain (Europe) What I've got to say that fans/supporters of Girlmore Girls We're still demanding a continuation The series is still broadcasting all over the world so that means still alive. That it's, it's not too late for a continuation. I'd rather an 8th season than a film. Girlmore Girls continuation would need more that 2 hours. There is still a lot to say Last season just left us like wondering, wishing.. What is good news is that Alexis and Lauren are opened to a film and people who can make it happen are thinking about it. But who are they? How long it will take? What can we/I do to make it happen? Any suggestion or news about it are welcomed.

I think a movie is a great idea. But, it should be a made for TV movie and have a real ending to it. The ending to the show itself was disappointing. They should have Lorelai and Luke getting married. A winter wedding, since that was her favorite time of year and Luke always gave Lorelai what she wanted. Rory coming home from the campaign trail and taking over the Stars Hollow bookstore because the owner is retiring. Or, maybe a double wedding Luke and Lorelai, Rory and Jess? I don't know, but there has to be a better ending that what they had.

I have been a die hard Gilmore Girls fan since the series started, i absolutely love that show. I own all 7 seasons on DVD, i have probably watched each season 3 times. I just love the writing the acting the actors the whole story line in general. I was so upset when they decided to end the show. I felt it had at least 3 more seasons to go. This show could of been like 7th heaven and lasted 11 seasons but i would of been happy with 10. There was so much left of the story to tell, what ever happened to Rory's dreams? What happened to Loralie and her man trouble? Would Loralie and Emily ever have a decent relationship. What ever happened with Paris did she ever marry Doyle? Will Rory change her mind and decide to marry Logan? Will it be to late? What is Jess doing now? Where is he living? Do he and Rory ever cross paths again? What about Sookie and Jackson and their kids? Dose she ever have those 4 kids? And then even Dean he Rory broke up and we never saw him again. Did he find someone else? Get married? Or how about Christopher and GG how are they? Is gg with Sherry or Chris? Do Loralie and Chris still talk? Good terms? And Lane and Zack and their twins, how are they? Did they ever make it in Rock and Roll? They could bring Rory back to Chiltion for a reunion. Someone in Stars Hollow could pass away and everyone could meet up at the funeral. There are so many possibilities, i could go on and on. I know some feel they closed the show just fine, but i have to disagree. I would love for their to be a tv movie. Just end the show on a high note, something upbeat and fun. what gilmore girls is all about. Plus im sure theres a ton of you out there that would just love to hear some of the off beat funny things Loralie and rory brought to us. Plus their fast talking pop culture references always were a hit. You couldnt go wrong with a gilmore girls movie. I really hope they decide to this, and the actors get on board for one more run through stars hollow. It would be worth it.

I gilmore girls movie would be AWESOME, simply AWESOME!
Because of how ambiguously the show ended, the movie could literally go in any possible direction. Luke and Loreliegh could finally get married... Rory could be shown at the beginning doin her journalism for the Obama campaign as said on the shwo but then it could segway into something else... she could run into jess at an assigment! that would be amazing! Moreover, making it bak for loreleighs wedding... probablly in the town square? And then friday night dinner with luke rory and loreleigh? lol ohhhhh the possibilities 🙂

I agree! I love the show! And I think there should be more. There should be some kind of reunion. Rory's 10 year reunion from High School would be a good way to bring everybody back to Stars Hollow. All I know is that there has to be something more.

Well, if they do it, the requirements for me to watch it are the following:
    1) Rory with Marty. Her with Jess is a little incestuous. Logan was annoying and smug, plus would've cheated on her given the first chance. Dean is, well, I just don't care for the Narco pairing.
    2) Lorelai and Luke getting that wedding we were PROMISED by ASP.
    3) NO LOGAN WHATSOEVER!
    4) A little news on what's going on with the Stars Hollow townies, because that last season had a severe lack of them.
    5) NO LOGAN. I can not stress this enough. He ruined the show because Rory turned into a complete and different (and lesser) person when they were together. Really, how smart can you consider yourself to be if you fall for that schmuck's chicanery?
    6) Lorelai knocked up with Luke's twins, like in her dream in the season 3 premiere.
    7) Give Kyon more screen time. I love that nerdy, hot girl.
    8) While you'r at it, more Lane as well.
    9) A Nudist (Marty/Rory) engagement at the end of the film!
    10) TONS of Paris Geller being....well, Paris. She's SOOOOOOOOOO funny!
    11) No Christopher, or his little clone Logan.
    12) Comfortable seats in the theartre. No really, those chairs are too damned close together.
    Okay, that was fun. Yay!

This is my 'default' show as I like to call it. The 7 seasons are on a constant, never-ending cycle here in my house. My husband even finds the show amusing and witty. Many of the quotes are included in our everyday conversation. What I'm trying to say is... GG, WE LOVE YOU!!! Doing a movie would tie up all the loose ends for all us devoted, die-hard fans. Here's the deal...it would be SO awesome if they made a movie...but ONLY if Amy Sherman-Palladino did it. Because she was the original creator of the show and because she knew exactly how she wanted it to end early on (she had always said she had the last 4 words of the show in her head), then SHE should be the one to make the movie. I know that there are a lot of Gilmore Girls fans that were not particularly happy with the ending, or with the seventh season in general, and a lot of fans (like me) feel jipped because most people feel like there were loose ends left to tie up. I think that the movie could be a great success for all of the Gilmore Girls fans out there as long as it would be done right. And the only way that it would be done right is if Amy Sherman-Palladino did it. That's just my opinion. But I can tell you, if she did do a movie, I would just be MORE than happy!

I would like to see a movie – as Lauren said, it will bte interesting to see if the quick dialogue and style will translate to the big screen but I think there is enough that can be done with plot to not worry too far about that: Luke and Lorelai wedding, Rory's career as a journalist, Lane as a mom, Paris as a doctor, perhaps what happened to Jess (2nd book maybe?), etc. etc.

Hope they give the movie idea a go.

Dan, I am SO with you on this! I have always said that Jess & Rory were TOTALLY meant to be – that's the union I've ALWAYS waited to see happen. Logan just wasn't right for Rory... as Lorelai pointed out to Rory after she turned Logan down, she knew it was the right decision when Rory waited so long to MAKE the decision. She should not want to hesitate with the right guy! Jess just needed to grow up... and he did! So, let's see THAT in the movie – can I get a huzzah?

I always hated Logan and wasn't such a fan of Jesse. I did like Dean but always hoped Rory would date Marty, her friend from Yale.

A movie or TV special would be neat but I don't think all the loose ends need to be tied up.

The writing and characters of the series were wonderful.

As for those who say people don't talk that fast: I do. Perhaps it is from being from NYC or having a high IQ, but it is possible.

It doesn't have to be a wedding or a birth. It might be more comically interesting to make a crisis with the town. L&L could already be married.

My prissy ex girlfriend watched that show all the time. She would giggle annoyingly at some of the most dull dialogue I've ever heard on TV. How much can they cramp into an episode by having all the actors converse at an unnaturally rapid pace? I've never watched a show with so many uninteresting characters. I'd rather stab myself than squirm through their movie. My new wife would never put me through that. We watch Family Guy and South Park together, like creative intellectuals do.

Could this really happen?!?! I hope so! I was so upset the very last 2 episodes of the series!! I was angry with Rory! The fact that she didn't even discuss the proposal with Lane, Paris or the artsy girls was absurd! Not 1 word! Logan changed for the better. She made him want to be a better man. Rory humiliated him, embarassed herself and everyone was left feeling awkward even me and I was on my couch! She should have said YES at the party regardless it was awful! They could have discussed a long engagement, where she could pursue her career. Logan always supported her and she was a total B*&%@. I agree that the writing took an obvious dip and was truly saddened by it all. I loved Luke and Lorelai getting together, she finally realized he was always about her, even if he had a rough patch. Let's face it Lorelai had a couple patches!!! Like Christopher who was always too good to be true. He wanted to make-up the years he was absent and make her love him or feel lucky he was there. THE FANS NEED CLOSURE! I dont want to be bitter anymore!! Plus I also realized I might be a little to into this.....I guess I needed to vent LOL

I 100% agree with your post. This is exactly how I feel. I'm still bitter about the last 2 episodes as well and how Rory treated Logan. When he had no jobs lined up and she was interviewing, he said that he would follow her. But when the roles reversed, she only thought of herself. I also hated how the writers brought it down to a love vs career choice for Rory. Why couldn't she have had both?

Of all the snot they find to remake movies, I think this one would be a great choice. Keep it small and dialogue driven (for a change – haha), don't spend a lot of money – and no Logan, Luke's brother, Sally Struthers (!!!) or Kirk and Taylor. We want Lorilie and Luke, Rory and some perfect guy. Toss in Kim and even her mom, lots of Stars Hollow, Michelle, Suki and the Inn... Oh – and Richard and Emily. They did wonders with their roles!!!
Maybe Luke's daughter, too. She should be about Rory's age, when the story began? Maybe she could get a magical package in the mail... I think it would be great. Give everyone a nice exit story, like FNL did!
Then, let's give Veronica Mars a real sendoff, too. Why can't they do small movies for the cost of 2 hours of TV? Have the cast work for points (but spare no money on the writing!. No exotic sets – they could all be filmed in Vancouver!
Instead, we get these awful remakes, on a big budget. Direct to rental movies must make money. Except for the cast, these shows should make money, too. In fact – don't even bother showing them in theaters. We want to watch GG at home, anyway!

Yes!!! That would make me a very happy girl. I've been a huge fan of the series since day one, and hated the way the series ended. Too many questions left opened. If they do it though, they need to do it right. ASP needs to come back to help write the script, and I think it should be a made for TV movie on like the family channel or something, not a feature film in the theater.

We've been waiting for this for years! I used to have GG season premiere parties with pizza, chinese food, Twinkies and of course, coffee in big mugs. I watch the reruns regularly and would love to see where their lives went. I agree with the Jesse camp....couldn't stand Logan. I also agree that the Pallandinos have to be in charge of writing. Please bring it on, sooner than later. None of us are getting any younger! 🙂

Yes please! I haven't been this psyched about a movie since the "Star Trek" reboot. Don't get any ideas about recasting though. Even the characters with fewer lines are perfect – honestly, who could ever out-Kirk Kirk? Someone mentioned Rory and Lorelei being pregnant at the same time – I love it! And of course they'd have to go into labor at the same time and Rory's husband (Jesse?) would be on the way, leaving poor Luke running between the two of them, both screaming out "Father of the Bride 2" references in between contractions.

This was one of the WORST shows to have lasted as long as it did. All these characters did was talk, talk, TALK., about NOTHING, and make some of the most unfunny observations about life imaginable. You just wanted to strangle them, or press the mute button. It would take the ghost of Stanley Kubrick to possibly make this godawful show into a watchable movie.

Oh my gosh if I see another vampire show/movie or another husband/wife spy show/movie I am going into a coma. I rely on my daily GG reruns for great dialogue and interesting relationships. Great banter, great heart, wonderful supporting characters. In reruns I am floored at actually how good Kelly Bishop's Emily Gilmore is. Can she deliver a line or what? Just classic. Kirk is hilarious...love that he wants to be Luke. Miss Patty? Babette and her tall husband and tiny house? Come on...let's just make this sucker. Go for it Palladino (s)!

My friends and I (40+) loved the running banter and the inside jokes. My daughter(now 13) loved that not every girl was popular or perfectly put together. We also loved that feelings got hurt and bestfriends disagreed and got mad. It connected with all of us that families come in all shapes and sizes. Romance and relationships are hard at any age and the Gilmore Girls proved that many times. It would be a great movie!

Time to hook-up Michel (wink), as well. Please no 3D – we just need a good old fashioned movie to catch up on the haunts and happenings in Stars Hollow.

YES, definately a movie!! This show was the best I have seen in a long, long time, and I was so upset when it ended. Personally, I think it was a beautiful example of what a mother/daughter relationship should be like and families could learn alot from it. There were alot of life's lessons in this show, and very thought out resolutions on both sides. Besides being humerous and witty, the characters were also shown with raw emotion, We definately need closure to the Lorelei/Luke love story and Rory's challenging career choice.

If there is a God in Heaven there will not be a Gilmore Girls movie. I could not bear to listen to the robotic acting of these people another minute which is why, of course, I do not watch it. I would rather pull my toe nails from my toes with a pair of pliers. The only thing that would make this movie good is an R rating and lots of nudity. Just so you know, do buy popcorn for this movie. You could potentially choke on it as you fall asleep. The only bathroom breaks you would need would be for throwing up. You look up 'horrible' in the dictionary and it says 'See Gilmore Girls'. I could go on for days. Making this movie means that Hollywood "Jumped the Shark"!

I was a BIG GG's fan for the first several seasons. Kimberly(Alexis's first name) and Lauren became money and power hungry and IMO that's what made the last 2 1/2 season blow chunks. I have since refused to watch anything with either of them in it. My boycott of the two will stand for this movie if it ever comes into existence. Get paid for what you are worth, but don't ruin a series because you aren't getting your way. I'll bet 5.00 it flops. it's been too many years since the end of the show for anyone to care.

So let me just say this was the only show I really loved to watch. Growing up I only had my mom so it was nice seeing a show were a family wasn't perfect.
Anyway, I agree that there SHOULD be a movie made. There were so many things just kinda left off. Lorelei finally being able to have her wedding, or where or what Rori ends up doing, you could always through Jesse back in there last time he was in the show he wasnt doing that bad for himself. Maybe this is where Rori goes on a trip and maybe Lorelei and Luke go and bring April. The movie can actually have potential but would need to be released soon. And I'm pretty sure you left a lot of people unsatified with the way the season ended. Well hope you make the write decision.

PLEASE DO A MOVIE!!! AND... if you do a movie the script Must be from Amy-Sherman Palladino (sp?). Her departure from the show was PAINfully obvious in the last seasons writing. AND we need more Lorelai & Luke in the movie. The series pilot started with a hint of their feelings for each other and we went from season to season waiting for them to hook up. They finally do, but then break-up only to find they really belong together, but the series finale was such a disappointment in that story line. It was an after thought. It really sucked big time. After waiting for them to get back together all we got was a sad little kiss at the end of the show!!!

I totally agree!!!! I am currently watching this series again (for about the 10 millionth time). My ex-roomate owned them on dvd and I made sure I owned all of them before she moved out. Through the whole show i rooted for Luke and Lorelai to hook up. Did the happy dance when they finally did. The end of the series was a huge disappointment for me. After all the wedding planning that she did and the huge buildup for them to get back together all there was was that kiss. It was a great kiss and all but I would LOOOVE to see the wedding. Please do a movie or tv movie/tv miniseries. I am keeping my fingers x'd.

GG is the best tv show I've ever seen. I hate that it ended and that only discovered it after it went off air. I love Lauren, Alexis, Keiko, Scott and the entire cast. Even Kirk!

The show really deserves a decent ending aside from the sires finale we had. I'm ALL IN for the movie provided they retain the same actors and keep the small town feel. I love this show!

How about a 10 – 12 episode mini-series on TV? Networks like TNT and USA have short season series and "The Gilmore Girls" would be perfect for this format. They could take their time and let us get to know the characters again – Sookie, Lane and and all the rest.

Now that is a good idea. USA would probably reach more people, but I bet whoever owns it now (Disney? Time Warner?) would want it on their own channel. Maybe ABC Family would be ok, since the reruns play on there. I like the idea of giving a bit of time for us to be reintroduced to the characters.

It would be great to see an opening scene, where Lorelai is in the birthing room with Rory, and she's telling her "the story" of how she gave birth to her, and reminiscing over the years of their relationship – and Rory is screaming in pain from labor, but laughing, too! – & then the movie actually tells the story of what led up to Rory's pregnancy, and all that's happened since she left Stars Hollow. It could end with the new little "gilmore girl" being born, being named "Lorelai" and the cycle continues! Yes, I agree... it would be a great movie!

I miss the show, I don't have the seasons on DVD or otehrwise but catch when I can on days off from work or home sick 😦 I would watch them with my son and now my daughter as she is running around the house and playing 🙂 A movie would be great to help close the series or begin a new one with the proposed new addition to the Gilmore clan.

Yes, but it should be both Lorelai and Rory giving birth–Lorelai to Luke's baby, and Rory to JESS's. We don't want anymore LOGAN. ugh

      September 16, 2010 at 2:11 pm | Report abuse |
    • Liz

Yeah! You've got 3 years to cover since the finale, so through the flashbacks you'd see Luke and Lorelai's wedding (Jesse would be there of course) and then Rory's high-powered career, maybe she's in D.C. now and runs into Logan. L&L could have a baby which of course would bring Jesse back again, and so on. Point being that the audience doesn't know which direction Rory went romantically until the father shows up right as the baby's being born. Then let the screaming and wailing in the theater begin from whichever camp loses, Team Logan or Team Jesse!

Although 3 years only makes her, what, 24? That might still be too young for career oriented Rory to be starting a family so you could do the same premise, except it's Lorelai helping Rory get dressed for her wedding. Same scenario, don't know who she's marrying until the wedding starts. That would also give the opportunity to see the whole town as they arrive for the wedding.

The most fans can bank on is a movie, if it ever happens, but just let the show RIP. It's over. All TV shows come and go; they can't live on forever...

I totally think this should be a movie, starting where the series left off. Do Luke and Lorelie get married? What happened with Rory after the Barack campaign ended, did she end up meeting someone new or did Logan wait for her after all since she never really put the "Love Rocket" away or in a Logan box in the closet to be with the "Dean and Max" boxes, she left it sitting on her dresser which can leave a hit of waiting.

So let's get working on making this a movie.

I own and watched the entire 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls, and I have never been so sad for anything to end ever before in my life! Especially the way they ended season 7, that was such a cliffhanger ending, that is NO way to end such an amazing series as Gilmore Girls! That was a SEASON finale, not a SERIES finale, and I'm appalled they haven't yet made a season 8, this is one of those shows that could EASILY have more than enough fans and viewers to last a good 3 more seasons, at the VERY least! I am totally for the Gilmore Girls movie, in fact I think it is a necessity, not to mention we NEED more seasons! The show is not NEARLY done being over yet! Us die-hard Gilmore Girls fans such as myself need some closure! The way that season 7 ended left absolutely no parting grace what so ever, left open to many "what if's" and "i wonders". For example, for the ENTIRE 7 seasons we have been WAITING to see Luke and Lorelei, married, moved in together and having kids, having their own family...we are being deprived, and we NEED a Gilmore Girls movie AND more seasons!

Would love to see a GG movie, but would be happy if it were a Made for TV movie also. Would like one last long look at Stars Hollow and their favorite players. Lorelei & Luke could finally get it together, and what would happen if Logan, Dean & Jess all showed up for Rory? would be interesting. and oh yes – Miss patty definitely needs to find a man. LOL
