There's a cool new development in summer singles: they no longer need to be sunny. In fact, the wetter the better. "Umbrella," the first single off Rihanna's ragingly good third album, may be her strongest ditty yet, and that's saying something considering her run of past summer chartbusters. More stylish than "S.O.S." (from A Girl Like Me) and more interesting than "Pon de Replay" (from Music of the Sun), "Umbrella" barrels forward with big, brawny drums and a hot but haunted-sounding vocal. From there, the upbeat numbers chug forth like chilled pina colada mix into a blender: "Breakin' Dishes" trades skillfully on a recent vogue for man-directed venom, and "Shut Up and Drive" borrows "S.O.S."-style from the '80s New Order song "Blue Monday." Both are irresistible. So, too, are a couple of late tracks. "Rehab" and "Lemme Get That," both produced by Timbaland, prove that being an island girl is no barrier to holding one's own amid a sizzling stew of urban beats. In fact, it's a boon--one that'll register with pop music fans instantly. -Tammy La Gorce

Although some elements of the big hit "Umbrella" can be annoying, it is undoubtedly a summer song she will be well remembered for, and the video is close to outstanding. "Breaking Dishes" is delightful (apart from the somewhat juvenile intro with what sounds like a girls cheerleading squad, which frankly limits the appeal of the rest of the song). The lyrics are smart, witty and fun. "Rehab" is a good effort and "Questions Existing" is well done if a bit hard to pin down, but I hope she focuses more on the danceable, mixable, memorable, and catchy songs that undoubtedly be her mark on music.
However, Rihanna has the potential to break away from the girl pop music that includes the likes of Ciara, Kelly Clarkson and Fergie, and join the ranks of Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Shakira, and before her unfortunate implosion, Britney Spears, and so many others. Not that these ladies are the best vocals (Christina being by far the strongest voice), but are really good entertainers where you get your monies worth. [Madonna and Janet Jackson are incredible entertainers, by the way.]
In other words, she has the potential to be amazing. And, although she has had other cds before "Good Girl," this one is a good step in that direction, partly because she is expanding her range. There are a few tracks ["Shut Up and Drive"] that call into question whether she wants to be a "rock girl" or a "soul girl" unless she is managed in such a way that she can do both. That is a feat VERY few can master (though I am huge fan of New Order). Pink tried it and had to choose (and still walks the line a bit from time to time). Gwen Stephani does as well (noting collaborations with Eve). It, unfortunately may limit her overall audience unless she pics her next writers, arrangers, producers very well. The team up with Jay-Z is having good results.
Bottom Line: A very good cd with some fun and memorable tracks, surpasses many competitors, but needs a bit of direction, focus, and polish. She is indeed getting better and those other girls are "goin' git it!"
