JOHNSTON CITY - The death of a 3-year-old boy who was bitten several times Saturday night by at least one of his family's dogs is under investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff's Department, the Williamson County Coroner's Office and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

The boy was attacked about 200 feet from his home, after apparently pushing out a screen in a bedroom window, then crawling outside while his family thought he was sleeping.

Gabrial Reese Mandrell's family called 911 at 8:03 p.m. Saturday, saying the child wasn't breathing and that CPR was being performed on him, authorities said. Deputies and EMTs responded to the family home at 13093 Willow Pond Road in Johnston City.

Family members told deputies they had checked on Gabrial at about 7:30 p.m. and he appeared to be asleep. When they checked again at 8 p.m., they found he had crawled out the window. They found him outside, badly injured. The boy was taken by ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, where he was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m.

The family had three outside dogs, two pit bull mixes and one collie mix, which were running loose. Williamson County Animal Control took all three dogs; they will remain in the custody of Animal Control until the investigation into the incident is completed and their fate determined.

An Evansville, Ind., pathologist performed an autopsy late Sunday afternoon at Williamson County Morgue. The pathologist determined the boy died as the result of blood loss from multiple dog bites. The death has been ruled an accident.
