Over the years there have been hundreds of talented athletes who have had the opportunity to compete at Colorado State. This year seven of theses athletes will join legends such as Thurman "Fum" McGraw, Jack Christiansen and Amy Van Dyken among others in the Colorado State Hall of Fame and Hall of Honors.
Hall of Fame inductees include Mattias Borrman (Track and Field), Kristin (Elliot) Fox (Swimming), Lavern (Nick) Kohls (Football and Wrestling), Sarah (Fredstrom) Secrest (Softball), and Brady Smith (Football). Hall of Honor inductees are Brian Bedard (Track) and John Mattos (Swimming).
The 2005 Hall of Fame Banquet takes place Friday night, Nov. 11, at the Hilton of Fort Collins. A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., with the banquet to follow at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and available by calling 970-491-5067.
Mattias Borrman competed in Track and Field at CSU from 1993-96. At Colorado State Borrman earned a bachelor's degree in History. He received WAC Academic All-Conference and USAT&F; All-American Academic Awards. Some of his major athletic accomplishments include qualifying for the NCAA championships seven times, four school records and the High Point Scorer award from the 1996 WAC Championships. Borrman also added to his accomplishments by winning the Swedish National Championships in Discus.
Kristin (Elliot) Fox competed in swimming at Colorado State from 1992-97. Over her four-year career at CSU she was honored as a four-time letterwinner, three-time Academic All-WAC performer. Elliot was part of the WAC-winning 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley honoree. She holds six WAC records and, in 1996, was named WAC Swimmer of the Year. She also holds the records for the 100 and 200 backstrokes and was a five-time All-American.
Lavern Kohls competed in both Football and Wrestling while attending Colorado State. His senior year he finished second at the NCAA Wrestling Championships and was named to the All-American team. In football, Kohls was named to the All-Conference Team his senior year.
Sarah (Fredstrom) Secrest played shortstop for Colorado State from 1994-98. During her career she was named the top freshman player for the Western Athletic Conference, First Team All-American, All-WAC (3 years), All-Region, and MVP of the San Jose Tournament. Sarah was also named Sportswoman of the Year and won the US West Award. She also set nine CSU career records, including games started and games played, as well as season and career records for at bats, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, slugging percentage and RBIs. Sarah played one year of professional softball in 1999 with the Virginia Roadsters.
Brady Smith was a defensive end for Colorado State from 1991-95. Smith was selected in the third round (70th pick overall) in the 1996 NFL draft. Despite injuries in both 1992 and 1993, Smith received honorable mention all-conference in 1994. In his final season at CSU he set the school's career quarterback sack record with 27. He also set the single-season sack record with 15. Smith now plays in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons.
Hall of Honor winner Brian Bedard has coached at his Alma Mater, Colorado State, for 17 seasons. Among his accomplishments as a coach he received the Mountain Regional and NCAA Division I Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005. Bedard has coached 36 conference champions, 25 All-American performances and two national champions. Bedard has earned Colorado State's throwing program national recognition. Bedard was a track athlete from 1983-88 and finished as the conference runner-up in the discus and also placed in shot.
John Mattos, also a Hall of Honor award winner is heading into his 25th year as the current swimming and water polo coach. Since he started in 1981, Mattos athletes have set 101 school records. He has also coached 13 All-Americans, eight honorable mention All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and has taken 65 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships. Mattos was named NCAA Division I Coach of the Year in 1994. He was also the assistant coach for the U.S. World Championship team and later the Head Coach of the National Junior Elite Training Camp team for Olympic development. During his time as an athlete at Colorado State he was a conference champion and an NCAA All-American finalist in both the 100 and 200 backstroke.
