Dr Stephanie Pace Marshall

Dr Stephanie Pace Marshall is the founding president of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, IL. She received a BA from Queens College in New York, a Master of Arts Degree in Curriculum and Philosophy from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Industrial Relations from Loyola University of Chicago. She also holds an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and an Honorary Doctorate of Sciences.

Dr. Marshall served as President of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development International, and was also the founding President of the National Consortium for Specialized Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology.

She is currently a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Advanced Study of Mathematics and Science. Dr. Marshall is a member of the State of the World Forum, and is a fellow in the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in London, England.

Dr Marshall is a renowned international educator, educational reformer, author and inspirational leader. Her article ‘A New Story of Learning and Schooling’, from The School Administrator, December 1999, has been foundational in developing South Australian teachers and leaders' understandings of the needed changes for education in the 21C. 

In this and subsequent writing, she provides a clear picture of the embedded assumptions and views of learning that hold us to old ways of teaching in schools.  She shows us the critical role of emotion and engagement in the learner's meaning making process.  Stephanie takes us back to the humanity of learning - her work is inspirational.
