Actress Lily Tomlin and author Armistead Maupin are among the special guests who will take part in Sydney's Mardi Gras Festival in 2011.

There will be over 80 events running over two weeks, leading up to the Parade and Party on Saturday March 5.

The New Mardi Gras crew have told Samesame.com.au they're thrilled to welcome much-loved actress and comedienne Lily Tomlin for a special show at the Enmore Theatre on Friday 4 March.

"Lily Tomlin is one of the world's finest actresses and talented comediennes, and we couldn't be happier to have her join us in Sydney for Mardi Gras 2011," said Michel Rolik, NMG's CEO. "Her charm, humour and open sexuality [she's an out lesbian] make her the perfect addition to our upcoming season."

Tales of the City author Armistead Maupin will discuss his life and work and read from his newest novel, while activist Peter Tatchell will share his views on same-sex marriage in Australia.

There will be endless parties in Sydney, from pool parties to beach parties, while Toybox returns to Luna Park as the official Mardi Gras recovery party.

The special guest at the Mardi Gras parade remains a closely-guarded secret.
