A message from our Chief Physician

According to Ayurvedic theory, everything in the universe -- living or not -- is connected. Good health is achieved when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe. A disruption of this harmony can lead to poor health and sickness.

Translated as the "knowledge of life" or the "science of life," Ayurveda can help improve both physical, measurable health and the overall quality of life.

Ayurveda is a healing science that advocates about attaining holistic health with the help of different modes of treatment. The principal of Ayurveda is based on “tridoshas” which mean vata (space and air), pitta (fire and water) and kapha (water and earth). The imbalance of any of these elements results in diseases and physical discomforts.

Eye diseases are very common today due to long hours of work on computers, poor eating habits, long and frequent journeys, insufficient sleep and other reasons.

When I began my career as an ayurvedic physician in Kerala in the year 1977, eye treatment based on Ayurveda was not so popular. However, with the concept that “Sarvendreeyanam Nayanam Pradhanam” (Of all, eye is the most vital), I started exploring all possibilities for effectively utilizing the vast traditional knowledge in Ayurveda that our family “Nelliakkattu Mana” handed down through centuries, especially in Shalakya Thantra – one of the eight branches of Ayurveda that deals with diagnosis and treatment of disease affecting those organs of human body located above the neck, especially Netra Chikitsa (Ayurveda Ophthalmology).

To begin with, we have started an informal clinic and with the success we achieved treating various eye diseases coupled with the growing demand for an alternative approach to eye care led to the launch of Sreedhareeyam in 1999.

Over the years, Sreedhareeyam has metamorphosed into the country's largest super specialty centre in eye care and today, our hospital has brought new respect to the science of Ayurvedic Ophthalmology.

Many patients who came to the centre for treatment were ones who had tried out other systems of treatment. Ayurvedic ophthalmology was their last hope. Patients who benefited were the best ambassadors of our system of medicine. But to make it more acceptable to people, several changes were introduced in the medicine manufacturing division. A modern laboratory and a medicine-manufacturing unit were set up at the centre. We have also developed ayurvedic eye drops and capsules that retain all values of traditional medicinal formulas.

In Sreedhareeyam, we practice medicine in a unique place where highly skilled professionals and leaders in their respective fields create an environment of calm competence under the most stressful and demanding of situations and provide medical care that works, that is safe, and that leaves no one behind.
