NVIDIA Technology Powers New Home Gaming System, Nintendo Switch

The first thing to know about the new Nintendo Switch home gaming system: it’s really fun to play. With great graphics, loads of game titles and incredible performance, the Nintendo Switch will provide people with many hours of engaging and interactive gaming entertainment.

But creating a device so fun required some serious engineering. The development encompassed 500 man-years of effort across every facet of creating a new gaming platform: algorithms, computer architecture, system design, system software, APIs, game engines and peripherals. They all had to be rethought and redesigned for Nintendo to deliver the best experience for gamers, whether they’re in the living room or on the move.

A Console Architecture for the Living Room and Beyond

Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.

Nintendo SwitchThe Nintendo Switch’s gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools and libraries. NVIDIA additionally created new gaming APIs to fully harness this performance. The newest API, NVN, was built specifically to bring lightweight, fast gaming to the masses.

Gameplay is further enhanced by hardware-accelerated video playback and custom software for audio effects and rendering.

We’ve optimized the full suite of hardware and software for gaming and mobile use cases. This includes custom operating system integration with the GPU to increase both performance and efficiency.

NVIDIA gaming technology is integrated into all aspects of the new Nintendo Switch home gaming system, which promises to deliver a great experience to gamers.

The Nintendo Switch will be available in March 2017. More information is available at https://www.nintendo.com/switch.

Nintendo Switch is a trademark of Nintendo.

Yes. Tegra X1 is 2 years old.

The old Tegra X1 supports 1080p/60 in games.
X1 also supports 4K/60 on video.

Switch is using “X2” which is alot better.

  • Darrell Markie

that’s because they are using a mobile chipset ..so this would be considered more of a mobile device.

  • Gilbertify

Wow, all the rumors about this thing were true! Glad they were. So excited.

  • Shimaran

Ok, so there is a GPU into the console itself, but is there something more in the dock ? Does the dock offer more power ?

  • komrath

Nice 🙂 It’s all about the games after all, but knowing NVidia is inside makes me less worried about graphical fidelity 🙂

  • Jonas Lavarini

ok, but how many teraflops? How is it going to compare with the basic ps4 and the ps4 pro?

  • Gilbertify

Definitely more powerful than a PS3 and Xbox 360 combined if it’s able to run Skyrim remastered on it. I’d say the screen is 720p and the games will be native 720p, some 1080p of course. 720p will allow for better performance over 1080p.

  • komrath

I wouldn’t held hopes for PS4 Pro, but maybe it will be around PS4

  • Dave_c

    and RIP 3ds

  • Gilbertify

lol, this is probably a 940 or 950m.

  • komrath

3DS is pretty safe as long as the screen is so big

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

Are the tegra chips powerful? Making a comparison with Ps4 and Xone, how far behind will be the Switch?

  • Hank Hill

That doesnt look like Skyrim Remastered it looks like Vanilla and with terrible frame-rate

  • Bluegrass Ky

extremely powerful. The Shield ANDROID tv can do ps3/xbox360 easily and that’s april 2015 tech. If Nvidia used an updated version in a sli type configuration they could do ps4…guaranteed. PS4 is midrange graphics anyway.
Shield tv does 4k output with android games. A updated version could do 4k Nintendo games.

    Does it say that?

    How can you tell?

Nice Nintendo caught up to ps3 graphical power finally.

  • Fierce_Deity_link

  • Cap87

It’s a portable, forget about any sort of sli integration. Until more details are announced you’re probably looking at a tegra x1 with some custom updates.

  • http://metaunicorn.com jota

I think it’s based on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 series. It says: ” same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce”

  • kontis

    Awesome.

Some people may feel offended but… Ouya was ahead of its time with the concept of microconsole (and using a mobile GPU for home gaming) and clearly inspired Nintendo. I was a big fan of its concept, but it failed for other reasons. People wre mocking it for lack of power but they should have been mocking it for content and the ecosystem, not the chip.

Smart marketing and good form factor ideas can make a giant difference and Nintendo just proved it. If you had told people a few years ago that the next nintendo console will be a microconsole with newer Ouya’s chip they would have called you crazy or trolling.

  • Sonicx9

    Tegra X1 or Tegra X2?

  • Rogerio de Andrade

I don´t care about specs, really. If it´s similar to the PS4 (probably is) then it´s more than enough.
What really matter are the game library. If it gets lots of Jrpgs and action games, then count me in at the line on the launch day

  • 59fps

That’s the key. I think they’ll have missed a trick, especially with PS4 and XBO doing scalable modes for games, if they don’t include additional power in the base station

  • Aron Lee

Perfect console for the casuals again.

  • riccy

For some reason I can’t comment the link without “waiting to be approved” so just look up nintendo nx 720p on google

New tech is always exciting, even when it doesn’t involve MIND MELTING VISUALS! at least for me, so im quite interested; Always mindblowing to notice how much actual time and effort goes into these things :O
    cheers!

  • Rafael Mendoza

the footage is almost certainly simulated, so any framrate issues are a result of the video’s framerate/rendering

  • nav1

You can tell all that from a short trailer, which probably doesn’t even show the real video on the screen?

  • Justin Farley

that moment when you don’t realize that screens are simulated for maximum ability to see, if they were playing the game on that console we’d still see glare/other visual defects from lighting. They did not show the console running a single game yet just simulated imagery.

  • pat

From what i heard its in par with the pro, the guys from gameblog were saying that. Its 900p on the portable screen an 1080 60 frames on the console. thats why they went with Nvidia chipset. they believe it out puts at 4k with playback but not games thats locked at 1080 60 frames.

  • TheGrandadParadox

That’s old rumours confirmed by devs I suppose. But not official. Thanks tho.

  • Gilbert Nicks

I don’t care if it does 4k but it has to do 1080p… but that is still video… I’m more concerned with CPU power and RAM… if its lacking in either let alone GPU… its going to hinder any real game development to be done with it… If the Base was a bit bigger that would tell me it has a 2ndary APU that is more powerful and can be air cooled… that would have been awesome… think of it like having a Laptop with a low/mid range APU… and you can plug a HIGH end APU via USB C… I was hoping that was the direction they were going to go… but I guess now 🙁

  • njevans

if they are showing of Skyrim Remaster HD then does it really matter? Obviously it’s powerful enough to run that game.

  • Henry518

They’re selling it as a home console

  • Deplorable Matt_C

I would still like to see Nintendo come out with a standard console and go head to head with Sony and MS as far as hardware specs. With their exclusives combined with western and Japanese 3rd party support they’d be THE console to buy IMO. Since the Wii, Nintendo has been too clever by half.

  • Aron Lee

    It’s 720p. Upscaled 1080p when docked probably.

  • zidanelucis

So it’s weaker than X1. Not surprised. So it won’t get any games like FFXV or Witcher. But as a handheld with Wii U level specs? That’s great.

  • Daniel Gump

It will probably run in a low-power mode for 720P portable gaming and a high-power mode for 1080P console gaming. There’s no need to go beyond the NS screen’s probable resolution when on-the-go.

  • Aron Lee

You will get super scaled down witcher in 720p 25 to 30fps on average.
The video showed some kind of watered down Witcher game with terrible fps.

  • Henry518

Someone else said it was the X2

  • riccy

learn the difference between primarily and secondarily

  • zidanelucis

That wasn’t Witcher. It was Skyrim. A last gen game. Of course it can run on it. Just based on the trailer I could tell this thing wouldn’t be powerful considering Zelda looked exactly the same and all the games they showed, including 3D Mario didn’t wow me in anyway.

Buit again, Wii U level specs on a handheld? That’s great.

  • riccy

    I seriously doubt that

  • Max Leo

It’s not primarily anything, that’s the selling point. You can play it however you want.

  • DroidFreud

Not more powerful respect PS4 or One (that have already problems on framerate and graphics details). Then for me it’s a big NO!

  • flyguy860

Seriously… Framerate on a video that was revealed on youtube… sit down somewhere man hahahaha

  • Aron Lee

If its running downscaled skyrim in 720p and getting what it looks like 20ish fps just standing around… this is not a console for core gamers.

  • Alex Landy

And still we have car company that use Ios system as entertainment device.
We have computer company that mod apple computer with apple approve, do not confuse with hackintosh.
I think there was a reason Nintendo was on Apple presentation last month.
One of advantage for using swift and apple Ios is security and the ease of programming in swift.

  • Ajsan Aje

Misinformation. It’s weaker than the Xbox One.

  • riccy

not really, TLOU is beyond what Wii U can do

  • Daniel Masterson

well considering skyrim remastered releases in a week its a very safe bet that its that version. plus other sites have been saying it is the remastered version.

  • Daniel Gump

It will probably switch between low-power and high-power modes.

  • Gabe Hoffman

    source?

  • Max Leo

The official website literally says “The new home gaming system”
Still the whole point is, it can be whatever you want.

  • riccy

you’re seriously trying to judge framerate from a video taken with a camera…

  • riccy

PS4 has no framerate issues when the games are coded properly

  • Noremacam

It doesn’t have to be as powerful as the xbone or the PS4. It just has to be close. If it’s close, the extra features should make it better overall.

  • Aron Lee

yep, the video was recorded in 60 fps.
It’s not hard to see a game running in 20 fps.

  • riccy

doubt that it’s close for the handheld

  • AnonFlow

    Nvidia + Nintendo? Wow Awsome!

Killing Floor 2 Online on the go and I will sell you my kidney.

  • Gabe Hoffman

Kinda surreal seeing companies like Epic Games and Take Two up there

  • http://www.kemat1an.it Kemat1an

Let me save some money prior March! Very impressive Nintendo!

  • riccy

    i’m 99% sure it wasn’t 20fps

  • Aron Lee

It’s a new gameboy designed to play Super Mario and Pokemons it’s fine.

  • Henry518

If it was primarily a handheld device they wouldn’t be selling home-console games on it and, I repeat, they wouldn’t be saying it was a home console. Maybe try thinking a little before labeling things on your own?

  • DroidFreud

This console not reach anyway the same power, and with 840gflops in less you will see surely the difference.

  • Mark Burley

I already have it shield tv and k1

  • riccy

Uh yes they would, as mobile technology has advanced quite far

  • Adam Wells

I don’t think CarPlay counts. Apple is infamous for keeping things in house. They even develop their own SOCs. I do agree with the use of swift/metal and the security as an advantage.

  • TheGrandadParadox

Custom tegra would mean better than x1. Which would put it around xbox 1probably. Although maybe not quite as powerful. If there is additional processing in the dock then we’re absolutely laughing all the way to 3rd party support across the board. Remember the portable will need to render only at 720p possibly so less work. Nice work team!!

  • Adri

The say that because Pascal, but even the poor GTX1050 is Pascal.

  • TheGambleGamers

3rd party games won’t be anymore on the game after 1 year or so. Probably a weak system. Just like the Wii U.

  • Aender

come on, NX wasn’t a thing when microsoft/sony were prototyping for ps4/xb1

  • Sebastian Cuenca

If controls of my wii U are compatible with this console, nintendo will have my soul! 😀

  • xboxmaster

yeah but same is with ps4/xb1, they use a notebook cpu so it’s still in the mobile area, i mean the weakest current gen pc gpu destroys ps4/xb1’s gpus

  • maroon1

As if teraflops is somehow a good comparison between different GPU

If you go by Tflops. fury X should be almost on par with GTX 1080 and much faster than 980 Ti

  • riccy

“weakest current gen PC GPU destroys PS4 GPU” BS

  • Joseph Oliveira

If the GPU is fast, than the CPU has to always be fast too. Or it will bottle neck. Look it up.

  • Sbobon

The screen looks like in 900p, and 1080p on tv

  • Joseph Oliveira

No RIP to 3DS. Nintendo said multiple times that this will NOT replace the Handheld market.

  • Si2k78

This says it all: “The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards”

It’ll run in lower power mode for mobile gaming at 720p, and scaled up for home use on a 1080p screen. The base may act as a active cooling station as well to allow for higher clocks speeds.

  • Eric Lavallee

SOURCE and most likely extremely wrong I’ve heard it’s a custom Tegra New chip

  • Antipika

The website says what will enable them to set the price point they want. They’re not going to market it as a portable system if they expect to sell it $300+…

  • Joseph Oliveira

Don’t worry about 1080p Resolution. Most Wii U games did 1080px60.

  • Silex

Shut up and take my money.

  • riccy

The PS3’s processor (CELL) was INSANELY fast, technically faster than PS4 CPU. It was both a CPU and GPU — practically a CPCPU. I know very well about what CPUs and GPUs must be. You are comparing it to PS3. PS3’s CELL far outstripped the RSX component

  • Joseph Oliveira

Dislike your comment cause you said, ” It was Skyrim. A last gen game.”

HAVEN’T YOU HEARD!?!?! SKYRIM IS GETTING A REMAKE. Which means, it’s THIS Gen.

  • garbagedick

    Happy Birthday Nick!

  • Joseph Oliveira

You’re an idiot if you think that. Most of the Wii U games was 1080×30. A lot of there games was 1080×60. If it gets downscaled, it be 1080×30.

When was there a console running 20fps?

Do you even know what you’re talking about?

  • DroidFreud

    PS4 = 1.84tflops

    One = 1.31tflops

Switch = At least 2tflops if not want to fall behind.

  • Fabrizio Silveri

I want to know how powerful it is.

Sure it can. Doesn’t mean it would run well.

  • chibiwings

Nailed the Vita Coffin. just kidding. Oh wait! Sony Nailed it

  • Gilbert Nicks

im less worried about RES and more worried about if it can RUN advanced games that have Multiple objects and effects rendering on screen… and will it supports MODs… IMO that isn’t Skyrim remastered unless it supports MODS

  • riccy

Remaster, not remake. The Last of Us: Remastered is on PS4 and Pro. Doesn’t stop it being a PS3 game. Uncharted Collection is on PS4. Doesn’t stop it being a PS3 game. etc.

  • Joseph Oliveira

You sure about that? XOne and PS4 had 5,400rpm drives when the Wii U had Flash Storage.

If they’re saving battery consumption, this would be Flash Storage as well.

  • paraagent

why does nvagina have to always steal the show….

  • riccy

it won’t be 2 teraflops lol

  • Si2k78

It’s going to be powering a 720p screen, -‘d overclocked for home use. A PS4 equivalent processor and gpu would be more than adequate.

  • riccy

i’m talking about doing it and running well. Android TV’s processor is far inferior to the PS3’s CELL

  • http://vg247.com/ Mike W

Is it the same specs as the shield?

  • DroidFreud

And so it will be a fail!

  • Joseph Oliveira

    Like your grammar?

  • riccy

Storage has nothing to do with GPU/CPU power

  • riccy

    No. No it won’t.

  • jerome

Bravo Nvidia :). This is by far the most ambitious console I’ve never seen and seeing Nvidia working on it is GOOD NEWS.

  • http://vg247.com/ Mike W

    lol

  • Joseph Oliveira

uh, what? NX been in prototype since Wii U came out. Nintendo says, every time they release a new console.. they’re already on the drawing board for a new one.

  • YoshiAngemon

So will the Wii U Edition of Breath of the Wild.

  • riccy

technically PS3 was their most ambitious

  • DroidFreud

It would be good anyway, but you don’t believe that will be like this.

  • Joseph Oliveira

I suspect 720p as well. 480p is the Wii U GamePad Resolution. If it’s anymore than 720p.. battery consumption be an issue.

  • DroidFreud

I have heard the same things before the release of WiiU.

  • TheGambleGamers

Yes it wil. Take the failed Wii U as an example, third party game devs didn’t care about it anymore after 1 year or so. Weak system. So will be the this system. Weak asf console.

  • riccy

you don’t need insanely high res on handheld anyway. 1080p is near indistinguishable from 4K on a tablet/phone

  • Joseph Oliveira

I’m actually more interested to see the new Pro Controller. Not this Sega Saturn type.

  • Dank MAngoes

Holy crap this thing is beautiful!! GIVE IT TO ME NOW! TAKE MY CREDIT CARD <3

  • CogInTheWheel

    TASTY!

  • WES

    BUT HOW MANY CORES??

  • WES

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

Actually matter because Skyrim is an old game, and allowing a higher resolution in an old game doesn’t proves the device is powerful, even if a HD Skyrim will be a good game to have on the list. I’m really looking to compare the specs, I’m curious about that, not interested in discuss subjective idea of “beautiful graphics x art style” and personal vision about what is good or don’t, I’m interested in raw numbers and horsepower.

  • TheGambleGamers

    Time to buy glasses riccy!

  • Si2k78

Nah, Nintendo has never muddled into the hardware arms race. The nvidia chip will be more than adequate considering the needs of the system, 720p – 1080p. All this talk about 4K and HDR need not apply.

  • Dank MAngoes

Probably won’t be THAT powerful, but it might even hit 1080p60 if the GPU is truly polaris based

  • TheGambleGamers

    1/5

  • paraagent

ya’ll MotherF@#$%^& calling it weak are amd fan boys for real. yah think nvidia is WEAK? gtfoh !

  • Enverex

There’s no way of knowing (from this) if it’s a cut-down version of the game designed to run better on the hardware though, e.g. lower resolution textures, no AA or AF, etc.

  • paraagent

    a 3rd..

  • Cameron Standring

Well, it says ‘based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards’, aka the 10-series that uses Pascal. Them not just saying Pascal is a little odd though.

  • riccy

    No.

  • Américo Santos

Rumors from 3 moths ago said 2 hours, recent rumors say 4 hours.

  • lasttimelord12

That’s actually really cool! I’ve avoided Nintendo in the past due to lack of graphics performance even though the games are cool, but with the small form factor of this new console, plus the higher graphics options, I am looking forward to plugging it into my monitor.

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

Actually, 60frames is relative, because, if the developer overpopulate the game with complex geometry and a whole lot of effects, depending on how much they “stuff their turkey”, the console will not hold 60fps. 6ofps it’s not a pre-determined spec.

  • DroidFreud

For a console of 2017, at least a rock solid 1080p/60fps on TV.

  • Dank MAngoes

no need for a “cooling station” actually. The tablet portion itself has a fan (probably to prevent thermal throttling) which might be disabled when it’s not necessary for mobile 720p gaming, but could spin up when “overclocking” for 1080p in it’s dock. Just speculation.

  • Enverex

You think a hand-held, battery powered device is going to be more powerful than full-size, mains powered consoles? Really?

  • Américo Santos

The tablet does have venting holes.

  • DamZe

Yeah because Skyrim Remastered is such a technological wonder which Means its twice the power of last gen… Seriously?

  • Logan Hollis

“The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.”

Does this mean they have managed to create an X86 based mobile device?! If so, then that is huge.

  • Joseph Oliveira

It’s not “primarily” a handheld device, since they still have the 3DS still growing strong.

And they already said that they’re not killing it or replacing it.

  • thelanceleader

Skyrim Remastered has the same PC requirements as Fallout 4. We all know how Fallout 4 brings PS4 and Xbox to their knees, so if the Switch can run it, especially on the handheld, then it’s headed in a good direction.

  • Dank MAngoes

yeah no. It’s definitely not going to hit 2tflops. ALTHOUGH, if that polaris GPU is truly custom it’s possible that they may have made it very beefy. Still not going to be 2tflops though lol

  • Dank MAngoes

Not really. Tons of developers are already on board. GTFO hater

  • Joseph Oliveira

    Gameboy died. :

  • riccy

60fps is impossible on consumer hardware if you’re trying to render The Avengers. 60fps is possible on any hardware. Just depends what you’re trying to render

  • DroidFreud

I think that it’s possible with a well-made custom SoC.

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

I had both, for now I have an AMD, and man, how I want to switch back to Nvidia! AMD is terrible. From incompatibilities and unsolvable bugs, to every type of problem you can imagine. It cost less, at least, but for a reason.

  • DroidFreud

    Like WiiU LOL

  • Américo Santos

X2 will likely support similar resolutions with better performance and efficiency. Also this press release says that it uses the top nvidia technology, meaning Pascal so X2 semi-confirmed.

  • TheGambleGamers

    Waste of money.

  • Mariano Santos

Is this the real life or it’s just fantasy?

  • riccy

Uhm, Nintendo Switch uses Nvidia GPU

  • Dank MAngoes

that’s very easily doable with the Polaris architecture.

  • GeXXy

still need to see the specs before i’m sold. and also a good games launch lineup.

  • Raymond Sawyer

This troll is everywhere! You mad or Naww!

  • TheGambleGamers

It’s not even more powerfull then the Standard Xbone…

  • riccy

    Nintendo uses Nvidia!!

  • DroidFreud

    Good, so double fail.

  • GeXXy

    no 4k? 😛

  • averagesally

Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality.

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

That’s what I’m saying, If you try to render a very complex image, the hardware will probably stress and the speed of render it will be under the 60fps. To run at 60 and above, you have to balance what you will be rendering. There’s 60fps games in n64, for example, in games where the developer didn’t tried to push the hardware too much.

  • Jack Milton Russell

Not true, technically. The GCN was a powerhouse.

  • Rogerio de Andrade

Loved your screen name and avatar. Yep, Palmeiras first world champion ever

  • mobilegamerbr

Is this Tegra X1 tablet revamp?

  • riccy

    Nintendo. Uses. NVIDIA

  • riccy

    No, 720p

  • japananimenews

    “custom”

  • Dank MAngoes

YAH IT GOT DA POWAH!!! <3

  • riccy

    who are you talking to?

  • Paul Ponce

You’ve been on this comment section quite a lot. Commenting the same bs. We get it. You don’t like it. Move on.

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

That’s good to hear, but the Switch version will be exactly the same of PC? It can be HD (1080), but running on low specs of PC.

  • riccy

there’s tons of 60fps PS1/2/3/4/Pro, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Wii, whatever games. As we both said, just depends on what’s rendering.

  • AKDragonPC

Nintendo will aim for 4k when 8k has been out for 5 years or more. Nintendo is not about the graphics.

  • TheGambleGamers

Less powerfull then Xbone Triple fail!

  • Dank MAngoes

Yeah, it only needs to be able to handle 1080p60 which based on this article it will be able to. If that’s a native render, then it already beats the current (not “Pro”) consoles.

  • Emperor.Hadrian

IT’S THE GAMES BRUH. NINTENDO MAKES GREAT GAMES

  • DN

Give us game stream to Nintendo Switch please!

  • Daniel Gump

In portable mode, no. The question is console mode, when it’s not running on the battery.

  • Dank MAngoes

Based on this post, it seems there’s lots of low level optimization to help with rendering (something like Vulcan, etc.)

  • Fabrizio Silveri

1080p60 doesn’t mean anything. If you’re running an NES game even a smartwatch can play it 1080p60 -.-”
What’s important is GAMES, so what’s important is that Nintendo is not left alone again, but to do that the Tegra chip must be at least close in power to an XBO, so the porting is easy and any multiplatform game gets the Switch version we deserve.
Mind you, the dock could easily have a fan for heat dissipation, which could increase the top performances by a factor of 2 without any need for additional hardware, so getting the same games at 1080p60 when docked and 720p30 when playing mobile is likely, but the real question is will those games be the same a PS4 can play?

  • shikamaru86

    That’s actually pretty clever. I chuckled =)

  • DroidFreud

It’s also not necessary in portable mode with that low resolution, but how have you said, the most important thing it’s the console mode.

  • Dank MAngoes

yeah, true it is a little odd. However, Pascal would be necessary i think to truly unleash powerful 1080p performance worthy of TV play.

  • Gilbert Nicks

yet this feels more like its built around the Handheld market…

  • Dank MAngoes

An additional GPU in the dock not only increases prices exponentially, but is largely pointless when a well optimized and modern tablet CPU is more than powerful enough to drive modest 1080p games

  • DroidFreud

There may be all low-level optimizations you want, but the videogame market is going in wrong way because the developers do not care to do their job well (which I avoided writing before).

  • sunpower

Agreed. if it can’t keep up with even the current gen let alone they are both releasing the pro and scorpio versions, this one will be DOA and only be useful for 1st party games, which can only take you so far. They had to have learned from the WiiU.

  • SquadCraftFTW

    I NEED

  • Emmanuel Rocha

It’s not skyrim. It’s Zelda: Breath of the wild. A new Zelda game.

  • Dank MAngoes

Yeah my bad I got it mixed up with Pascal in several comments. I meant Pascal (that’s the latest right?). Both start with P and whatnot…

  • TheGambleGamers

No, the whole console and specs are weak. This Chip that is for the system. Don’t turn it into something else stupid cat

  • https://sites.google.com/site/nintendo1fanssite/ Nintendians

huh… i like that is power by nvidia tech. but i like way the wii u’s gamepad and pro controller joystick are on top, more comfortable, hopefully it’s backward compatible with wii u’s hardware and we could gamestream on it. i guess my wii u pro controller going to be used on wii u and pc and android (shield tablet k1) with a 3rd party adapter that supports xinput and dinput. nintendo switch, why codename sound better than the final name?

  • Fierce_Deity_link

wii u had more native 1080p 60fps than the competition could manage at one point. give it some time and ps3 graphics will not look as good anymore

  • Dank MAngoes

It better be at least 6. Shouldn’t be that hard really.

  • Quiubo

Impressive. I’m actually excited about this.

  • Joseph Oliveira

Actually they do. Load times of an Application, and go read so many Articles of how a game feels different between different Storage speeds.

  • Gilbert Nicks

well with the size of the dock… my pipe dream is dead… was hoping for Dual APU support. 1060 equivalent in the DOCK and a 1050 equivalent in the tablet… but looks like that is not the case 🙁

  • Danny

    So many questions…

Docking station is just to connect to TV and Charge or does it actually improve performance with external gfx?

  • Warren Stevens

Based on Tegra X2 or X1? If it is Tegra X2 customized for Switch I will be happy. X1 seems a bit too old IMO.

  • Kyle

judging by the graphics we saw as well as some of the ports that have been confirmed, I’d assume it’s an X2.

  • Si2k78

True, but it turned out to be one of nintendo’s worst selling consoles.

  • Dan0709

ugh so many questions…1080? 720?… when can i pre-order the console? when do they reveal the launch games? i hope the rumor of having news BOTH this week and the next week are true… SO MANY QUESTIONS LOL

  • Ragenalien

It was definitely not both a CPU and GPU. The CELL processor developed by IBM was pretty complex, but included none of the hardware found on modern GPUs.

  • Kody B.

Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see. I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy.

  • LOLWUTM8

    sweet, Tegra is a beast

  • chibiwings

Hopefully 3DS’ soul will be transferred via EYWA to Nintendo Switch lolz.

  • AlexFirth91

Looks like there may be another GPU in the dock kinda like the new 1050s. Anyways, this is super badass and I am buying day one.

  • Matías Liz

I wonder how Nintendo will make the transition over Wii U with AMD GPU to Switch with an Nvidia GPU. Maybe it won’t be a retrocompatible console. You will have to acquire games by virtual store or SD cards which is very different from the DVD used by Wii U.

  • Muzufuzo

It has to be close enough. Nvidia’s architecture is different than AMD’s, so ~750 Nvidia gflops (when docked) would probably suffice if it’s on par with Pascal efficiency of using these flops. If it’s something with 400 gflops and only 4GB RAM then forget it, it will fail as not enough developers will make games for it. Customers want to play some of the same games that are available on the Xbox One and PS4. By failing I mean they will sell less than 30 million in the first 2 years. It being practically a successor to both Wii U and 3DS means it has to sell in more than 100 millions after a few years.

  • Gilbert Nicks

I don’t want modest… I want MAXED SETTINGS 1080p and Modest 4k…. and IDK where you have been… but even the shield with TX1 had to water down HL2 and DoomBFG to run at 1080p I don’t want a water down version. and I’m not just talking about graphics… I’m talking about the amount of simulations and effects that can be ran at any given moment… Stuff that we take for granted on PC and XB1 and PS4 that Mobile gamers know really nothing about… Now when I look at this… I see this as a Vita Killer… I see this as a Awesome handheld device that lets me dock at home… but this doesn’t come off as a console. now if the rumors are true for that PAID extra expansion unit… then Sure that will do… but being a step behind X1 and PS4 is costing them too much…

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

It’s exactly my thoughts. It HAS to be at least not that far from standard Xbox, so the port would not be that dificult to achieve acceptable performance. And it’s incredible the confusion people do about 1080 and 60fps, they seem to think it’s a pre-determined, locked spec.

  • Muzufuzo

Nvidia GTX 1050 which is the weakest of current gen Nvidia GPUs family, totally destroys both PS4 and Xbox One GPUs.

  • Apex Gaming

I’m hoping it replaces the handheld market, because I want those all those RPGs on a console (which has the option to go handheld).

  • primeiro_campeão_mundial_51

Because I’m easy come, easy go. A little high, little low.

  • jdb1984

They said the same thing about the Game Boy line when the DS came out

  • Gilbert Nicks

and I’m fine with that… but still feels like its missing something to be a HOME CONSOLE… a dock doesn’t make it a home console.. if that was the case then my PSP was a home console… we all know how much that handheld was not… I am hoping the Expansion rumor is true… then maybe it will fill in what ever blank I can figure out is missing…

  • cyberprologue

Anywhere the wind goes, doesn’t really matter to me.

  • Gilbert Nicks

I’m hoping its a 1060 in disguise lol because that would put it at High 1080p and mid/low end 4k capable

  • JuneMas

The PS4 & X1 are Birkenhead m bottle necked by their weak Cpu’s so there doesn’t need to be a parity between the speeds. You simply create the game based on the systems limitations.

  • Fooni

    <3

  • evolucion8

    No it is not.

  • evolucion8

No, it is not, the Wii U was faster than both and this console should be slightly faster than it, but well below the Xbone and PS4.

  • Jeff Goldblum

dont be silly its Tegra based, so while it might use Pascal GPU cores its far away from the desktop variants. Nvidia dont have any CPU tech either so will be using ARM cpu cores

  • Chaltab

Well it certainly won’t be in handheld mode. I’m guessing it will be around 1 TFLOP in console mode.

  • https://blogofsigmar.wordpress.com/ Stone Edwards

Just like the DS didn’t replace the Gameboy line :p

  • evolucion8

The issue is that it was nearly impossible to reach that power as it was inefficient and to complex to develop for.

  • Ventilator

Yes. I don’t expect any 4K on gaming at all on Switch.
As you kinda say..Like X1, but can handle far more.

  • ShinjiOda

Without any Nintendo 1st party titles. I’d rather have my PC for PC games and a console or two for console games then tool around with a Shield

  • Warren Stevens

I agree. I want more specific specs. For the dock and portable portions

  • ShinjiOda

    Technical stats or GTFO

  • Deivid William Sousa

Muito bom! qual é a espessificaçao do chip tegra que ele usa?

  • ShinjiOda

    Don’t do drugs kids.

  • nvikelo nyathi (gamertech)

    How much does it cost

  • fancyslimshady

If you’re looking for Graphics ..why do you look for consoles in general? This is Nintendo. And when it comes to gaming (not graphics) they have never disappointed me.

  • Rogerio de Andrade

For sure! It´s so hard to find a copy of the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess today, BofW will be in a similar situation.

  • Eder García

you gave me a no HDMI on the Wii deja vu

  • namelessuser

Dude, you seriously need glasses. The video was recorded at 30fps, not 60, and the game was AT LEAST running at that speed. It wasn’t dropping frames at all during the video. The only game that seemed to be doing that was Zelda, and even then I’d blame that either on poor capture or an early build (they state as much at the end of the trailer); considering the game’s launching on the Wii U as well, they’re definitely not going to gimp the version that’s coming out on their newer, fancier system.

  • Alastor Lakiska Lines

I rather wonder if it will be stable on the Switch. Bethsdas Open World games have a tendency to crash on consoles as soon as a certain save size is reached (keeping up with all world objects). Making this possible on a portable console is a great feat in my eyes.

  • bangxWar

    1$ in app store

  • Prozium

No, the specs are not similar to the PS4. It could be slightly more powerful than the Wii U or on par with it. The PS4 and Xbox One are on a totally different level of hardware specs compared to the Switch.

  • Alastor Lakiska Lines

I am kinda concerned about the battery power of the mobile mode. But local multiplayer on a handheld (with only 1 device. At least this is a stroke of genius.

  • bangxWar

    to me……

  • Alastor Lakiska Lines

Graphics are in general of little importance. Aesthetics is the important visual part of any game. A game with good aesthetics will look greeat even in 20 years.

  • ballsofsteelbr

Obviously not made to be the most powerful desktop console out there, but for a handheld this looks amazing if the leaked specs are correct. I think people are expecting the wrong things for this, imagine what the next Monster Hunter could look like :O

  • Papacheeks

    Android games=/Console games

Not the same type of games man. Especially when you add in heavy mo-cap, high res textures and fully big explorable worlds. SHow me an open world game that looks like horizon running on a android device?

  • Prozium

That controller looks hideous and uncomfortable to use. I hope the pro controller comes with it.

  • Han Solo

after seeing your picture, I don’t wonder

  • companyoflosers

the wii u was already more powerful than both of those by at least a factor of 2.

  • sfried

And everytime we boot up the device there will be the traditional Nvidia (“NVIDIA~!” speech) splash screen followed by Mario jumping (“Woo hoo!”) and knocking the logo from underneath, switching it to the Nintendo logo (Mario coin noise).

  • Han Solo

    it’s gotta be more powerful

  • Si2k78

The cooling solution will be interesting to see once it’s revealed. I think it may even resemble how high end gaming laptops use active cooling when attached to their docking station, with all the power hungry components attached to the docking station, and a cooling is achieved by way of a copper connection between the device and the dock.

  • leonffs

Good now you just need some games.

  • Sali Vader

So this means it doesn’t stream the game through wifi or something when it isn’t docked to the base? So the dock is just the TV adapter?

  • Timothy Lim

The Tegra X1 is already at 1 teraflop of performance.
This being Pascal and a custom SoC, 1-1.5 Tflops is a more reasonable estimate.

The Wii u is around 0.4 Tflops while the original XBone is 1.1 Tflops and the Og Ps4 is at 1.8 Tflops.

So it’ll be perfectly capable of matching the PS4 and Xbox One in terms of power.

  • companyoflosers

custom tegra processor when they are about to release the tegra x2 which is stronger than the xbone and ps4’s processors AND the newest gpu architecture (pascal), no way this thing isnt slightly better than ps4.

  • Rogerio de Andrade

I´m ok with that. Since the Wii Nintendo didn´t mean to compete for power and that doesn´t seem the case again. It´s all about different gaming experiences and this time it seems they nailed it.

  • Timothy Lim

Nvidia actually has their own CPUs called the Denver core but their ARM based unlike the APUs in the other consoles which are x86 based.

  • Guilherme Mello

the screen is probably 900p by the rumors

  • doug

    Yes!!! OMG!

  • companyoflosers

normally simulated presents as better than real life performance, not worse. plus the frame rates looks fine when docked so the dock probably has some extra hardware for better performance. undocked probably isnt intended to play home console titles and is really intended for lighter gaming like pokemon games for example. thats not to say it CANT play those bigger games on the go, just not as well.

  • companyoflosers

they are releasing skyrim as well on it.

  • Allen – PSN iPITYtheFOOL_T

It doesn’t specifically say “Skyrim Remastered”. I would like to see it confirmed.

  • Ithrix

I doubt they’re going to off-load compute to the stand for 1080p. Running the newest nvidia chipsets I would expect 1080 at 30fps is very doable for a portable system.

  • Allen – PSN iPITYtheFOOL_T

    Where is that confirmed?

  • Papacheeks

What card do you have? Because my Sapphire nitro oc+ rx 480 rules and i paid 279.99 for it. Gears of war 4 maxed at ultra settings locked 60fps. Digital Foundry just showed off how dx 12 with RX 480 destroyed a nvidia gtx 1060 which is way more.

They had to turn the game back to dx11 for the 1060 to have consistant frame rate. I had a gtx 770 before the rx 480. And the new driver suit with wattman is fantastic. Team red isn’t the one not making cards for future tech like dx 12, it’s nvidia.

  • Allen – PSN iPITYtheFOOL_T

You are ASSuming. I want it to be true too but that is after all a small tablet that this is played on and nothing has given any official specs.

  • Allen – PSN iPITYtheFOOL_T

Not even close…and very very little 3rd party support to even bother comparing.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMacco26 Macco26

I wonder what about retrocompatibility; Wii U has DVD media, 3DXL had cartridges. This has carts only. I guess if there will be a form of downloadable content for whom purchased Wii U games until now. Of course I mean: IF this console is going to offer any retrocompatibility, at all.

  • Daniel Masterson

yup im assuming and i bet i am right.

  • brandon9271

you guys realize Nintendo filed a patented for some sort of suplimental computing thingamabob.. It’s very possible that the dock has additional CPU,GPU or APU that runs the games in higher res when in “home” mode. Skyrim remastered at 1080p 60FPS at home.. 720p on the go. I’m ok with that 🙂

  • companyoflosers

considering the tegra X2 nvidia is about to release is stronger than xbone and ps4 cpu’s and is what the Switch’s cpu is based on, not to mention it uses nvidia’s latest in gpu architecture (probably pascal), id be surprised if this wasnt just as good if not slightly better than ps4. nntendo is probably tired of being considered the underpowered console by now.

  • Allen – PSN iPITYtheFOOL_T

I think you are right. Look at how small the switch is as a tablet. This is the exact same power at home as mobile and I’m not seeing it being as powerful as the PS4. I’d say just slightly more powerful than WiiU but at least it will have some 3rd party support this time.

  • companyoflosers

go find a pc capable of 4k under 500 bucks. you cant, so why expect native 4k from any consoles withing the next 10 or so years.

  • XBASS KINGTING

I WANT TOO PRE ODER NOW

  • fancyslimshady

Graphics is the icing on the cake.. But you dont get the point of my comment.

  • companyoflosers

the dock probably holds a full console quality install version of most of the home console quality games while the sd card looking cartridge probably holds the mobile version. that being said, the frame rates when its not docked while running zelda seem kinda choppy.

  • Papacheeks

The max output is 1 teraflop, but there are so many other factors that real-time compute and actually running a game engine are 2 different things.

  • Lukehalpin

You seem to be assuming that all Devs are going to be jumping over to focus on PS4 Pro and Scorpio. That definitely isn’t the case. I’m a fan of hardware upgrades, but you can see from the small list of supported games on the PS4 Pro that Devs aren’t flocking to it. The majority of consumers own the original PS4 and Xbox One consoles, so if its on par with those, things should go well.

  • xboxmaster

and the ps4 was in prototype since the ps3 came out, your point? move along dumbass

  • xboxmaster

a 1070 rapes the ps4 gpu several laps around it dumbass

  • companyoflosers

not necessarily. it would take something the equivalent of an i3 to bottleneck something like a gtx titan (non pascal version). bottlenecking a gpu is harder than you think.

  • sami sipilä

But if Switch is using a ARM processor it can only stream skyrim from your computer

  • DeRosset

I hope it’s powerful enough to attract third parties with their AAA multiplatform games. There hasn’t been a good Tomb Raider game on a Nintendo console since Legend.

  • Papacheeks

Looking at that list yea your right tons….Rolls eyes. sounds like the Wii U all over again. Thats how it started at launch there were a bunch of third party ported games. Then after 2013….dead.

We’ll wait and see. The things im interested in are the exclusives Nintendo will have that are not mario. They are funding beyond good and evil 2 i believe. Which will make me unfortunately buy the console.

  • Jose Diaz

    Tegra is ARM

  • http://youtube.com/adesyndicate Alexander Emenheiser

What an unusual resolution to use. I’ve heard of the standards 720p and 1080p, but never 900p.

  • Dllemm

More powerful than a shield tablet and on par or slightly more powerful than a shield tv. The nintendo switch tablet has vents. The Tegra K1 in the shield tv is very fast but runs much hotter than the shield tablet.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Switch is probably rocking a souped-up version of Tegra X1, not K1. If it’s running Skyrim Remastered, there’s no way it’s running on a K1.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

    “then” or “than?”

  • Johan Johansson

Seriously I think the Wii U had good graphics on it’s Mario games like Mario 3D world and MK8. Bump up the res to at least 1080p on TV and a sub 1080P on the go. I Love the Idea of not be thederd to the TV, my gaming pc stream PC games to my phone over internet, the Ps4 does the same, however this solution does Not requier a high LTE connection to work and my phones Data plan won’t run out. I belive in this system.

  • davedsone

Stop being obtuse. The heart of the system is a tablet-like device, so that’s good performance. Which was the whole point of what was being said. No matter what the stand does, the processing is being done in the tablet.

  • Dllemm

Since the K1 CPU is ARM based (same as Android), they’ll release a smaller version of it later to replace the 3DS. If they continue to release hardware that is.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

It’s running Skyrim Remastered, so probably better specs. Shield has K1, Switch probably has a souped-up X1.

  • Jose Diaz

That’s the exact same scenario with the Wii U. Then, right before release, 3rd parties wont make future games for Switch because it’s “weak”, “gimmicky” and “has no games”…

  • VG Collector

Watch the whole video, Skyrim is shown too.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Closer to 2 TFLOP, more likely, but not more.

  • http://youtube.com/adesyndicate Alexander Emenheiser

Looks like I may be retiring the Wii U shortly.

  • Estebagel García

At the end of the video they show Betheseda copyright. Betheseda own the elder scrolls ip, the latest being skyrim remastered.

  • davedsone

    “new gameboy” he said. RIF.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Kinda depends. Wii U will run Breath of the Wild at 720p/30fps, and it probably only hits around 700 GFLOPs. All the Switch has to do is hit 1080p on Breath of the Wild and that’ll be it, and probably doesn’t need to hit XB1/PS4 spec to hit.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The dock may not need extra hardware to boost performance, just active cooling so the system can jack up the clock rate and/or turn on all the shaders on the SoC.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The first section featured BoTW, but another section featured Skyrim.

  • Jonathan Twyman

The question that I am wondering, does it work with nvidia game stream? I want to stream my computer to this device. NVIDIA, YOU CANCELLED SHIELD 2. PLEASE ADD THIS ABILITY.

  • companyoflosers

if they want to see proper 3rd party support, they need to show the console has extra headroom past what its launch titles need to run smoothly. just giving it enough to run BOTW at 1080p is a bit short sighted. not to mention with the ps4 pro coming out and this being rumored to be around $399, it need comparable to ps4 level specs to make it.

  • Jonathan Twyman

    Tegra X2 bud. 😀

  • Skaters94

its not even a handheld console its a home console that can become a handheld so its the secondary part home console is the primary part

  • Dllemm

Wikipedia says the X2 GPU is capable of 0.75-1.5 Teraflops, the Xbox One has 1.3 and the PS4 has 1.8. Bear in mind that the K1 runs much hotter in Android TV applications.

  • companyoflosers

true, but it wouldnt be the first time nintendo put additional hardware to run games in peripherals separate from the console itself. i would not complain if they added some additional hardware to the dock. id actually welcome it for future proofing. or at least plans to release a dock that DID have extra power in the dock as an addon.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Nope, not even close. One of the reasons many developers skipped the Wii U is because it was underpowered. Wii U didn’t even hit PS3’s spec. The Wii U’s GPU is probably a whole class down (that is, half the execution units) from PS4/XB1 GPUs.

That the games available for the Wii U are so gorgeous is a huge credit to the software developers at Nintendo and its 2nd-party partners, as great art direction makes for a much prettier game than simply having more stuff for the GPU to render. Zelda BoTW on Wii U will only play at 720p with no anti-aliasing, and it’s probably the most beautiful looking game I’ve ever seen.

  • sunpower

The point is those systems all play the same games. If the Switch can’t keep up with the rest then the devs won’t bother porting the games over and people won’t by a weaker version of the game. It’s the same thing that happened to the WiiU and I owed that system first. It just became a 1st party system after a couple years and the releases were so spread apart it wasn’t worth holding on to.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The Switch will have somewhere in the ballpark of 2x-4x the Wii U’s processing power, which at 3x would put it on par with PS4.

Devs were pretty clear than Zelda: BoTW looks a lot better on Switch than Wii U.

  • sinch1

There’s another meat of the console. that’s just the docking station that connects to a more power piece of hardware.

  • Hugo Stiglitz

    bullshit lol

  • Daniel Gump

If the GamePad is 720P (as I believe it is), there’s no need to waste processing power generating 1080P. The chipset could go to a lower power mode to save on battery life. It would be similar to how the iPhone 7 CPU has 4 cores: 2 standard and 2 low-power. The device can switch between the cores as needed. No offloading to the NS dock would be needed for this.

  • evilcik .

take my god damn money rigth now!!!!

  • Ash Pangster

Just hope the bring Pokémon to switch

  • JustFactsPlz

I think this is probably the case here. Otherwise they could have just put an HDMI out on the screen portion…

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

My personal guess is that the Switch will run a modified X1, with double the X1’s standard EUs.

Switch will definitely be “underpowered” compared to PS4 Pro and XBox Scorpio, but will probably hit parity with PS4 and Xbox One. But what matters for looks is more than just MOAR GIGAFLOPS, it’s art direction. Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime are both played in 480p and yet are very pretty games. MarioKart 8 is the best looking racer, and that’s comparing against games with super realistic graphics. Breath of the Wild is the most gorgeous game I’ve ever seen, and the Wii U can only render it in 720p.

And what matters the most for games is how fun they are. Improving the look can add to the fun, but only up to a certain point. Likewise, taking away from the resolution and texture detail doesn’t really take away from the fun until it hits a certain point.

  • Zach Cruz

Gamefreak is already confirmed they are making a game for NX

  • h4rr4r

    30fps is pathetic.
I would much rather have 720p at 60hz.

  • Zach Cruz

Hardwire connection through the dock is better than through Wifi.

  • sinch1

    No TFLOP it’s cart base.

  • ralph richardson

The system looks great, but I think this thing is NOT meant for kids. Just think of the cost of replacing/repairing the tablet component alone. My daughter destroyed our original wii u gamepad when she was 4 due to trying to clean the screen with water. Needless to say the replacement was not cheap and I imagine this will be even more expensive to replace.

  • sinch1

    They said it’s a custom Tegra it’s PS4 power.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The cartridge holds the full console quality game. It’s a 32GB cartridge, and could very easily have the chips stacked internally to go to 64GB or 128GB.

The difference is how the game is rendered. To preserve battery life and reduce heat, it probably clocks down and/or shuts down GPU shaders and renders the game in lower resolution at a lower frame rate, and when it’s docked it clocks up and opens all the shaders.

it’s also possible that the dock is an external GPU for the thing, which would mean in a few years when everyone’s on 4k and VR, Nintendo won’t have to do a full redevelopment to keep up graphically, you can just get a dock with a more powerful eGPU. But I don’t know. At first sight it looks like the dock is just an extension for USB cables and an HDMI port.

  • Michael Kean

you need a wifi connection to play your PC games though

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

That’s true, but it happens a lot later than you think. Intel Pentiums can drive pretty hefty GPUs (i.e. nVidia 1060) before they’ll bottleneck the system (i.e. probably couldn’t feed a 1070). The PS4’s capabilities are inferior to my gaming PC, which is rocking a GTX 750 Ti at stock clock speed.

  • https://www.twitch.tv/centaurchester Centaur Chester

I’m interested in this. I really hope it’s tegra x2 ( Parker ?) and it’s close or better then PS4. If less then 1.5 Tflops. Doubt any game company will bother with it and just make games for Sony and Microsoft consoles. But there already huge list ppl onboard. I also hope it using vulkan API, or custom version of it maybe. If it’s vulkan API and more 1.5 tflops of performance. This could be game changer for all of us. More gaming on vulkan for PC is win for us all. I’m so glad this isn’t using crapy AMD Apu. Come on and gives some spec please Nintendo and Nvidia. Please make our dreams come true. 2.0 + Tflops system would be epic when on the docking station with 1080p/60 fps. 720p mobile is fine. If true. Take my money lol.
Wonder if ark will come to NX/Switch now ? Lol. Though already play/run my own ark server and play on i7 3770k/ gta 980TI Sc.

  • Maurice Fortin

just because its running skyrim remastered means nada, look at warthunder or world of tanks, the PC version and the consolized versions are so NOT the same, same name, and same game, totally different. Most of Nv sales come from folks who associate with the name, even if the end product is utter potato.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The problem with the PS3’s CELL architecture was that it was heterogeneous and therefore weird for developers to work with. Ideally it would be utilized in a pipeline architecture — one of the CPUs optimized for processing input (i.e. a DSP) and feeding information to a more standard OOO core to crunch the game engine and AI, which would then feed info to a core optimized for feeding info between memory and a GPU.

Unfortunately until the end of the PS3’s lifetime, developers didn’t really get how to make use of it. They just hit “compile” and the code the compiler spat out was good for a 1-4 core homogeneous processor, which would mean it runs fine on the XBOX 360 (which had such a processor) but would run slow on the CELL.

(Oh, and no, the CELL was not a SoC; it did not have the GPU integrated.)

  • David Carter

You mean when the action slows down in game so you can aim? The part that slows down on purpose?

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

They’re not bottlenecked by the CPUs, they’re limited by the GPUs, which are matched / slightly outclassed by a mid-range nVidia Maxwell GPU like a GTX 750.

  • Chaltab

FLOPs are a measure of power, it has nothing to do with the storage medium the games come on.

  • Cakefish

    Maxwell or Pascal?

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

*an ultra-low-voltage i3. A desktop i3 could feed a GTX Titan without bottlenecking (though, to be fair, a CPU-intensive game would run slower with a desktop i3).

  • Kay Wrobel

With that said: does it stream Steam???? Does it at least do nVidia GameStream? Does Nintendo even support that? I would frankly enjoy Nintendo opening up a bit and allow the PC crowd in. That would be, um, *HUGE*.

  • Streetguru

Hope the tegra chip doesn’t scare away third party devs because everyone else is using more powerful AMD APUs for the next gen.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Not true. The massive bulk of the limitation is in the GPU, which nVidia’s ARM cores are capable of feeding a pretty hefty GPU quite well.

  • Mike Hearn

Ya I remember when I pulled out my PS3 on the plane back in 2005….oh wait

  • Chaltab

There is a way, it’s called portability. If Switch was just a home console then sure it could easily surpass PS4 (as Sony is easily surpassing it with PS4 pro) but the need to make it work on the go is going to limit things somewhat.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Nintendo is a master of making a game engine run smoothly, especially on underpowered hardware. The Wii had a lot of titles that looked on par with PS3 graphics despite only outputting at 480p. The Wii U has some of the best looking games out there despite being the most underpowered console.

  • Streetguru

“tegra x2 which is stronger than the xbone and ps4’s” where’s that from?

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

I’d hope they’d EYWA the Wii U’s soul to the Switch, because the Wii U had some of the best games in spite of its being underpowered. But at least we’ve got a glimpse of some of the upcoming games, and they include a MarioKart title that looks an awful lot like 8, and a Splatoon title.

  • Mike Hearn

Lol, I have SLI’d GTX 1080’s and I can only now push 60fps at 4K, lol. $1300 just in graphics cards, before we even get the the other bits

  • Art Comart

This is the best switch since the switch Joe made Tito get to beat Michael.

  • http://www.uglybabystudios.com/ JasonGW

Exactly, which is why it has to be good at *both*, not just one. As long as it can push gorgeous games at 720p on the go and 1080p at home, it’ll be fine.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Yeah, given the market for consoles it would make a lot of sense for the dock to have an extra GPU in there rather than just being a charger with ports and cards. That way they wouldn’t have to develop a new platform to push the specs higher.

  • thamer aljeri

“NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.”

hopefully there is a setting to switch between modes (no pun intended)

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

I wonder if the dock also has a GPU in it to boost graphics capabilities when the system is docked. If Nintendo wanted to keep up in terms of hardware capabilities that would make sense, as they wouldn’t have to develop a new platform in order to jump into 4k and VR, just upgrade the dock. This would also keep the opening price point competitively low while giving an option to compete at the high end.

  • sami sipilä

The horsepower is there probably. Wouldn’t bethesda have to completely remake skyrim to make it work on a ARM based CPU?

  • Thanasis Xrisantzas

Consider yourself extremely lucky if it will be able to be even half of a Ps4.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

    PS4 Pro – 4.2 TFLOPS
    XBox Scorpio – 6 TFLOPS

Nintendo isn’t trying to compete with them directly. It really only needs ~1.5 TFLOPS to get viable 3rd party support, and Nintendo hits way above their weight class when it comes to delivering fantastic looking games.

  • Papacheeks

“The Wii had a lot of titles that looked on par with PS3 graphics despite only outputting at 480p”

    What in the…..

    Are you high?

No, they had games that great artstyle, and high polygon count, but lighting, textures on games like Last of us even when being played at 720p looked amazing and nothing on NIntendo’s system could top that when it came to mo-cap, and animation from naughty dog, along with the lighting they used.

    You are seriously high.

Go say that about Halo 4 on xbox 360 it looked great and character models were amazing nothing on wii came close to that polygon count and lighting. Metroid couldn’t touch it.

Like seriously? Wii was all about fun factor not about HD textures volumetric lighting which ps3, xbox360 had in a alot of the engines that ran on their boxes.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The GCN was also a flop.

I’d guess that part of it is that although the hardware was powerful, the game size limitation really put the squeeze on 3rd-party development. The cute little mini-discs couldn’t hold nearly as big of games.

  • DroidFreud

In fact I mentioned PS4 and One, which are still considered by developers.

  • Sebbe

Probably since there is a fan, the Nintendo switch will have 2 modes 1 portable and 1 home console, when docked at home you will have unlimited energy and receive higher clocks and in portable it will lower the clock speed and TDP. Will be cool to see how much a difference there is between the “two modes”.

  • Sebbe

It says a custom chip, so it isn’t X1.

  • Matt321

It’s probably twice as efficient and effective as the competition’s AMD-based hardware, so there should be no big performance concerns, not nearly as much as traditionally for Nintendo.

  • SeeJay the WeeJay

    Allen, now who’s ASSuming?

  • Ulfsark

Nice. Is PC also receiving all this features like new API’s and all that struggle to exploit the best out of our VGA’s?

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

It won’t hit 2TFLOPS in handheld mode, unless they wanted to deal with burns and low battery life. But it’s pretty reasonable in docked mode.

They really only need to hit ~1.5 TFLOP to hit PS4/XB1 parity, which will secure 3rd party support for the life of the console (since PS4 Pro and XBox Scorpio won’t have any titles unavailable to XBox One and PS4).

I speculate that the dock might contain an additional GPU. That would make it so in the future you can upgrade to a 4k-capable / VR-capable system without having to ditch the old console. But that’s just me talking out of my butt.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

It’d be neat if (and here’s me being a hopeful idiot) the handheld contained a 1050-equivalent GPU and the dock had a supplementary GPU that could be upgraded in the future.

  • Drakulus

No you don’t. You need a Wifi connection to download PC games, just like with consoles, but you can easily play you favorite games offline if you want to. I lost my Internet for two months and did all of my PC gaming offline. I couldn’t play multiplayer games obviously, but I did play games like The Witcher 3, Doom, and Bioshock.

  • Kevin Adonay Rosales

But does it have a headphone jack :v?

The Wii U is speculated to be 352 Gflops

And about the Wii U when they announced their latest console. As a matter of fact they said that every time something new from them was announced 🙂

  • Scoopz

3 to 4 times Wii U power makes it either just below or just above Xbox One in terms of flops. However flops arent necessarily an accurate measure of power. Especially when talking AMD vs Nvidia architecture.

  • Gilbert Nicks

that is another thing I would like to see… I remember the rumor of a expansion module… a upgraded DOCK with its own APU could do it…

  • Scoopz

Wii U GPU wise outperformed the 360 and PS3 so thats not true. Where it was let down was its CPU which was an overclocked Wii CPU kept for backwards compatibility purposes. The Wii Us CPU meant that multiplatorm titles ported over struggled on the Wii Us uneven architecture. However games built from the ground up for the Wii U would look better than any PS3 title. Many multi platform developers have stated on record that it was stronger graphically

  • Michael Kean

Nvidia needs to do some better marketing then, “GameStream™ technology allows you to bring your SHIELD on the go and still access your PC’s games through a Wi-Fi connection.” Sounds interesting I’ll look more into that. Good choice of games btw.

  • TessellatedGuy

Very cool. But I hope it doesn’t turn out like the ps vita which was also a powerhouse of a portable device which was abandoned.

  • disqus_uqr3Boh0Wp

To add to what you say, Nvidia requires less power to play the games at the exact same level as an AMD card or even at a higher quality level.

  • Cereal Killer

That’s bad. I wanted to buy this one. Only if it had Radeon chip…

  • Logan

Is it possible that the hub may act as a sort of performance amplifier? It could allow for upscaled images on higher resolution screens, and allow for smooth 1080p gameplay.
We don’t know anything at his point, so it’s hard to say.

  • TessellatedGuy

There are no amd APUs that are as power efficient as the tegra apu line-up to be used as a portable. You’ll probably burn your hands off. As with all amd gpus.

  • Lukehalpin

I know what you’re talking about; I’ve owned a Wii U since day one. The Switch just needs to keep up with Xbox one and PS4, not the upcoming iterative upgrades.

Unfortunately the Vita didn’t even get 1st party support from Sony… They quickly shifted gears to the PS4 as soon as they saw the opportunity to shoot down the Xbone.

At least we know that Nintendo will support their console till the day it dies, as we’ve seen with the Wii U…

  • Mike Hearn

? Doesnt the Xbox have a hard time running 30fps at 1080 full time? Games like CoD have variable resolutions and it spends most of it’s time at 720p 30fps, right?

  • Pit Tat Chan

As rumors said, you have tag with Nintendo…… ammm, let’s see how NS, XB1, Nvidia and AMD make game industy rise again.

  • Mike Hearn

Exactly. The future games are “supposed” have variable graphics options so you can play the same game on a standard Xbox as you can a Scorpio. Will that stay around? With the number of PS4’s alone out in the wild, I will bet yes. If the Switch is at all on the level with a Standard PS4, it’ll be just fine.

  • Warren Stevens

I hope so, it makes a lot of sense. That would mean they did actually use “industry leading chips”

  • King K [2]

You’d be better off just buying a PSX. Same graphic capabilities and better games.

  • http://youtube.com/paidenthusiast paidenthusiast

It’s 720p in handheld mode and 1080p when docked in the home unit

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Agreed. Not to mention how many PCs are out there. If devs want to get their games sold, they usually target as many platforms as they can, simultaneously, as long as targeting the platform won’t hamper development.

The Wii U’s biggest problem with 3rd party development wasn’t simply that it was underpowered, it was that development for it was hard. There was the second screen — a touch screen — plus gyro, camera, microphone, speakers, and the Wii controllers that had to be dealt with. Or, you know, just ignored and all multiplayer aspects discarded. And to top it off, the development environment was really sucky. No vendor support for Unreal Engine (the most popular game development engine) or most of the other popular engines. Debugging was horrible — minutes at a time to compile, without preservation of local variables.

Nintendo has since gotten a lot better. While the Wii U doesn’t *officially* support Unreal 4, they’ve taken considerable steps. They officially support Unity, and have really good software development tools — and a great policy for independent publishers. Unfortunately that didn’t happen in time for the Wii U to be a success. From what I’m hearing, though, developing for the Switch is really good.

  • Mike Hearn

Yes, this. My HOPE!!! is they take a play from gaming PC manufacturers and turn the base station into a “upgradeable” base, like Alienware has with the Graphics card adapter for it’s laptops. Say in 2020, we can buy a “4K Switch base” that lets us use our 2017 Switch and get 4k capability on the TV.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

“However games built from the ground up for the Wii U would look better than any PS3 title”
That’s because art direction is more important for looks than graphics capabilities. 😀

No the Switch most likely has a souped up Tegra X2. I don’t even think a X1 can properly run the Skyrim Remastered Collection

  • Chaltab

Everything papacheeks said aside, there’s a big difference here. Last Gen and this Gen have a much smaller gulf than 6th Gen and Last Gen. Even if the Switch is 2 or 3x as powerful as Wii U, it’s still much closer to current gen consoles.

  • King K [2]

    >The pro controller doesn’t come with the console
Nintendo is such a laughing stock.

  • Mohammad Yasin

its gonna be stronger then ps4 pro maybe its gonna up res and the supplemental computing device too

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Depends on what figures you’re using to count FLOPS. The Wii U was counted as getting anywhere from 0.4 to 0.7 TFLOPS.

I have a suspicion that in the near future we’ll be seeing a lot more half-precision floating point stuff, which would mean GPU architectures designed for high throughput of half-precision floating point numbers will be the biggest graphical powerhouses even though the FLOP counts will be low.

  • Mohammad Yasin

if its a next gen system its gonna pass ps4

  • Chaltab

That’s just not realistic for a handheld. I’m thinking around 1.2 tflops in console mode, 600 gflops in handheld mode.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

    I’ve read anywhere from ~0.4TFLOPS to ~0.7TFLOPS.

  • Mohammad Yasin

its a next gen that makes it automatically stronger

  • http://youtube.com/paidenthusiast paidenthusiast

    Agreed

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Indeed. PS4/XB1 will still be getting all the titles developed for PS4P and XBS, just with reduced graphical options. If the Switch hits parity with those two in docked mode, Nintendo picked the right target — spec’d well enough to get 3rd party support, but spec’d low enough to make the console cheap.

  • Mohammad Yasin

from what ive noticed theres a pattern power depends on order of console release so itll be weaker then sscorpio stronger then pro

  • Daniel Gump

There’s a possibility of boosted power, but we haven’t heard anything for or against it yet. We can just see little glimpses of possibilities from patent filings. For instance, one patent did seem to indicate that Nintendo may release technology that pairs up additional processing power when 2 devices come into contact. Whether or not it’s the NS, we don’t know at this point.

What I can say is that I’m part of a licensed Wii U and Nintendo 3DS development team, and even we don’t know anything yet. It’s frustrating that indie studios aren’t given the opportunity to begin developing even 5 months before launch, but I also understand that many indie devs leaked details of the Wii U over the last few years, so Nintendo want to be as secretive as possible in the beginning. At the moment, indie devs are as in the dark as the general public about the NS. The final name wasn’t even known for us.

I’m hopeful that the NS will be backward compatible. Since the chipset is ARM, like the Nintendo 3DS, it’s much easier for backward compatibility. The NS GamePad seems to have all the same features as the Wii U GamePad, so if it can be used while on console mode (ambiguous from the teaser video, which may just indicate the dock is for charging, not a higher power mode), Wii U games could potentially be supported. That would be great because we just launched another title in the Wii U eShop last month and have another one coming later this year, and it would be disappointing to see the generation fade off so quickly to new hardware.

  • King K [2]

I already have one and they offer better and more profitable games than anything Nintendo has released in the past 10 years.

Thats not the point with Zelda. The story is what makes Zelda, Zelda. I would buy a Zelda game that plays the same as a 10 year old Zelda since I know the story will be good. Zelda is hands down better then most if not any new game coming out.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The N64 expansion pack is the first thing that comes to mind on that front. But then you go back further and find they’ve been doing it a lot longer. For instance, in some SNES cartridges you’ll find additional hardware, such as Super Star Fox having a vector graphics accelerator in the cartridge, and some NES games with better sound than 8-bit beeps having DSPs in the cartridges.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

I’ve heard X2, but Nintendo has probably been working on Switch for longer than there have existed prototypes for X2. I’m also hearing Parker, the GPU nVidia will be making for cars.

  • Si2k78

    He’s obviously joking.

  • Chaltab

On the other hand, Zelda has a lot of interactions that Skyrim doesn’t, like the ability to set grass on fire, chop down trees, glide from high places, not to mention all the Sheilah slate apps.

But then the fact that the system is apparently getting Skyrim sort of indicates that whatever else is the case, Skyrim can run on it.

  • TrainAss

If only it had a controller built in on either side of the screen. Damn,

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

It needs to hit the same ballpark as XB1 and PS4 in performance in order to get 3rd party support, but it needs to sell in the $250 range to attract buyers. Unfortunately I’m hearing it’ll be more like $300.

  • King K [2]

I don’t need to be lugging around a kindle-sized controller.

  • companyoflosers

theres a difference between slowing down and looking choppy. slowing down gameplay, slows the world within the game, but still plays the game at 60fps. what im talking about is when the framerate goes down and the gameplay starts looking choppy and less like video and more like a slideshow going by really fast. im optimistic about the Switch but lets not start making excuses for it. if your getting choppy framerates in the trailer, where they could have edited in less representative gameplay to make it look better than it normally would like most developers do, then i start asking questions.

  • Thanasis Xrisantzas

Not according to all sales in every country. The psx is dead bro.

  • companyoflosers

thats exactly what i meant. nintendo is no stranger to performance boosting via expansive hardware. which is why it makes perfect sense that the dock has more hardware for improving performance or they may sell one down the road that will. i think nintendo was even talking about making console lifespans longer via upgrades… or maybe it was a rumor i heard somewhere, idk. it would beat buying a new console every 5 years. instead they just release a new dock with better hardware or a new tablet and on and on.

  • darionnexus

me too i stopped by gamestop and called amazon but no one has it yet for pre order

Switch isn’t a next gen system. It’s just a second current gen system.

    hahahahahaha wait your serious?

    So this: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/dc79fe7d73dd1d7e4d9b9f286fec42dec14229766e766156e009c224c7685427.jpg

    Totally on par with these:

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/04b1a2142e01cefd826ccc69eace1fe7d60dd8fcdd8dcd5638ea3fa0cda324f9.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/baf8d3e89fabc2bf43264adb7c7c5dd92958059a3e92508467d13e33fb5ef8d7.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e70106c2b3d6d252a571ea66ac9b66802fd56ed681b97e49da9a04841ef01ac2.png

Galaxy looked great, and that comes down to design and polygon count of the characters. But lighting, animation with HD textures along with even higher polygon count is night and day.

I think you need to take off your nostalgia goggles and see how wii actually looked on a regular hdtv running in composite even in component.

The pic I put up is not representative of how that game looked back then on tv’s from 2008 or above.

Last of us, ratchet and clank still hold up well even on newer tv sets. Super mario outside of dolphin emulator do not.

  • Alastor Lakiska Lines

I can only speak of my experience with past Zelda games, but don’t grass and (strangely) pots regrow the moment you leave the area?

  • Daniel Morris

I mean its not unheard of Nvidia got quite a few games over to Android(Half life, Borderlands 2, ect) there was just not much motivation for publishers to do it as the games only sold like 2000 copies on android. With Nintendo behind it…It could very well be a different story.

  • Matt

I get why they dropped the Nvidia Shield Portable/Tablet sequel, they will make way more money not having to support the software, and can make bank being able to sell these chips. Lets just hope they put a solid chip in, and Nintendo makes sold games.

Honestly, I rather play Breath of the Wild on a 1080/490x and my 1440/144 monitor. I’m assuming many “nvidia backed” games will likely come to Switch, like Arkham Asylum.

  • Meffaliss

Well in their consoles. Their handhelds were using ARM-based SoCs that were made in house if I recall, until now it seems.

  • Papacheeks

    Exactly.

  • companyoflosers

if people are expecting competitive performance, they need to temper their expectations for price. you are paying extra for portability which makes things more expensive to begin with. not to mention its new hardware which hasnt had its manufacturing process streamlined yet which is a huge factor in reducing price. ive noticed alot this generation that people have been acting rather spoiled when it comes to price. whining that it should be cheaper with no consideration as to the actual value. you get what you pay for. you wanna pay 250 then youll be getting sub par performance and the console still wont make it on the market. pay more and at least you get competitive performance and the price will go down later on. no way they are releasing a portable console on par with ps4 or xbone at a launch price of less than 399. thats how much the ps4 launched for, the xbone launched for 100 more. i think thats reasonable for what we are getting. if the Switch had released at the same time as the other two nobody would be complaining about price and i dont think performance of the hardware should have to suffer for it.

  • Daniel Morris

The shield devices were not too far behind the Xbox1 to be frank.

  • Dorje

I’m wondering if NVIDIA and Nintendo worked out a deal to run NVIDIA GameStream on this. Cause if that’s on the feature set you may see a much hotter seller. Nintendo 1st party titles, with the option to couch play your PC game library, with a ‘get up and go’ tablet/mobile ability… yes please.

  • Daniel Morris

Consoles have promised continued support for xbox1 and ps4. This will be roughly the same power as those consoles. It’s not “Weak”.

  • Chaltab

True but ‘leaving the area’ gets a bit more nebulous in an open world game. Plus the fact grass is destructible is not really the impressive part, it’s the way fire spreads and even creates updraft.

  • http://www.alientower.com Laurentiu Badea

    Good luck with that!

  • Chaltab

It’s hard to tell I’ve seen some really dumb comments.

And a PC blows away the Potatostation. Are there Nintendo games on Potatostation? no.

  • shadus

Any interesting idea I heard proposed is that hub actually has a fan to allow for active cooling. The major restriction on most portables is dealing with battery life and cooling. If the Switch can use the Hub for power and cooling than it should be able to run it gpu at a significantly higher clock speed adding much need power to up it to 1080p

Wrong. The list of 3rd Party developers is quite long. Remember- This this is also a HANDHELD and Nintendo OWNS the portable market.

  • edge

Agreed. Nintendo miscalculated with the Wii that HD wouldn’t take off, or wouldn’t take off as quickly as it did. But here, 4k content has yet to really take off no matter how far the prices of 4k TVs has fallen. So if it’s in the same ballpark as the XB1/PS4 with the added ability to take the games on the go, it’ll be fine.

  • Buddydudeguy

    This guy gets it!

  • Kokusho

Gogo Nvidia ! Please prove to the world that you can fit a PS4 into a tablet ! I believe ! #NintendoSwitch

  • Buddydudeguy

60fps should be a target, always. 30fps feels like slogging through mud.

  • Papacheeks

    Even if it’s cheap?

I’m not to happy they went with very underpowered hardware and are focusing a console to be more of a handheld. But if I can get some great first party and second party games from them at a faster rate for cheap Price of 249.99 then I’m in.

  • Aaaaag

And with you being able to take the controller part off you wouldn’t have to replace the whole thing if it breaks, which would make replacing parts somewhat cheaper. Another thing is they could release new controller skins and colors, like what they did with the wii remote.

  • http://www.uglybabystudios.com/ JasonGW

Definitely. Though in fairness, HD still took a good 4+ years after Wii came out to hit 50% market penetration, and a lot of that was driven by ps3 and Xbox 360. I do think 4k will reach wide adoption faster than did HD (HD took well over a decade to really make headway), but I also think it’s less important than being able to add extra detail, color, larger levels, etc (obviously depending on game type). 1080p vs 480p was night and day. 1080p vs 4k…not so much. Honestly 4k really only becomes a lot better once you add in HDR ?

Actually NX is pretty much confirmed to have a modified version of the Tegra 2, Which is in fact on par with the ps4 in terms of gpu strength, the cpu doesn’t really matter as long as it doesn’t bottleneck the gpu.

  • Chaltab

Sort of. There was a sort of area transition when approaching one of the major islands as it switched from the low detail to complete version of it. Which, I suppose, could be seen as preferable to the hitch that usually occurs when approaching an open-air city in Skyrim.

  • Prode

What do you think is a good RPG?

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Thing about PS4’s $400 launch price is that the PS4 launched with that performance level in 2013 — a performance level that I can match with a PC I can build for $300 now, and that’s without having the benefit of bulk purchasing to push the component cost down.

Yeah, people are acting “spoiled” when it comes to price, but when you do your marketing you either charge the same price as everyone else and convince them they’re getting something much better, or you price it to a level where you think everyone will buy it.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Indeed. In a previous comment on this thread, I noted that a Pentium could feed 1060 without bottlenecking.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The “Deplorable” will go away after the election and return to “Dude” like it was before, unless I and everyone with political views in the same ballpark as me is described with a worse word in that time frame.

Meanwhile, this isn’t a political forum, so GTFO out of my bar or I, Greedo, will shoot first instead of you.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Strongly doubt that. Everything I’ve seen suggests it’s PS4 ballpark. There’s no way it’ll go into PS4P ballpark unless there’s another GPU in the docking station — and if there is, it’ll either be an optional expansion (or something they sell a year out), or they’ll price themselves out of a competitive market.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

I’ve been saying exactly that everywhere else in the thread — Switch will have a performance level in the PS4 ballpark. What they’ll do with it, though, will be spectacular.

  • ROBERT PRESTI

    So, what are the specs?

  • Grez

Agree. Nintendo taps a new market if this is included. I would think they would also include some Nintendo games in the Now service when used on the Switch. It’s a win win for Nvidia and Nintendo

  • edge

They’ve “switched” (pun intended) the concept from the Wii U. With Wii U, the guts were in the base and it just streamed video to the Gamepad. With Switch, the guts are in the tablet itself, and the base apparently is just a dock that outputs to the TV. It sounds dumb, but can we confirm that the screen is touch? From what I’ve seen they’ve highlighted the detachable controllers but I didn’t see anyone touching the screen. I’d just assume it is because not having touch on a portable screen these days would be just stupid.

Likely slower, pretty poor display, no dual controllers built in, absolutely no Nintendo game titles – totally not the same thing.
Also if Nintendo and Nvidia decided to make it together I guess this could had connected to Nvidia Grid and replaced their Shield product, they could even had gone so far as to let games stream from, in Nvidia´s case because they are always like that, Nvidia PCs to it (maybe even the other way too?)

Anyway, it’s a Nintendo portable with the best screen and processing power ever which also do casual multi-player on the go which is nice 🙂

Honestly for kids there is still such a great benefit, especially for my 10 year old who can just simply take his game play with him when we travel. Beats having to have separate 3DS and home console if combined. The focus on local co-op play is still great for families, nobody capture the magic of 4 player co-op like Nintendo with games like Super Smash Bros Brawl and this console has that local co-op appeal.

  • carpediemXIV

Only time will tell my friend. Also, I’d give it a chance before assuming what it is capable of, considering what they have shown us has not been the finished version of the product.

Coming from a PC gamer with a GTX 1080 FTW SLI setup, I still managed to be hyped about the Nintendo Switch’s reveal. This goes to show that graphics is not the only deciding factor or what dictates how much fun you can get from a product.

And if you still end up not liking it, it’s ok because at least you tried it out. Cheers.

  • h4rr4r

I think you don’t understand what hertz means. It is the SI unit for once a second. What we are measuring could be frames of video, ac cycles or anything else.

ACTUALLY dmbsht Samsung has almost double the market share of Apple in the mobile market AND Google for that matter. Apple BARELY has tablet market share and decreasing more and more (android still has much higher market share in the tablet space). Camera Market where the heck did you make that one up from lol. Watching the trailer where they very quickly picks it up from the “hub” and the screens jumps to the smaller device from the tv. Seeing this I have hard to believe that there could be any sort of SLI/cross fire between the hub and the tablet.

Great idea though, but it would again raise the price and it wouldn’t be the easiest way to develop for.

To have full Wii U backwards compatibility… there should be support to have a switch docked and one in your hands with them communicating… and a cd drive and wii controller support in the dock. I really hope they do this. add (multi) touch support and you get 3DS compatibility too. All >gamecube systems in onde device!

If the switch has multi touch support it could even play the games they will create for phones, like mario run, without the controller parts!

I really hated they didn’t support two gamepads for the wiiU … in pikmin3 bingo battle one player has the edge with the map… this could be solved with a multi switch setup !

Yeah, it used to be called PSX before the PS2. But I don’t think it was ever officially known by that name, even if all the magazines and stuff from 20 years ago called it that.

  • Doland

They should Nintendo Switch to a new name. This is worse than Wii U. Parent will walk in stores and think it’s some kind of swap out deal rather than a new console. They also tried the same 3rd party deals when Wii U came out. Batman Armored Edition anyone? Nintendo is falling into the same trap, AGAIN.

    KEK

  • paraagent

just call it the “NS” nobody called the ds the ‘ dual screen’ . that made THEM horrible..

  • Elli

because the most well known version, the ps1 was released.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

And Apple get the money and have the products which if nothing else consistently is one of the best.
Smartphone cameras have completely replaced compact camera sales and most likely some system camera and video camera sales too if you haven’t noticed. They also play music. How many do you know who have bought a dedicated music player the last year?
Regardless Nintendo doesn’t own whose markets. Whatever you just decide that no they don’t because there’s lots of portable products out there or whatever you view it as Apple having caught a huuuge part of the profits in that market is up to you really. I don’t care.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

I wonder if Apple may make more money than Nintendo on game sales too though?

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

Pretty sure the camera result are very close on the top end Samsung and Apple devices. I don’t know the current spec for the Apple displays but surely they went AMOLED too? May be higher resolution but if so most likely because Apple doesn’t think there’s much gain / worth it to go higher.

  • Jon

do you mean PSone? I wouldn’t say that is “well known”.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

What I meant is that it’s the Nintendo portable with the best screen and processor power ever.
As in it beats the Wii U controller and the 3DS and the DS and the GBA and the GB.
I totally don’t love Nvidia and I don’t really care for Nintendo hardware either.

  • Gemmol Lewis

in the trailer, they showed no kids playing with their handheld for the first time ever, only teens, and adults @mike_hearn:disqus

  • Gemmol Lewis

no streaming, its a real handheld that can turn into a console

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

“ever for a Nintendo product” or “the Nintendo portable with the best ..”

I’m relating it to all other Nintendo portables not to all other portable products on the market and in history.

  • VG Collector

I had a pre recall Shield Tablet and then a post recall one. It was a very nice tablet, but if you think the Switch is the same thing, you’re sadly mistaken.

  • Hisashi Prince

“Camera Market” i think he meant Instagram and the likes….

  • Dan Eagen

Ok I misunderstood. You are correct on all points. 🙂 I am brand agnostic, I have had just about everything from the original game boy and nes. Skipped a few crazy overpriced systems but did have Dreamcast and all the later major systems. Been building my own PCs for a decade and have used everything except AMD processors, but I am hoping that will change in the spring. :). I would LOVE running a true octal core Zen with 16 threads.

  • Dan Eagen

The shield had a catastrophic hardware failure. Nvidia is not great at mobile, every mobile venture they have tried has failed. Maybe they have figured it out but I doubt it. Denver was a flop when the branch predictors missed and they have never been able to keep thermals or power usage in check. Great for desktop, supercomputing, and laptops, utter crap with mobile.

  • Dan Eagen

Apple still doesn’t use AMOLED but at least that helps them avoid a pentile display.

  • InaneDragon

1- Tegra processor hasn’t changed significantly since the post-recall Shield Tablet.
2- RAM & NVRAM size/heat characteristics haven’t changed significantly since the post-recall Shield Tablet.
3- Mobile screens have not changed significantly since the post-recall Shield Tablet.

Which of these, having not made significant improvements, will be a significant improvement over the Shield Tablet in the Switch?

Proprietary games, sure, I’ll grant you. My point being they could just abandon hardware & focus on good games that play on the tablets people already own.
Controllers, as an owner you know the Shield supports controllers & multiple at that (and if you feel like it, there’s the controller with mount for the tablet, though I admit the Switch’s solution is more elegant).

I don’t think it’s the “same thing”, I think it’s sufficiently equivalent to make people question the merit vs Nintendo following in Atari’s footsteps and doing what they do well – make games.

  • InaneDragon

I’ll give you the marketing power argument (which translates over to the partners). However, the Wii & Wii U had about the same number of partners at launch… how’d that work out?

  • Dan Eagen

360 + ps3 is roughly 2.4 TFLOPs (most of that coming from ps3). The desktop GPU RX460 puts out 2.2 TFLOPs. If you think this little handheld is going to be more powerful than the 460 you are nuts. That is not possible with today’s technology.

  • VG Collector

Then buy a good gaming computer….all else pales in comparison. Me, I buy the systems that have the games I enjoy…plus I have an awesome gaming computer!

  • Dan Eagen

If it’s arm (it is) then it’s an identical architecture, just a different OS.

  • Cameron Standring

I’m excited about Pascal because of everything I’ve heard about its alleged power and heat efficiency compared to Maxwell, it has nothing to do with the desktop GPUs.

  • VG Collector

Nvidia, you power my gaming computer and now you’ll power my next game console. Thank you for your great products.

  • Dan Eagen

    LOL

  • VG Collector

Post recall/pre recall Shield Tablets had the same K1 processor. The Switch will have at minimum an X1, possibly an X2 or some hybrid thereof. That’s a big difference in itself. The dev kits for Switch have 4GB ram, the Shield Tablet has 2GB. Plus Nvidia has stated how much they have optimized the software end for the Switch. You have to be in complete denial if you really believe that the two are equal. That would be like saying the original iPad and the iPad Air were the same thing.

  • InaneDragon

After looking back over it a second time, fair enough. My info on the K1 vs X2 differences was way off.

Mistake on my part for failing to properly verify the information I had gathered.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

To not use an AMD processor in the last 10 years – what a blessing!
Personally I have a Phenom X4 9850 and I could afford something used or not of more or less any kind and it’s a fscking pain but I can’t decide what to get because I want to get the best value.
I so wish I had bought the i7 5820K back in Christmas 2014 and be done with it. Nowadays the USD is almost worth 50% more in Swedish kronor which is my currency 🙁 (Having the money placed in US stocks would had solved that with a gain of about 150% in SEK since then.)

  • DMF Savior Senpai!

    1. I have a killer PC that does everything better.
    2. It can’t Nintendo. NS is the next generations 3DS + Wii , merging handheld and console gaming into one.
    3. NVidia is powering it which probably means they are done with Shield.
    4. If I didn’t want it in the first place, I won’t be needing it now.
    .

  • VG Collector

I had a Panasonic HD tube TV that could output 480p, 540p and 1080i. Some Wii games when played on a 480p native TV looks as good as many early PS3 games. Now, overall the PS3 why better graphically, but that wasn’t the point here. Also, if you’re going to cherry pick your picture, here’s one for you of Mario Galaxy 2 on Wii…. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/02e9eb2cde16edbcb5addd65fdaeba66577eb687822e68eeb0b1e324664d3eaf.jpg

  • VG Collector

PS4 doesn’t do it and the Xbox One only recently started doing it. I’m hopeful that there will be cross buys on eShop games that are ported to the Switch, but I don’t expect anything from the Wii U or 3DS physical media.

  • VG Collector

It’s already been said that the dock is for power and TV/USB connections only. I wouldn’t be surprised if something like the Nvidia Grid is available at some point in time though.

  • VG Collector

Thank you for your sincere and honest followup.

As for me, I’m a tech geek and can’t wait for this thing to come out!

  • stoopered17

First off, the S7 destroys the iPhone 7 in camera quality, especially in the ISO try watching the comparisons. Also Sony makes the Apple camera, so it’s not even Apple. I’m pretty sure services like Slacker, Pandora, Spotify, Rdio, and Sirius are pretty significant in the music industry. I don’t know anyone who buys music from itunes anymore, unless they use the iPhone and are clueless about technology.

  • stoopered17

They want more money, and idiots will buy anything. The could do something insane like remove the Aux port and people will still buy their crap

  • Greg M

If mobile becomes the primary platform you’re just going to get swarmed with half-assed titles that have in-app purchases in each direction. Do you really want a bunch of Nintendo games with touch only controls? I don’t get how having a console can be a bad thing for Nintendo or the consumer. I’m excited for this device and to make another leap in the portable realm of gaming. This is the first we’re seeing of a portable/home based console and who knows what this could lead to in the future.

  • VG Collector

…and a PS4 has about a 1/6 the processing power of my computer… yet people still enjoy games on their PS4’s, so what’s your point?!?

  • Josh Castleman

The Order is a great game.

  • VG Collector

The PS3 had about 422Gflops, that’s 1/6th of what you stated. You might want to double check your facts.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

So it was just rumors up until the launch?
I wrote a reply but it’s stuck in moderation, I removed 88 and replaced it with 8???8 if that was it but it’s still stuck and I don’t know what is wrong with it.
But regardless DxO mark put the leader Google Pixel at 89 and iPhone 7 and 86 and from the very first comparison over at Cnet it was obvious that the S7 had better images so I stopped after that one.
I wrote a bit about how I hadn’t thought my comment through and how it was about smartphones having replaced among others cameras and music-players (in this case also become a gaming device) and how Apple had made money out of that but if one count all the components and services then for sure there’s many making money out of it and no single player taking it all.

  • VG Collector

No, the games are on the cartridge other than patches. It will play the same.

  • Captain_Tom

    A new API for Nintendo?

If only PC gamers could use it. Oh well AMD has us covered 😀

  • JasonBall

You talking to me? That was my point.

  • kopaka7

So this will be running Pascal, right?

  • JasonBall

    Oh!

  • Gemmol Lewis

    seems like it

  • evolucion8

Hope so, its bad having a duopoly on graphic cards and CPU, let alone a console duopoly lol

  • evolucion8

Doubt it, its based on ARM and it can be close but outperforming it? Must reach high level of unfeasible power consumption just like Tegra K1 had.

  • evolucion8

    Get a clue rtard lol.

  • Dan Eagen

If rumors are true there will be a Zen APU with HBM on-die for the GPU. If they can bring something out that fan run 1080p on medium settings at 45+ fps then the cost of gaming would come down dramatically. The 9850 isn’t bad, but if all you do is gaming and have the money for a dgpu then a Pentium would probably be your best bet. Or an i3 if you could swing the extra bucks. Hopefully all that changes in a few months.

  • heavenshitman1

Well , it’s a ‘good’ game from what I gather, astounding visuals and maybe good story with poor interactivity and derivative gameplay.
I understand that games value, but with mediocre meta reviews, its not the sort of game that should have sold like it did.
Both PS4 and to lesser extent XB1 (Ryse Son of Rome) in the early days made successes where they shouldn’t.

Because the userbase dont know real gameplay, just graphic drones (for a large part).

Most mock Nintendo for their games (and many games they make are simpleton). But the best Nintendo games are ingenuity, and they don’t sell (as well)

  • Miyamoto

But tell us Nvidia, is it a custom Pascal Tegra?

  • nvikelo nyathi (gamertech)

    lol

  • Thanasis Xrisantzas

Nx is pretty much a handheld, with a dock?Do you really believe that you can have a 1.8tf GPU inside a confined space with passive cooling?I will be very surprised if it will be half of it.

  • Thanasis Xrisantzas

People must have down to earth expectations, that’s my point!!!

  • Thanasis Xrisantzas

Probably less.Even if the GPU is capable how will the cool it effectively inside a handheld, when the big systems with 10 times more space have problems with heat.

  • http://www.zodiacsoulmate.me/ Mingyao Liu

Please make the custom chip faster than Tegra X2…… X2 is good, but it’s nowhere close to PS4 or Xbone…. 256 Pascal core is very nice, but it’s not good enough. please make it faster, I believe people will pay more for a thicker nintendo switch with better graphic and more battery…

  • Ronald

show me where the S7 destroys the iPhone7 in the camera department? S7 photos are oversaturated and over processed. iPhone also has superior OIS

  • silkylove

I don’t know why people keep expecting Nintendo to go third party when they have more money than Sony. Not just the Sony gaming division. All of Sony. I keep hearing the argument though, mostly on gaming forums. If you like Nintendo games then buy the hardware, or pirate if that’s your thing. If you don’t like Nintendo games then there are plenty of other options. However to expect them to go third party for convenience sake is not realistic when they have been highly profitable doing exactly what they are doing.

  • Marc Garcia Jovells

    I love it.

  • Arvidex

    Lol i sweden i pre-ordered it about 6 months ago 🙂

  • pat

I would use the word custom to explain how good the switch is gonna be, if read the blog above it gives quite a few hints. The best bit is 500 man-years of effort in coming up with the design across every facet.

  • pat

The wii did fine but the wiiu could’ve done better but it doesn’t change the fact that it was a good console with not enough games that couldn’t compete with the power wanting crowd. Nintendo still makes the best games but have always stood for fun over what people think a console maker should be. I for one am glad that they are not another Sony or Microsoft. Have fun paying for V R while for the same price or less i get a different way of thinking in a console.

  • pat

Move along come up with some think new in your agument against Nintendo, let me guess whats next its not powerful enough. If you know the future go buy a lottery ticket.

  • pat

Thank you someone who knows what they talking about.

  • pat

You gotta know when to stop talking crap- seen a ipod ad lately? Apple makes great product but they are trending down cause the market place have caught up with design as well as advetising, plus they are much cheaper options for what apple sells. Canon are doing great in the camera market. In australia an iphone can set you back anywhere from $600-$1200 which is alot of money to some.

I seen some info from a french site that says the switch is on par with the PS Pro, one of the reasons they choose nvidia is 1080p 60frames display 4k playback which for movies. Gameblog .com in france- they said ps4 was 4trillion the switch is 3.986 trillion in computing power but the switch had design and tech. Its on a youtube video but you have to get someone to translate it

  • pat

You sir win the prize for being slow and stupid, your prize is to never get it, Sony or Microsoft will be calling you tomorrow.

  • Chaltab

I’m guessing keeping it cool is part of what those “500 Man-years” were spent figuring out, and we don’t know if it’s passively cooled in console mode. I recall some of the (accurate) leaks mentioned the dev kits had a noisy fan.

  • rafoix

Nintendo makes their money the same way Apple, Steam, Sony and Google do. 30% cut on all software sales. Giving other stores a cut seems shortsighted especially since tablet sales have tanked since phablet phones became a thing.

Android is also a bad platform for Nintendo gaming. Performance issues and inefficient battery usage have plagued Android since its inception.

You know what else Nintendo does well. Quality hardware. It is very easy to find older used Nintendo systems in perfect working conditions.

  • Salamihawk

“The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.”

Currently, the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards are based on the Pascal architecture. The Nvidia Tegra X1 is Maxwell-based. Does that mean that the Nintendo Switch has a Pascal GPU in it? It certainly would make sense given the Pascal’s excellent mobile performance/power consumption. Technically it could be feasible, seeing how the development times for Pascal and Switch coincide.

May just be wishful thinking, though.

  • HunsonAbadeer

Probably, it would make sense actually, imagine the power of a energy-efficient gtx 1050 for mobile games, that’s what I think Nintendo Switch could be, hope that’s the case, Oh well, March isn’t that far away.

  • HunsonAbadeer

I’m guessing it will be priced close to $250 USD based on how much the nvidia shield tablet K1 cost + nvidia shield controller.

  • 2Kids Entertainment

About time a console company joins nvidia instead of amd xD excited to see how this will compare the nvidia shield tablet/tv but no doubt this has potential

  • http://www.youtube.com/thegreatkaitsu Kaitsu

They make money off people who put their apps on their app store, and that’s. The way they get money is different than how Nintendo gets money. Nintendo gets revenue, Apple just gets people paying a certain amount to have their stuff on the store. Even if it’s a game nobody downloads, they still made money.

  • HunsonAbadeer

The rumor is that former NX is behind ps4 in raw power, Nintendo isn’t trying to compete with PCMR instead is offering something PS Vita couldn’t.

  • Gotcha47

Hmmm before i would buy i would need more to know about specs. Need to see it for real and what will it cost then there is what games will there be. How is it’s position against the xbox and ps4 and tablets ! Not excited especially since they do not give specs etc until next year. The ps4 pro is now and vr is now so i will comparise it to this one.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMacco26 Macco26

Still, it was one of the selling point of the Wii U (full Wii compatibility). Including the possible peripherals sharing and re-use, I guess. We’ll see this time.

  • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW71dHNstR9wpd9tIrxfaqg Steven Fox

The NEW API is the thing to watch out here. I really hope this is built on the latest Nvidia tech(Pascal).
Knowing that the 8 core CPUs in both PS4 and X1 are actually mobile parts with low clocks gives this an advantage(although pretty sure this is Running on custom ARM cores, as NVIDIA don`t have a x86 license)
If the GPU has less than 512Shaders it will really struggle to keep up with PS4/X1 compatible games in a year or two.
The way the commercial shows it is that the dock clearly has no additional performance benefits, it`s more like a docking station with lots of ports and to allow the hardware to run without limits.
If this has less than 3hrs battery life will be totally pointless on the go.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

I can afford something like an i7 6800K too. It’s just all about what I want to spend the money on 🙂
As for “cost of gaming coming down” I’ve played on the NES and I’ve played Quake in 320×200 where it ran very well on Pentium 90 MHz with 16? 32? 64 MB of RAM. You get more than that in whatever model of the Raspberry Pi so it already have come down a lot but so has the possibilities and demands and people have a similar capacity to spend so they do ..

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

I don’t talk about the iPod you idiot. The dedicated MP3 (and video) players (and even tablets) and compact cameras have been replaced by the smartphone. More smartphones are sold than walkmans ever were.

  • Dan Eagen

Yup first source I read was bad, I just checked a half dozen more and it was about 650 GFLOPs. Remember that the CPU is counted when they put out those numbers.

  • guywhodoesstuff

The difference with the Wii U and the Switch is that the Wii U had a touchscreen that needed to be developed just for that feature.

  • njevans

lol.. why would I buy a Shield when I could buy this and play Nintendo games on it?

  • stoopered17

Lol it has a better OIS lolololol dude you lost ALL credibility.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

Have you not seen the huge focus on power lately? They have manage to cram desktop GTX 1080 parts into laptops for crying out loud.

I think nVidia have been working very hard to fix their issues with mobile. If there is one thing Nintendo do well its make reliable hardware, if they have faith in nVidia to deliver I’d be shocked if they didn’t.

  • Snayperskaya

Switch is actually Shield Tablet 2. Considering that it was released two years ago I suppose it’s OK to be “slower”.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

This is Nintendo, there is no way they will want to sell the parts separately and rightly so – it will just confuse people as to if its a handheld or a console. This was a problem with Wii U even though it was bundles, people thought it was a tablet for Wii.

We don’t even know if it has touch at all yet, but it would be silly not to as if it could somewhat replace any other tablet you own too it increases the chance of you taking it with you.

Pretty sure they also said from the start that they want this to be independent of the Wii U and 3DS, so I wouldn’t hold my breath for any compatibility. Although it certainly would be nice if they at least gave a discount to upgrade digital Wii U titles to the Switch, like they do for Wii virtual console titles on Wii U. I don’t want to have to buy my Mario Kart 8 track DLC again.

  • Aeroleia

Like, I’m always on the move due to my job. I travel a lot and I need entertainment. I love Nintendo exclusive games. So Switch is my best switch!

  • AverageAnimeFan

Final Fantasy, The Elder Scrolls, Persona, Tales series, Kingdom hearts, Fire Emblem, Monster hunter, Star Ocean, just to name a few. I’m just answering your question and listing some good RPG series. I personally find Zelda to be quite enjoyable to play.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

    Maybe it is, maybe not.
His claim was that the Shield was the same thing which it’s not though.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

I will be very surprised if its not simply 720p as that would allow the system to easily match or beat Wii U quality graphics when portable, any higher and you are just wasting power.

Then there is the fact Nintendo have always been very conservative on their portable screen resolutions, with the 3DS being a puny 800×240 and even the Wii U Gamepad was only 854x480p. So 1280×720 is a significant upgrade for them and readily available, I don’t think anyone has even made a 900p LCD.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

As a render target yes, but I don’t think there has ever been an LCD made that is 900p which is hugely relevant.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

You seem to misunderstand what people are referring to when they say the CPU is bottlenecking the GPU. They aren’t referring to just rendering a simple benchmark scene to the GPU, they are referring to actually running games.

A slow CPU bottlenecks a high-end GPU BECAUSE it can’t run the game at a resolution that maxes out the GPU. I had Assassins Creed Syndicate bottleneck at 1080p Ultra settings on an i5 2500, it couldn’t hold 60fps. I upgraded to an i5 4690 and that stabalised the game.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

Its actually a tricky thing to place as nVidia make it sound like its using their latest GPU tech which would be more advanced than PS4/Xbox One. Of course its not going to be clocked as high or have as many cores, but it does make it more efficient.

People are also underestimating just how fast the high-end ARM cores are now. There is every possibility that the Switch could have a CPU comparable in power to the Xbox One/PS4.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

There would be absolutely no point in putting a GPU in the dock as it would just increase cost and complexity. It wouldn’t be able to instantly switch between internal and external GPU, it would crash if you suddenly undocked it or if the dock pins got a little dirty all sorts of weird things could happen. There would be just way too much to go wrong.

On the other hand just look at the latest laptops with a full GTX 1080 in them, they too only crank up to full power when plugged into the mains. Its clear nVidia have been working on this sort of thing for a while now so there is no reason why the Switch couldn’t work the same way, those vents on the top look pretty huge so I think its safe to assume that is how it works.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

People here are forgetting, nVidia TFLOPS are not equal to AMD TFLOPS, they just aren’t comparable in any meaningful way.

On PC for example, an nVidia card with considerably less TFLOPS than an AMD card can perform just as well or better.

  • chibiwings

Xenoblade.. Certified Classic IMHO. It will stand the test of time.

  • Thanasis Xrisantzas

    We will see 🙂

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

You are forgetting that a 1TFLOP nVidia GPU performs significantly better than an 1TFLOP AMD GPU.

There is the also the fact there is NO other system where you would be able to play games even close to PS4 quality as portable as this. Streaming doesn’t count as its not 100% reliable (heck, I can’t get remote play to work well even in the home) or always available.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

Its not exactly the same as Wii U was just another home console with a crap controller compared to PS4/Xbox One.

Even if its slightly weaker, the appeal of being able to buy it then play it ANYWHERE cannot be dismissed.

  • DroidFreud

Nope, take a gtx1060 and a rx480, and see the performance difference between both, the first do better only in dx11 respect the second (that have an evident driver problem).

  • InaneDragon

Nintendo has about 4.6 billion dollars in cash reserves. Sony, on the other hand has about 21 billion dollars in cash reserves. That’s nearly 5 times the amount of money Nintendo has.

And unlike Nintendo, Sony hasn’t turned a quarterly loss in years. Nintendo is losing nearly 40% this quarter, lost nearly as much during this same quarter last year, and in between has not turned anywhere near the profit needed to make up for those losses.

  • Tom Kometer

nice job nvidia… hoped u jumped on concoles once more, have u in my computers since g5 on mac 18 years ago. really hope its the pacal chip with some given love from both sides

  • japananimenews

they did not say it’s a Tegra X1 chip, it’s custom Tegra processor

  • Ivan Kovalev

Yes, as a pc gamer I know how cards work, and there are a lot of cards that are made to be compact. Ps4 uses outdated technology from 2010, here is a laptop on part with the ps4, which is very thin, the Lenovo y50. I mean for a console peasant it may be hard, but that laptop I showed you is already 5 years old, and now they have far more powerful cards to fit in that same space, you would also be surprised how compact cooling could be if you knew cooling worked, since the fan doesn’t cool the part directly.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Super Mario 3D World needs either a port or a sequel, and fast.
Same with Smash Bros. A Christmas-time release of Smash would be huge. They might have to upgrade their servers for online play with how many people would be jumping on it.
Full-featured Super Mario Maker port — or new version — after six months. Not at launch time because they don’t have full control over the content in Super Mario Maker, and people getting reacquainted with Nintendo need to see a lot of Nintendo’s masterful level designs before letting people experience something else.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Good points, all. The only thing about a GPU in the dock is that it would keep the base cost affordable ($100 GPU performance level) but make the system expandable so it could accommodate VR and 4k in the future.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Yep, the thing about cartridges is that they’re not just memory, they’re whatever hardware you feel like jamming in there.

But in carts of the size suggested for Switch, it’s probably just flash. Though it’d be cooler if it were 3D XPoint. Probably not going to happen in a console any time soon, though.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

There is more to improving the platform than the GPU and having something better in the base unit would break the portability and just be bottlenecked by the rest of the system unless they had a whole console in there.

Its also not simple interfacing from one unit to another. SoC do not usually have things like PCI Express so it would increase the cost of development and potentially decrease the power efficiency to do so. Just not practical IMO.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

I did the same years ago and encountered exactly the same issues.

nVidia usually games will run at launch, even if they might not be optimal. When I had AMD games would routinely not work at all until AMD patched their drivers much later. They are supposed to be somewhat better now but I’m just not willing to risk it.

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

I don’t see how that could work with the ability to just instantly undock the thing though. Just look at external GPUs for PC, tons of problems getting them to work plug and play even when on the desktop never mind while gaming.

  • Matt

Switch gpu is based off the top tier geforce graphics ie pascal not maxwell so no matter what the Switch is in a different league graphics wise….

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

I just can’t see them having it expandable, that would drastically increase the cost NOW as SoC have as little expandability as possible to decrease cost and increase power efficiency. It would also mean the dock connector had to be much more advanced to handle higher bandwidth use. So basically, it cranks up the cost for so little return.

  • Matt

I want specially after Nvidia published an article saying the Switch has graphics based off the top tier geforce cards means Switch is in a different league then ps4 mobile tegra or not….

  • Thanasis Xrisantzas

Don’t get me wrong i would like NN to be a powerful system, but knowing NN i don’t think that will be the case….Lets wait and see.

  • TessellatedGuy

    “Likely slower”
Not true, my shield tablet runs marshmallow and is crazy fast even today.
    “Pretty poor display”
Actually, it’s got a 1080p display compared to the switch which is rumored to be a 720p display, so obviously you’ve done no research there.

  • FutureFox

Cry, Havoc! And Let slip the dogs of war. This is a gamer.

  • Capt Styx

What’s the potential for streaming to the system like a Nvidia Shield?

  • FutureFox

Not a very fair comparison since Sony is in multiple industries.

  • Ivan Kovalev

Well the reason Im confident it’s at least on par is because there has been a rumor months ago that it has been using a tegra 2 chip, without nvidia confirming it. Now that that nvidia confirms it’s there chip that rumor was true, so the other half of the rumor is probably credible. However Nintendo may be using the less powerful x1 (More powerful than wiiU). If so, bethesda wouldn’t have agreed to develop games for it. Since it would be more work for them, they cant just control paste the 2011 skyrim version to this console, they would of have to re-port it entirely, thus it has to be atleast on par with the ps4.

  • Ivan Kovalev

    *900p confirmed

  • Kaihaku

It’s kind of like Pokemon GO… Sure, someone else tried it before them (Ingress) but it took the brand power of Pokemon to get it mainstream.

  • Kaihaku

Graphics are something. Not everything, not nothing. I like a game with a good balance of solid gameplay, compelling graphics/sound effects, and engaging narrative. This isn’t a political campaign, there’s no reason to be absolutist. I’ve played games with stick figure characters before…because the gameplay was fun…but I prefer games with more compelling graphics.

  • CrazyEyes

We wants it we wants it gollum gollum gollum

  • Stephen

probably Pokemon Go…and he’s probably one of the 20mil that pre-signed up for Mario Run… XD

  • ConditionOakland

suddenly 765 people are technology experts, always happens when new tech gets announced hahaha

just give me mature games Nintendo and i might buy your Switch

(mature doesn’t need to be gears of war or god of war) just give me some games with a mature setting/storline and no talking mushrooms

  • mgsfoxhound2

Ya I think you you hit it right on the T. Without good software games backing Nvidia up not enough people were buying shield tablets. I can see lots of people buying this for unpresidented mobile graphics for NINTENDO games. I think Nvidia did a smart thing. Before they wanted cake and eat it too

3 main reason for stay on the fence for buy the nintendo switch or nvidia shield tv pro
1st nintendo switch will allow to add external hard drives? Micro sd or pendrives? And like xbox one and nvidia shield tv play movies and games?
2ND online gaming and store, also a better estorbe like ps plus membership and don’t forget the tournament like ESL.
3RD About the so called special tegra chip, it’ll be available also for nvidia shield tv??

  • mgsfoxhound2

Yes since you can make it mobile tech has to be lower basically selling a better new 3ds that connects to a TV

  • Alexander Vander

    Maybe 5 to 8 hours..

    199.99 basic to 249.99 bundle.

    Ps3 – 2006

nVidia’s propensity for proprietary API’s means this might actually be it’s weakness. Remember the original Xbox? nVidia abandoned OpenCL in favor of it’s own CUDA architecture.

So far the Tegra/nVidia Shield has yet to find a market, it’s too weak to be a game device by itself (remember the Ouya?) and largely been used in TV-extender schemes because that’s all it’s really been good for. Which one might ask “Why not just play the game in front of the computer”

Enter the Nintendo Switch. Solves the latter problem. The main CPU/GPU is in the tablet part, and when it’s docked, is there a more powerful 4K capable GPU/CPU in there? Who knows.

  • http://www.zodiacsoulmate.me/ Mingyao Liu

i hope the next gen is not called Nintendo Switch DS

  • Shawn Fenn

Tegra? Geforce? Hopefully, the games will have G-Sync support and 4K resolution compatibility. No wonder NVIDIA is a great partner to every major computing brand in gaming so far.

  • http://www.jopv.net/ Jop

Not true, my shield tablet runs marshmallow and is crazy fast even today.

OS speed is something completely different from game quality.

Actually, it’s got a 1080p display compared to the switch which is rumored to be a 720p display, so obviously you’ve done no research there.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Pixel count is only one of the factors of picture quality.

  • Dan Eagen

Very highly binned parts running at slightly reduced clocks, which is still impressive. Can you point to any one single mobile Tegra design win? A successful win? Nvidia marketing is often better than their execution. Maybe this will be the time, where we see AMD make a killer desktop chip and Nvidia makes a killer mobile chip. Im not holding my breath.

  • http://www.jopv.net/ Jop

Even 480p at 60 FPS is better than 30 FPS in any case.

  • Mark Burley

I was being flippant but at heart it’s mobile technology with playstation pro and scorpio on the horizon I could care less. If I want to play mobile games I have my Moga pro and increasingly powerful phones and tablets but that’s my opinion.

  • paraagent

I’m wondering if I can lay down this device? With the vent on top dust cab fall in.

  • Shankovich

At the very least I meant it’ll have great 1st party content. We’ll see how it goes from there, Nintendo showed lists like this for Wii U. The reaction is stellar though, I think they have a winner on their hands outside of the Nintendo faithful

  • TheSlamma

“Based on the high performing GeForce tech” yes, like a 2 cylinder engine based on the same tech as a V-12. Doesn’t make it powerful, in fact this thing is a dog.

  • Thibaut Noah

You never played a 4k game to say something like this.
I played rise of the tomb raider in ultra 4k on my 4k 55″ lg oled and it IS night and day with 1080p, you have no clue.

  • http://www.iamnvidiaman.com I are Jen Hsun

So it is a Mario enabled shield tablet….

    Hmm, no thanks.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

    You’re misunderstanding the whole concept.

Pascal is an architecture, not a specific chip. You can have a Pascal chip with 32 CUDA cores, and that’s the kind of thing you’d see in a low-end smartphone or tablet. A typical card for a PC would have anywhere from 128 to 1024 CUDA cores (anything lower than 128 yields not much benefit over typical integrated graphics), while a PC specialized for gaming would have anywhere from 1024 to 4096. The more cores, the more powerful the GPU is. My graphics card at home is a GTX 750 (512 Maxwell cores). The GPU in a PS4 or XB1 has performance in the same kind of ballpark, probably a class down (i.e. similar to a 740).

We don’t know what chip is in the Switch, but if it’s like a Pascal version of a Tegra X1, then that’s 256 Pascal cores which perform slightly better — but more importantly, suck less power — than Maxwell cores, putting the performance on par with PS4 and XB1.

  • Xavier Krebs

But Sony losses 70m with ghostbusters this year and in May of this year after 40m ps4 Sony begings to get benefits from the console.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Nope, the Wii U had about half the number of partners at launch — and more importantly, they didn’t have middleware partners like Epic (Unreal Engine) and Unity at launch.

What will attract 3rd party devs to the Switch most generally will be that it takes no effort to develop for it above and beyond what it takes to develop for other platforms, so if you make it for PS4 and XB1, might as well also make it for Switch. The Wii U was a nightmare to develop for. Different architecture, no support for Unreal (and support for Unity was very late, but it did eventually show up), crappy compile times and testing capabilities…

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

Doesn’t matter that your Shield tablet are “crazy fast” even today.
The Nintendo Switch will AT-LEAST have the same chip but much more likely a new more powerful one.

  • Lawng~Dawng

Oh yeah, I heard they found some extra p’s

  • InaneDragon

I agree 100%, but this was in direct response to silkylove’s claim to the opposite, that Nintendo is doing so well financially that it’s beating out all of Sony Corporation. In spite of the fact that most investors are now leary of Nintendo because the opposite trend has been going on for long enough that Switch is starting to be considered “make or break” for the company.

  • InaneDragon

70m loss on a project to a company making 700b is a statistical drop in the well.

Quick question… how do you think it’s going to place with other handheld consoles? Lower end: PSVita
    Middle: Nvidia Shield Handheld
    Higher End: Razer Edge.
I’m thinking maybe somewhere around Nvidia Shield.

  • MadokaXHomura

    Thats why you’re a pleb.

  • Buddydudeguy

wot? lol. The potatostation is not on the same level as PC. You are the pleb sir 🙁

  • Chaltab

Well that’s not really what I meant or even that apt a comparison, this is a whole different level than 3DS.

I just mean on a marketing level, this isn’t being presented as a next gen system as much as it is a do-over for Nintendo because the Wii U didn’t work out.

  • Zachary M Schultz

Leave Nintendo alone they had to get out of their relationship with IBM they used the same chipset since 2000. Over clocked on the Wii. And Ds and 3ds was just ARM

  • tazbo28

    NINTENDAH POWAHHH!

Nintendo not doing console would be a favor??? That’s bullshit!
Every Nintendo console have something unique, creative and fun… PS and xBox are only regular console… Which lag by the way… My underpowered Wii U doesn’t lag…
I’ll probably sell my PS4 for that Nintendo Switch!!! Nintendo doesn’t only make the best quality in software… They make the best hardware as well!

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

    @Kevin Tapp Minville:
I have no idea who you wanted to reply to but it wasn’t me.

  • Cesar Caestus

Squenix for a KH 3 Switch and some FF. Nintendo is good with JRPGs.

  • Gilbert Nicks

Never had issues Testing a Surface book… I was playing some games and would switch in and out to try to crash it… Never did anything other than the screen flashed for a sec and you see a performance hit while it adjust… and then again when plugged back in.. If MS could figure it out with a laptop tablet design… I don’t see how they cant… Also we have a connector that is fast enough to allow you to hook up multiple 4k displays supply power to the device and run a high end graphics card… its called Thunderbolt 3.0 (USB C) They would just need to build the game/engines to support 2 modes and the console would need a flag system to tell the game what mode its in.

  • http://orbisaetherum.com Carlos

Sounds like nvidia put a lot of work into the Switch.

  • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=NotSoBright Jecht_Sin

With “crazy fast” you mean that for once your Android device doesn’t lag? The Nvidia Shield tablet has more or less the raw power of a PS3. Around 300 GFLOPS. The Nintendo Switch is supposed to be well above that since the Tegra X1 starts at 500GFLOPS. 750GFLOPS for the Tegra X2.

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

    A thousands excuses!
    I wanted to answer InaneDragon!

Equity DOES NOT EQUAL cash reserve (even by equity the two comp. are about equal). The thing is, Sony is head first buried in debt, that’s equal or exceeding any cash or cash equivalents they can liquidate on a short notice. Nintendo on the other hand has never been in debt and has a vault of cash in reserve. I have no stakes at either and I am a PC gamer first.

  • Thomas

No, just stop. It’s not the same. Go buy a Chinese phone that has over 9000 times the performance but breaks in two days…

  • theplotlessplot

Could you give any details on the actual chip that’s powering the Switch? The (supposedly) leaked devkit specs point to Tegra X1, but could you confirm if it’s indeed the X1, the X2, or a custom chip? Is the GPU using Maxwell of Pascal architecture? You say “NVIDIA gaming technology is integrated into all aspects of the new Nintendo Switch”, which might lead some to guess that there’s also some Nvidia hardware in the dock (it sure is bulky enough to contain a small eGPU). Any comments? 😛

  • Kokusho

    THE DREAM IS REAL !
Nvidia great tech combined with Nintendo great content
    The Dream !

  • Bleki

Master race = PC + Nintendo Switch + PlayStation Now LOOOOOOL

  • Albertus Magnus

i wonder how powerful this is..

  • ShadyKnights

Well neither issue for the Wii U is really the problem. The problem is the AAA third parties didn’t uphold their promise to Nintendo and Wii U consumers potential and current. That and other devs back talking the console for petty reasons. Devs can make games for any platform with effort. Effort just needs to be applied is all. And I believe I read it was comparative to the 360 to develop for so calling t a nightmare is a bit of a stretch considering how many games were tossed on that console.

  • ShadyKnights

1080p is more than adequate. Stability and flow is more important than resolution, let alone resolution that a small and barely growing percent of TV owners has.

  • MadokaXHomura

Well neither is Switch, but thats not the point. The point is you are pleb because you cant affored it(which is literely the only reason people hate on etc.consoles, otherwise what gamer would actually not buy it for games?). And Ps4 has good games,GAMES,exclusives ever heard of it?

  • Matt

But your just obsessed with hoping its based off X1 when it will be totally custom 500 man years of engineering means serious optimised hardware with the latest Nvidia technology end of,people thinking the Switch has a X1 in it are just Sony fanboys hoping that so they can slam it with it’s not powerful enough ect come on there wouldn’t be that many publishers on board if it wasn’t cutting edge Nvidia tech inside end of….

  • Matt

Get a grip Nvidia are saying in not so many words the Switch has cutting edge tech inside 500 man years of engineering means seriously optimised hardware and based off the latest line of geforce graphics means just that.

  • Matt

He has zero facts because he is just speculating listen to what Nvidia are saying it’s based off the latest geforce graphics cards….simple.

  • Matt

No they don’t boy,Nintendo in 3 years will be worth so much money they will be able to buy Sony and Microsoft,Nintendo with there mobile venture will make billions and billions year in year out…..plus Nintendo have more assets then Sony all day long..Sony are in the red mate.

  • Matt

Cloud cukoo land mate Sony do not make 700billion…

  • Matt

So there saying it has graphics based off the most powerful on the market,ps4 gpu was old when it came out 2 years old…..

  • Grant Brewington

it will be awesome end of story i dont need tech specs to tell me ive wanted a non ds portable console from nintendo that can tdo portable with skyrim !

  • TheBuzzSaw

    Will NVN include Vulkan support?

  • akaDv8R

You fool. You got it round the wrong way. As of June this year, after selling off most of their shares in an American football team, Nintendo has approx. 22.8 billion dollars in reserve, earning over 300,000,000 dollars a day in interest. Sony had to close down 2 office buildings (with the loss of over 800 people), sold off its computer division, shut down all its Sony Centres and sold off a third of its music industry, just to get enough money together to bring the PS4 to the market.

  • Seth Rogaine

looks very interesting. on the Tegra.. dev kits from nintendo are using the Tegra X1. This does not appear to be the X2 as developing on an X1 would certainly have incompatibilities if consumer models had X2s in them. , Rather it likely is a redesigned X1 with a beefier gpu including more cuda cores than the one in the Shield. I guess we will see in the future when nintendo releases actual specs.

  • Seth Rogaine

well, they make the most unique hardware… they have never been a power based company, but rather rely on older, less expensive technology in their products so that they can sell at a profit. they rely on the strength of their first party games. the best combo imho would be a ps4 and a switch 😉

  • TessellatedGuy

“OS speed is something completely different from game quality”
Yeah due to that reason my shield tablet can play many PC games natively from the tablet storage.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about. Pixel count is only one of the factors of picture quality.”
You have no idea what the context even is. The guy said “Better display” and I replied with facts about a higher res display. The shield tablet has a simply better display.

  • TessellatedGuy

You must be fun at parties.
Did I say anything about the switch? I was just correcting you for your dumb statements. I’m not against the switch.

  • TessellatedGuy

Everywhere I’ve read it says it’s a 720p display. So don’t get your hopes up. Also “900p” isn’t “confirmed” that’s also another rumor.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

Just admit you’re wrong and be done with it.
He claimed the Shield was effectively the same thing – I told him it wasn’t including also likely being slower.
You claimed that wasn’t true and that your shield was crazy fast even today which in no way is any evidence whatsoever against my claim that it’s likely slower than the Nintendo Switch. You did say something about the Switch when you made the claim that my claim that the Shield was likely slower than the Switch wasn’t true – that was 100% about the Switch.
You’re dumb. You effectively claim that the Switch can’t be faster because your Shield is fast. Your logic is broken. Maybe you shouldn’t make lose false claims if you can’t live with people pointing out you’re wrong.

  • Andrew Sandstrom

How old are you? 12? The only systems nintendo has had under-powered were the wii and wii u. The Wii U’s leaked specs pushed sony/microsoft’s current specs to try and squash that competition before it could start.

Nintendo had a more powerful console than sony that was also easier to develop for with the gamecube, but you can see how well that strategy paid off lol. They lost to the PS2 with its “plays DVDs” gimmick.

  • Andrew Sandstrom

Has Nvidia even been confirmed to be inside the NS? I’m pretty certain this has just been a rumor.

  • Buddydudeguy

“can’t afford it”? wtf are you on about? rofl I have a PS4 in my house. It’s literally for my youngest daughter. My PC blows it out of the sky. The PS4 has the Last of US…big woop. Are you for real? Can’t afford it he says lol this kid.

You honestly think people who prefer PC hate on PS4 cuz they ” can’t afford it”? are you that stupid?

  • http://juanrga.com juanrga

    Parker or Xavier?

  • Phoenix Gravestone

The wii u list had maybe 10 3rd party groups on board

  • MadokaXHomura

Your whole stupid topic is this “And a PC blows away the Potatostation. Are there Nintendo games on Potatostation? no.”.Now are there any PS exclusive on Nintendo or PC?No.But you seem so fixated on the Ps4 aka your so called Potatostation.Cleary you dont have ps4.Lmao what a Pleb.

  • http://urban-man.com Frank Moolah

    Ninty deserves a cookie

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

I haven’t said the most powerfull hardware, but the best! In term of quality and reliability.
And i totaly agree with your combo! Even though, i’m extremely disapointed with the PS4 library! If i knew i would have bought a PS3!

  • PUNKem733

So what? They had a list of developers as long for the gamecube all the way to the Wii U, and we all know how that turned out.

  • Graham Banzer

of course there’s no pre-orders yet. theres not even a price or specific date of release been revealed yet. Pre-ordering will be available when release date is revealed.

  • Mark Norville

Well that explains why there are no nvida shields. You are using all the chips, factories and materials for Nintendo. Good for you but bad for your potential customers who want a shield.

  • Phoenix Gravestone

No they didn’t go fact check before you comment

  • ferrero

the thing is, nintendo is gonna have an efficient operating system, not that java based crap that eats half the hardware on nothing! bad really bad 20 century ram managment, you cant even get the idea of what the hardware potential is with that OS, its so sh***y, so fu***ng sh***y , nintendo is gonna have a good OS for gaming and a new api, probably this api will have vulkan support and so yeah, open platform great but unfortunately is not good at anything because is based of freaking JAVA 2016 pls its not even a joke , doesn’t interact with the hardware as a modern OS like windows does, its complete garbage, and yes nintendo is going to have this much more modern operating system

  • ferrero

best combo is PC and switch

  • Sean

Switch should have GameStream. The stream-from-pc is going mainstream now

You are forgetting the price of the surface book. In a lot of cases the main reason why something cannot be done is that its simply too expensive.

Adding the facility for a SoC to support thunderbolt 3.0 would add considerable cost they can otherwise avoid as it adds nothing particularly useful compared to just clockup up the SoC when docked, where power is no longer an issue. The huge vents on the top make it pretty clear this is exactly what they have done.

  • Bili

    “TEGRA”

  • Gizmo

Lucky, some of us haven’t even heard the Switch speakers in action directly…
    Lol

  • https://twitter.com/VoiceActorJunki I Love Edward Elric!

I understand what you mean Matt, but I’m trying to get an estimate for price. It could be around 350 to 400 dollars. I just wanted a second opinion.

  • Fuega!

    WOAH?!

  • Gizmo

Given the fact that we all know it’s TEGRA based, why is it so important to keep the custom aspects a secret? Even if it’s a custom built X1 variant, what’s so important about protecting that fact?

There’s an internet of people speculating whether the custom chip is Maxwell based or Pascal/ Parker based, 20nm vs 16nm etc etc.
Again, we all know that it’s obviously one or the other. Why not just confirm which flavour this custom chip is based on.

Personally I think the 16nm fab has much more going for it with this form factor. But, a custom X1 could be interestingly potent depending on the specifics of those hardware customisation’s and how it’s cooled. Would Nintendo have asked for 16nm to that design when an existing design already is in production at that die size? Nope. That’s not cost effective at all and makes no sense.

Nintendo are unfortunately far too protective of their image and are hand tied on this relevant aspect of the reveal process due to insistence on gameplay first philosophy. That isn’t to say gameplay first is a failed marketing angle to take, but saying nothing substantial about tech is antithetical to the pre-release process in today’s connected environment.

Switch looks great either way. But, having basic tech specs confirmed isn’t the devil. Poor Nvidia. That 500 man years of customisation is a marketing stream of articles with major gaming outlets waiting to happen. All good things for the hype of Switch before March. Wasted opportunity.

You’re not in the arms race by promoting the tech behind your products. Lol

  • Buddydudeguy

You are misusing the word “pleb” out of context genius…. blocked, you’re boring.

  • Gizmo

Yes exactly. It’s an attractive match up. I’m actually surprised it happened. Pleasantly…

  • Gizmo

Neither did the target market or Wii U consumer adopt those experiences. In most cases porting was an issue for quality or parity with features and services. But, in cases where porting was actually very good – sales were still underwhelming.

Switch just needs that consistent message and active marketing from Nintendo to maintain interest, which in turn will relate to consistent sales. Having one development for games means software releases should theoretically be more frequent as well.

  • aaronlink127

It would be cool if this supported NVIDIA Gamestream like the SHIELD devices. Of course, it probably will not, but it’s still something im hoping for.

  • Jacob

It’s nice to see Nintendo using Nvidia technology, but I heard the Tegra is weaker than the processors used in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Is this true? I hope not.

  • ShadyKnights

Well pricing has a lot to do with the audiences not buying into a lot of those games. Granted, yes, sales were underwhelming for those good ports, but Deus Ex released on the Wii U for $60 when other platforms had it at a fraction of the price. Or when the Wii U got only Mass Effect 3 at full price, while the Trilogy was released on the other consoles at the same time. I am also curious as to the underwhelming sales considering the parroted statement that the Wii U didn’t sell well itself, so I do wonder what counts as underwhelming sales when the console itself isn’t selling that fast.

Either way however, Nintendo has had people on the edge of their seat for the better part of 2 year with two letters and an vague idea. I think they have the attention area covered. We don’t really know if they’re merging their 3DS and Wii U development into just Switch game development. So while theoretically that may be true, it’s also a little premature to assume as much.

All it really needs is just to come up with the goods and for people to stop with the knee jerk negativity that the gaming industry seems to default into these days and just enjoy games without slamming games they don’t like or aren’t interested in. If we’ve finally moved past that muck started last gen, I think the Switch will be just fine.

  • Gemmol Lewis

if you read the article, it says ” Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.”

    lets look at key words

Custom Tegra Processor – this word alone tell you everything your sony and xbox friends said is not true, since no one is currently using this custom processor, there is no way to know how powerful it is. They will prefer to tell you and other people online it is weaker because Sony and Xbox fans know this system have a lot of potential to really take the world by storm and they do not want that to happen, so any words to make you have doubts is what they would do. If you do not believe me, look at every gaming website, Sony and Xbox fans are working double time to get people to doubt the new handheld.

lets look at another key word

The High Efficiency scalable processor includes an Nvidia GPU based on SAME ARCHITECTURE AS THE WORLD’S TOP PERFORMING GeForce GAMING GRAPHICS CARDS – lets look at these words……it say this new custom tegra processor is scalable this is stuff the old Tegra that your friends talk about did not have………..they also said it is based on Same architecture as the world top performing GeForce gaming graphics cards…….this part alone tell you this graphic card is not the one your friends talking about because it is based on their best desktop graphic card that it out now, meaning their current card……..and the tegra your friends is talking about is a older card that do not have the architecture of Nvidia newer graphic cards……….so that one line alone tell you your friends are wrong…….let them read this article if they confuse

  • Gemmol Lewis

is maxwell based on same architecture as their top performing geforce series???

  • Gemmol Lewis

you missed the words that also say it is custom and that it is built on same architecture as the one in their top performing geforce series aka the ones in the desktop

  • Gemmol Lewis

which one do their strongest card for ge force series use

  • Gemmol Lewis

its confirm in this article from Nvidia, what other confirmation do you want, Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.

  • Gemmol Lewis

how would it appear not to be the X2, do the article say that or people assumption……..here are some keywords people often overlook from this article………NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards………now look at their top of line Geforce desktop graphics and look to see what architecture it use, once you figure that out you one step closer to figuring things out, instead of just making assumption on x1

  • Gemmol Lewis

NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards………so yep, it seems to be based of those recent beasts Nvidia put out this year

  • Gemmol Lewis

lets look at what they wrote

NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.

lets take a look at their top of the line GPU that came out this year for desktop so we can see what architecture it use, then we can make some assumptions

  • Gizmo

Unfortunately “some” of their best performing GPU’s are in fact still Maxwell, so very ambiguous statement really.

Although, I personally believe it to be Pascal based. Just because an entire line of Pascal GPU’s have indeed succeeded Maxwell already and as a series provides a line up of “top performing” geforce GPU’s.

Again, without concrete specifics here from either Nintendo or Nvidia, we are still left speculating which of the two it is. No matter how logical our opinions may seem.

  • Gemmol Lewis

is the one with pascal their strongest,

  • Gizmo

Are you talking about one or a line or series of?
I don’t think Nvidia ever said “the” top performing geforce gpu.
    Lol

Again, I personally think it’s more logical to “assume” pascal, but that isn’t the same thing as knowing it is. Neither is assuming it is confirmation of correct interpretation of Nividia’s statement.

  • Gemmol Lewis

they put top performing, world’s top performing in any other sentence would be number 1 in whatever it is, if I was to say Jimmy is the world top performing runner it would mean out of all runners he would be number one runner all across the world…….so this GPU have same architecture as their top of line number 1 gpu……..on their website it is the Titan X which is based off Pascal so it is pascal

  • Gizmo

Sorry that’s not what they said exactly. And it’s all in the s unfortunately. lol.

You can’t just go around making statements fit your narrative by changing the context of those statements.

Again, I also “assume” it’s likely to be Pascal. But again, that’s not the same as knowing it is.

For perspective, this is what was actually said.

Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.

Pascal is more than likely imo. But, this statement does not provide confirmation in any way.

  • Gemmol Lewis

what narrative I change……look at it…..NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce………which is the number one GeForce on their page its the Titan X, under that it is the 1080……and all of them use Pascal…….so the architecture is Pascal……which part confuse you

  • Logan Hollis

Ah, okay. It kinda threw me off there. So are we looking at an ARM architecture or could this be Kepler?

  • Gizmo

    See quotation above. Lol

Read my posts again and ask yourself, do I seem confused to you?
Relax, you believe it’s conclusively Pascal and that’s fine. It was obvious from your first reply.

I’m saying the statement is not conclusive and without specifics from Nvidia we can only go on what seems like the logical answer which to me is Pascal.

Still, this is not the same as “knowing it is”

Are you confused on the concept of “knowing”…??

    Knowing, Assuming, Wanting and Hoping.
I think you’re three for four here buddy.

  • Gemmol Lewis

I am only talking about the architecture, I am not speaking on custom power of tegra, information about that is not listed. Now, the architecture on the other hand is listed, there are no tricky words behind it…..let me ask you this question, is the Maxwell Titan X better than Pascal Titan X????? if your answer is no, then why would anything Maxwell related be world top performing…….I feel like everything written by Nvidia is easy to understand, world top performing card is Titan X with pascal, so it is only common sense the architecture is pascal……remember not talking about tegra custom power level, just the architecture……..so i repeat, which would be the top performing, Maxwell Titan X or Pascal Titan X?????

  • Gizmo

Without absolute confirmation you’re still left assuming, no matter how logical that assumption seems.
Titan X and Titan X (Pascal) are both top performing “cards”. The architecture in either could be sufficient to the statement made by Nvidia.

Again, I think it’s most likely Pascal. But, it might not be just as easily. So I ask you again Lol, do you know what “cards” mean? If so, why are you asking for a comparison to “one card”…?

See where your assumption is not the same is confirmation? No matter how logical. The comment may “point to” but it does not “confirm outright”. Therefore it is still unknown.

  • Gemmol Lewis

aight, we will leave it alone for now, but the system do look cool, Japan will eat it up with their love for handheld more lately

  • Gizmo

Well, we certainly agree there. When I was in Japan recently I was surprised at how many execs 45-55 were out on their travels; cafe’s, subway etc playing 3DS. Surreal…

  • Gizmo

Mushrooms don’t talk where you come from? Maan, that’s unfortunate…

  • Gemmol Lewis

I agree with you even though I never been there, only because I see japan sales every week. I already know they will be all over the Nintendo Switch……people do not believe me but I think the Nintendo switch will steal a franchise from the consoles, look at dragon quest, once Square Enix seen the sales on the DS, I already knew Dragon Quest was gone, then they bring it to the 3ds, which also gave them millions of sales again, so it only confirm to me it was gone from Consoles. Although it is coming to PS4 I think it was before they knew about the Nintendo Switch, when they started getting information and talked about the NX, they announce Dragon Quest 11 early, when they were not suppose to, so they deny it, and then later confirm it since they already messed up and announced it earlier. This another sign it left consoles, when Square still making a dragon quest 11 for the 3ds even though it cannot handle ps4 and Switch graphics, so they making a different version of the game. They could of just save their money and put it towards the ps4 version but no, they needed to have a handheld version out there. I do not blame them because Japan is all handheld, it would make no sense in the future to keep making their games for consoles, when most sales come from nintendo handheld, same as what capcom doing with Monster hunter, they do not want to lose those sales so they keep it on Nintendo handheld. These are the games the consoles will lose, this just my opinion, Final Fantasy, and Tales series. Tales do not sell that good on ps4, but they kept making it because of the graphics, they wanted their game to look decent at least, and with Nintendo new handheld if the first game they bring have good sales, say good bye to future ps4 versions, they will probably make 2 more ps4 versions but after that it be wrap, and the reason I say final fantasy because Square already testing the 3ds, look at bravely default, final fantasy explorers, they been testing the market and its been selling, and there was a rumor already, that Square plans to port Final Fantasy XV and final fantasy 7 remake to Nintendo new handheld. Before this rumor even came out, I knew it would happen, just need to wait to see if the rumor true. Sony fans will be upset, but these companies want to make money, if ps4 version sell only 500,000 it wont be enough, and they know with all the development cost, they probably can make some of the money back on Nintendo new handheld.

  • TDude73

10 out of 10! I’m DEFINITELY gonna buy the Nintendo Switch!

  • Adam Campbell

The Shield tablet outperforms the PS3 and is about on par with the WiiU in raw flops. The architecture is superior to either though.

  • MadokaXHomura

Lol couldn’t come up with argument huh.

  • Gizmo

Japanese RPG’s belong on Switch. That’s just the beginning and end of that conversation…

Hopefully its region free like speculated so we can all partake in that regardless of localisation or not.

  • Michele Gurrado

I don’t expect more power from nintendo: even with wii u the first rumors speaked about a much more powered console than the one they are actually selling.

  • Michele Gurrado

Interesting, i didn’t know the Razer Edge. Watching it on razer’s site i noticed that it has similar vents as switch. Using vents means high power to dissipate becouse high raw power or low efficiency. I hope for the first case.

  • Steven Schwartz Palevoda

    potatostation kkkkkkkkkk

  • BionicSonicGravity

Yea because an opinion used as a selling point should be taken as fact. Time will tell. People aren’t skeptical because of some grand conspiracy, people are skeptical because Nintendo has failed to please its fans recently.

  • Matt

It will be between £299 and £350 in the UK….depending on wether you get a few extra dongles ie new classic pro ect…

  • Diego Ivan Esti.

    Sold…!!!!! Day one

  • Matt

Yes and the X1 chip only got ports not games built ground up so we didn’t even see the true potential of X1 and I’m guessing Switch custom chip will be based on pascal and denver and with a custom built API and Physics engine ect ect it sounds like the Switch wont be bottlenecked by cpu like ps4 is…

  • Matt

Yep based on Tegra X2 easy…

  • Matt

Parker is 2 X2 chips and runs at 8 terraflops…

  • Matt

Ps4 pro is bottlenecked just like ps4 base by its cpu why do you think games struggle to hit 60fps….

  • Matt

Your right Nintendo said its a Home Console 1st…

  • Matt

Stop dreaming mate try between 2 teraflops and 4 teraflops the X2 runs anything between 2.2 and 4 teraflops, parker is 2 X2 chips and produces 8 teraflops….

  • Matt

Wrong its between 2.2 and 4 teraflops mate just checked…

  • Matt
  • Matt

The bog N are into power if there going bk to their roots mate…

  • Matt

Nvidia chips are 40% more efficient so work it out basically you could have something that is 60% the power of ps4 and it would perform equal…

  • Jose Diaz

Kepler is a gpu architecture. They are hinting either Maxwell or Pascal. The CPU’s architecture will be ARM, regardless of what the gpu might be.

  • Jonathan Twyman

LoLoLoLoL. No they don’t…. They are using Nvidia’s hardware BECAUSE they don’t make good hardware anymore. They dont lag? They dont lag because the games arent that demanding. The games that do lag on ps4 and xboxone are usually just poorly optimized and are fixed. I havent bought a Nintendo console since the wii. Hardly touched it because it was crap. No interest in the wii u. I am 100% going to buy switch because they are actually using decent hardware and have a decent design. I only hope that they will allow nvidia to implement their gamestream tech somehow.

  • http://www.fuckyouathorseshit.com Rebdoomer

    Specs?

  • shadowhedgehogz

It really needs raw power better than Xbox One though for best support.. that will be disappointing if its not even as powerful as that. I’d rather the system be a bit more expensive and more powerful tbh.

  • shadowhedgehogz

I want this system, but i have to say if it’s not even more powerful than the Xbox One they can kiss goodbye to much third party support, again.

  • TessellatedGuy

TL:DR, you got triggered because I corrected you. Again, you must be fun at parties. Or not, because you call people dumb because they don’t agree with you.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

It will unlikely be slower than a by now multiple years(?) old Tegra chip.

  • Mark Burley

OK now it costs 350 smackeroos buddy features beyond rx480 some gpgpu will take up slack. Twin 16bit takes it to 8.4 tflops extra gig of gddr3 sata 3 very effective 2k upscaling all sorts of hardware tricks smarter not brute force and again I say 350 fiat zen would of been nice but compatibility had to be perfect.

  • harkeness

FWIW, the people that got pretty much everything right about the nx before the reveal are saying pascal, so I’d say it’s very likely it is pascal.

  • darionnexus

I know but im thinking day of we coulda got something but nooooo big N goin ham… No mo info til 2017… Damn….

  • Chaltab

And make the system cost $600? You’re the one dreaming man.

  • Johan Krüger Haglert

Don’t worry about the parties. You’re wrong and I’m right and whatever I’m fun or boring at parties doesn’t change that whatsoever.

  • Mongoloid_DNA

I’m more impressed that it only took them 500 man/years to hit production configuration.

“My rumor is better than your rumor”, we don’t know anything. Heck, it could be a 240p display or a 9001k display.

Those are part of the story.

I mean the story is pretty good and emotional sometimes ( like twilight princess ) and I enjoyed it but there are tons of RPGs out there that has a much deeper story which makes the story in Zelda pretty simple when compared

  • PreyMantis

Why does that matter if it looks good? None of the consoles will ever beat the PC, anyway.

  • PreyMantis

Given the fact that we all know it’s TEGRA based, why is it so important
to keep the custom aspects a secret? Even if it’s a custom built X1
variant, what’s so important about protecting that fact?

    Simple: NDA.

  • PreyMantis

Oh, wow, you’re something else. NVIDIA posted the confirmation themselves on their own website, and you’re still doubting it? You must be special.

  • Jonathan Twyman

I don’t claim to know if they made their own chips or not. I am just saying that nintendo has basically been “gimmick hardware” since the wii came out. I purchased the wii, played one game on it, and never touched it again. Also…. no… xbox and ps DO use AMD. AMD is majorly underpowered and also cheap. They did not “win” in the “console war” because they were superior. They “won” because they are simply cheaper. Thy had a lower bid and got the contracts… nothing more.

  • Gizmo

    Simple: NDA.

NDA is the contract which dictates what is and what isn’t, what can be shared what can’t etc etc.

Your attempt at being intelligent doesn’t address the question it only makes you look like a wannabe.

Why is it important to keep it a secret?
Not, what is keeping it a secret. LOL

  • Mario Pallino

Come on, this make no sense, you can’t compare a powerful Android tablet with a real gaming console, with all the proper console version of games which won’t arrive on Android, especially the Nintendo’s one, and with the gimmick of those controllers which can be used in different ways, and of course the dock that easily turns it into a home console

  • Gizmo

What about next generation? Who’s popular then?
What if Switch sells? Will it be popular?

I think if Switch fails to catch on after launch then Nintendo might just consider making software only. I’m not sure if they would even really have much choice. You can have a mountain of money, but if people think you’re just going to burn it all over again, well, they won’t be investing in your products or your business. Faith lost.

Having said all that, you’re way too premature on the software only vibe man. Switch releases in under 6 months. It just makes you sound like one of those “popular console” fanboys on damage control. Lololol.

  • Rogerio de Andrade

    Take your own advice.

  • Rogerio de Andrade

Take your own advice, little baby.

  • Gizmo

The Wii U’s leaked specs pushed sony/microsoft’s current specs to try and squash that competition before it could start.

This is a fact. It actually happened exactly like that.

But here’s the thing. Now is not then. PS4 Pro and Scorpion aren’t portables. If MS wanted they could revise the Surface brand and ad on some controller option. Sony could revive the Vita to something similar. All without knowing a single thing about what’s in the Switch. Now it’s concept is revealed.

Nintendo held it close to their chest and did a great job at that. Now though, it affects nothing to disclose basic specifications about their system. Nintendo has to learn to steer the discussion. Don’t jump off the dance floor altogether cause you fell over one time and every one laughed. They let the speculations run wild after Wii U released again, when it was already damage done. And, all that negative speculation amplified the bad vibes towards their console product.

If they go the same way again now… Same thing probably.

  • Charlton Christian

Anything can be considered a gimmick. Analog sticks, dpads, force feedback, vr, etc

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/8296/the-nvidia-shield-tablet-review/8
Even if it wasn’t that way the Quantum dot and then the OLED screens looks even nicer.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Since it’s custom, it could be a switchable Parker? Underclocked 1-chip on the go, full-clocked 2-chip config docked?

    No idea.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Still don’t know. The thing looks awesome, and the second my Wii U craps out on me I’ll be getting a Switch. And even if it’s a vanilla X1, the thing could still run the new DOOM at 1080p/60fps smoothly, and that’s more than enough to get the support it needs. I’m guessing it’ll be more powerful than a plain X1.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Devs working on Breath of the Wild claim that the game looks a whole lot better on Switch than on Wii U. Given this, it seems more likely it’d be on the high end of that scale.

  • Shankovich

They said leading chips, which implies Pascal, which implies modded X2. Gotta read between the lines on these things man.

  • Shankovich

Wording in this blog implies Pascal CUDA cores, and they said custom chip, which means modded tegra X2.

  • Shankovich

This post implies Pascal anyways (“leading chips”).

  • Shankovich

The words “leading chips” implies Pascal CUDA cores, so Switch will have a modded tegra X2.

  • Shankovich

As Gemmol said, this blog very clearly implies Switch will use Pascal CUDA cores, but in a modded form. So the NX is pretty much getting a tegra X2. That should place the Switch in XB1 territory.

  • Shankovich

As the blog post implies, they’ll be Pascal CUDA cores. X2 will use 256, and given the gains we’ll see over the X1, it’ll be very close to XB1 territory when docked. But it’s a custom chip with custom API, so it’s hard to tell right now.

  • Shankovich

Article says top GeForce chips = Pascal. Means it’ll be moddedX2, puts Switch in XB1 territory

  • Victor

LOL yeah but you have to wait 10mins when you click on any menu XD I have all current gen consoles and sorry but the WiiU is utter poop. Even stuff like loading the WiiU store takes for ever XD and that’s with 200/30 internet connection XD. Once it’s opened and IF you stay on the main page just to boot a game to switch between the Mii view and game view. Sure its lag free! XD I do enjoy Nintendo games, don’t get me wrong, but the WiiU is by far the worst piece of trash ever made XD I am really hyped for this Nvidia offering and maybe finally having a good Nintendo console (since Wii and WiiU were really poop)

  • Graham Banzer

they’re just notifications that the console has been announced. Pre-orders haven’t actually started yet. In fact if you head to the Gamestop website, the only option you have is to join a mailing list for updates on new information as soon as it’s made available.

So yeah, my original comment remains true. No pre-ordering yet because a date/price hasn’t been announced yet, and neither has what you’ll get in the box with the console itself. If pre-orders were available, it would be speculative promises, and would result in lawsuits from the store not keeping to their promise. Either that or the shop would have to provide everything they offered, potentially losing millions because of it.

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

The loadings on the PS4 are even worst, and it’s incredibly laggy and unstable…
    Your not impartial, it shows…

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Seems Wiik. No specs, means another Wii/Wii U disaster. Nintendo seems to refuse to simply make a strong system…

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Clearly the public loves ‘regular’ but powerful consoles, not toys.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

True, but the GC was designed like the N64 to the Switch – to look like kid toys, that is why it played mini DVD’s instead of full-sized DVD’s. BECAUSE of that, the ONLY reason why the GC edged PS2 graphics was because it had HARDWARE texture compression/decompression to make up for the lack of storage space, while the PS2 had software texture compression/decompression, which was slow and with dirtier results on-screen.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

AMD is not under powered, they are strong and have excellent visual quality. Nvidia has faster speeds, lower RAM amounts and lower visual quality. AMD has the visual quality over raw speed. I know, because I rocked Nvidia for ten years, then switched to AMD. Once I saw their video and texture quality, it has been hard for me to want to switch back.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Where does it say that it is based off Pascal?

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

I would not say it is on par with those, but only on par with a shell, not the egg yolk…

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Well, if Nintendo does not reveal specs again, then we will have to assume the worst.

  • Jonathan Twyman

Dunno man, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9QhOOGm_2k Visuals look pretty stunning to me. Pretty sure it seems like the nvidia side can also see a bit further out with more detail 😛 Not that its that big of a difference in visual fidelity.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

BS! The nature of the Switch alone shows that it’s GPU cannot even be as good as the PS4’s. Stop the madness.

  • Grez

Only a preview, not a full reveal.

  • Matthew Ducriss

Then explain the original wii? It outsold both the ps3 and xobox 360 but double. so obviously most people care about the games. Not hardware.

P.s. didn’t you guys read this article? Nvidialiterally said that this system’s hardware is so powerful, it’s using the same chips that the world leading gaming machines uses. So not only is this system doing what Nintendo loves to do, but it’s also bringing powerful hardware back!

Can i get a “now you’re playing with power!” Please? 🙂

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

The Wii was a novelty item, which is why it’s success was not repeated with the similarly named “Wii U.” The Wii had no games and most played the pack-in, then it was abandoned by all but little kids.

As far as the article goes, I must have clearly missed the line you gave! It cannot use the same chips because the other two use AMD chips. So, far, only portable power seems to be the case. The design shows that portability is the main thing, not home console use, despite what Nintendo said.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

They both look good, despite the AMD have half the RAM speed…

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

    Toys… Like you know what you’re saying… You’re just close minded… You must have a xBox…

  • Nintendo Forever
  • Matt

Listen the specs on X2 are from 2.2 to 4 teraflops end of….they use 2 powerful X2 chips for driveless cars and they produce 8 teraflops….ps4 is not powerful in terms of cpu power and this makes them teraflops worthless look at Watchdogs ect poor framerates on moderate graphics why because cpu power is what makes framerates good…..

  • deucezulu22

From the NES to GameCube, Nintendo was quite the power base.

  • Gabe Hoffman

I have heard that one developer is actually moving their PS4 game over to Switch so that means NX could be in the same ballpark as PS4 at the least

  • Nuruddin Peters

Nintendo doesn’t manufacturer the processors or pcb’s, ever, that we know of. They patent their *designs* and create their IP’s from the ground-up within the company… That’s it.

Nintendo is a publisher 1, and 2nd, a software development company. Not a chip manufacturer…

I recall after breaking some of my old Nintendo hardware back in the days, I could have sworn a lot of the early ‘chips’ and circuitry were tightly manufactured by NEC [also, my first computer in 1998.]

  • Nubsauce

In all honesty Tessell, when you said you said nothing about the switch, you do realize you’re on a post about the switch right? So why are you bringing a useless argument with your shield being better or w/e? The shield wont be better, know why? Because they have horrible battery life, there has been a new GPU version that will be on the switch and not the shield, and it plays Nintendo games and not just android games….so yes, the switch will be better than your precious shield. But before you say “I never said anything about the switch”, keep in mind, you’re on a switch post…

  • stephendeo

    Tegra X2 aka Custom-designed chip…

  • Matt

Sorry mate but that link does not say nothing about X2 the only X1….look up parker that uses 2 X2 chips and work it out….

  • Matt

I’ll just say this the new X2 chip runs between 2.2 and 4 teraflops but uses a much better cpu then ps4 pro…..

  • Matt

That is what Nintendo mean when they say we haven’t shown everything yet,on the left side of the dock there are usb sockets for the supplemental device….

  • Matt

Wrong your looking at the tegra 2 ? X2 INFO NOT ON Wikipedia yet…

  • Matt

I’m dreaming listen the Switch will use a custom chip with about 2 teraflops wait and see if I’m right…

  • Joey Graham

Why would Microsoft need to change the Surface, Gears of War 4 plays absolutely incredible on my Lenovo Yoga…. i7 powered mini monster

  • Matt

With then huge vents on the side…

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Why do I have to be open minded about not wanting a toy to play video games on? We are now at the point where they are basically PC’s. Nintendo stays behind the times.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Cars have more power and basically no restrictions. Nintendo is not known for power AND they won’t even release the specs of the system and we are not even sure which Tegra chip is in this thing. For it to have ANY chance, there will have to be on in the portable and one in the base, when combined, makes for a system people can work with, even though it still looks more like a portable than a home system. Somehow, I doubt Nintendo learned their lessons.

We all know or should have known that the PS4/X1 are CPU weak. That was done to save power and to cut down on costs. I always said, if you put 8GB RAM on the Ps3/Xbox 360, they would be faster than the current, just without a lot of the later graphical features. Watch Dogs is not a good game to point out power or lack of it. GTA V is…

  • Boderick

No, because it’s based off of mobile architecture, which is what they don’t tell you on their website (what’s that, a company not giving you all the info on their own product!?). It’s like making a model car and saying “Just as powerful, it’s based off of the same architecutre as it’s big brother!!!”. Except you know it’s not, cause one is a real car and another is a model. This is the point. It is physically impossible to pump out the graphics needed to compete with the xbone or ps4 with the size of the unit without it costing much MUCH more than 300 dollars.

  • Gilbertify

It’s a goddamn handheld dude lol. They can push more out of the specs than a full blown console.

  • Gilbertify

    It’s a handheld you dumbshit.

  • Victor

Don’t know what kind of PS4 you have but mine is way faster than my WiiU. Popping out of game, going on the web, playing Spotify with the new update all of this is almost seamless. On the WiiU tapping home will take it a good few seconds to go to home and then let’s say I want to go look at pending downloads ill have to wait some more and more… Just try it. Like I said once in a menu it’s all smooth and pretty but getting there is a pain compared to PS4 or even Xbox1. Nintendo makes great games but their hardware has been bad compared to competition ever since the Wii. They have poor hardware and try to do similar things a much stronger competitor does. For sure it won’t perform as well. This Nvidia news is awesome to me since from what I understand it will be pretty strong yet mobile and Nvidia seems to be optimising the OS too. Anyway the only reason I bought a WiiU was for the games. The hardware is crap. It’s not about being impartial. It’s about being realistic XD

  • Victor

Don’t know what kind of PS4 you are using but mine is leagues above my WiiU. Going from playing a game to spotify to web to game to chat. All of it is almost seamless. Compared to that try pressing home button on your wiiu when in a game… Wait… Wait… Oh there we are now click on downloads to see where it’s at or click on Store for an add-on… Wait… Wait… 30seconds later yay! I might be going too far with 30 seconds but point is its really slow. I bought the WiiU for a few exclusive great games but other than those few first party games, don’t try to tell me the hardware is good. It is utter crap. I still enjoy my WiiU for it’s games but the navigation experience and functions are far inferior to competition. It’s not about being impartial. It’s being realistic.

Anyway all that to say I do love Nintendo as a game maker and I am excited to see what this Nvidia partnership will bring because it will give them something they didn’t have for a long time now. A powerful system at home and the strongest portable gaming system. Now pair this with their great games and I’m pretty sure we will have a winner. Anyway I’m planning to get Day1

  • Cesar Caestus

There’s going to be a new MonHun Direct on 28 in Japan but I don’t know if its for switch. According to the image, they won’t show any new Switch Titles and Smartphone titles there.

  • hi got banned ( again )

yeah i heard about that too, and its not switch related only for 3ds

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

I already told you… Shut it… The Wii was not a disaster… Oh and when i told you about all the great games on the wii. I forgot mentioning Super Smash Bros. and the full gamecube library as well! My bad!
And have i told you the Wii U outsold the xBone? Yeah? Oh well whatever. The Wii U outsold the xBone!

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

Well that’s what i thought, but after a bit of reading. Pascal could also mean a X1
Still the wisest choice would be the X2 for concurencing performance, and better battery life…

  • Παναγιώτης

Do you honestly believe that someone buys a console or a hardware in general for the specs or for the software?

  • Παναγιώτης

Except for Wii and WiiU. Nintendo always has been a power based company.
    In pure graphic horsepower
    NES better than competition
    SNES better than competition
    N64 better than competition
    Gamecube better than competition.

  • Παναγιώτης

The reason that gamecube played mini DVD was for the game loading. Nintendo did not wanted to have a hardware like playstation that loading was forever on each game.

  • ThatGuy

Yeah, youre insane a world without nintendo means gaming console prices will definitely go up as sony and microsoft willl have a monopoly over console gamers.

  • ThatGuy

How is nintendo behind? your logic is baffling.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

You did not tell me anything, but all Nintendo paid posters sing the same song. The Wii was a novelty item with no lasting power. It was a fad that made money, then disappeared like fads do. Nintendo tried to capitalize on the fad by naming the next system Wii U, but it failed.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

You wrote a whole lot about nuthin. The Wii U failed. Nintendo admits it and everyone knows it. No need to keep lying.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Because their systems are behind in technology and they either cannot compete or refuse to try. Also, if you have not paid attention, Nintendo has not been #1 since the NES, or if you want to go there – the SNES – at the end of that generation’s war, but Sega won that one. I know you will talk about the Wii, but that was a novelty item…

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

That’s not true. They had the mini DVD because they looked cute and toy-like, like the GC design.

  • Shinobi1992

At what point was it ever confirmed that the X2 chip would be used in the Switch?

  • Mark Burley

4k hdr virtual reality mobile phones that will be more powerful than ps4 and xbox one in next 2 years gaming pcs with near console convenience that you can use with your tv and a decent controller ergo we moved on bud.

  • madjr

Nintendo doesn’t like to be compared purely on raw specs that’s why. People make a huge fuzz about every little detail which avg. Joe doesn’t really care that much about and make people forget about the actual games or having fun.

But still This will be the most powerful mobile Nintendo console and most powerful tablet on the market so let’s see what devs do with that

I think in future the SWITCH Pro or SWITCH 2 should use VULKAN MULTI GPU support and work like SLI. Then the games can specify if they are more optimized for Dock/home (SLI) or for Mobile (battery, touch screen, etc). That’s where the industry should head next.

  • Gizmo

We all know what Nintendo “doesn’t” like. In this case doggedly resilient against what a large portion of their consumers and gaming enthusiasts everywhere are wanting to know. Basic specifications and ballpark performance figures for their hardware.

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

There’s no lie. It done better than a competitor…

  • Kevin Tapp Minville

A diagram comparing existing GPU with Tegra chip confused me about Pascal Architecture Vs. Tegra “Parker”
I thought that Parker was an architetcture used in the latest GTX 1080Ti… My bad!

Still, i think that would be the only logical move. The X1 would give 50% of the PS4 performance on a 20nm chip. The X2 would give 80% prior to costumisation on a 16nm chip, wich means better performance to keep the third parties, less heat because even with a heatsink the Switch is thight and less heat is always a plus, AND less energy consumption for a better battery life!

I just hope Nintendo play safe and put all the best and most powerfull component possible on their console!

  • Shankovich

Yes it could have the Denver CPU’s from X1, in which case we have a X1.5 or something like that. Nintendo could also just leave out the Denver cores in X2 and stick with just the ARMs

  • Ren O

“Gamecube better than competition” not again the first XBOX that was a truly graphic monster (among the consoles at that time), made by a monster company, agreed with you on the rest of the statement. saludos!

Ha ha nintendo is a powerhouse ? Really? Mortal kombat was both on sega genesis and snes , genesis version had bloods gores vs snes had compromise fatality . Plus all these nintendo consoles that random dude below me mention as nintendo powerhouse , all was defeated by a singles brand – PlayStation , PlayStation 2,PlayStation 4. Even PlayStation 3 outsell wiiu. I too use to beg , wait for master nintendo to ever release a console that is powerful , but my wait end after the first PlayStation console came out , afterward nintendo become a hasbeen joke of my childhood lifestory.I never spend 1 penny on anything with a nintendo brand on, i skip wii, i skip wiiu, . As for Nintendo switch , nintendo will never get my cash. Nobody play those wannabe smartphone games like mario an such anymore , people play candycrush, etc. Who going to buy a mario switch at 69.99 or 59.99 ? When you get mobile games for 99c or free? Nintendo trying to compete with device people already use or carry around , will not bode well. Also revealing Switch, trying to capture hardcore audiences with an Old 2007 game Skyrim, is retardation . You should of had Darksoul 4 , Elderscroll6 ,ninja Gaiden4 not Skyrim . While your Switch console get Skyrim , lol , we pre ordering Red Dead Redemption 2 on our old 2013 consoles PS4, an Our Xbox one , who happen to be more powerful then your 9gen console the Switch . Nvidia is a chip maker that love public attention , nintendo sign a deal with the devil, sony learn from mistake , drop Nvidia . Also While little casual audience of the zero install base of Nintendo switch , as of now , pondered mario , luigi, mario kart , cel shaded zelda game, i will be playing Last Guardian , World of Final fantasy , Dragon quest builder , persona5, yakuza6, dragon quest heroes1, dragon quest heroes2, yakuza Zero , Gravity rush2, Horizon zero dawn, God Of War , Daygone, Detroit become human , gran turismo sport, Red Dead redemption 2 , darksoul3,uncharted4,Dream, Future sequel like The Last of us2, Halo6, Gear of War5, PSVR, all 5 PSVR games . Bro should i continue bit more? Sunset Overdrive , Halo5, Gear of war4, forza5, forza6, forza horizon2, forza horizon3, Quantumbreak, Halo war2, scalebound, crackdown 3,dragon quest 11, FFXV, dishonored2, watchdog2, GTA5,call of duty infinite warfare , Battlefield 1, Titanfall2. While nintendo still begging to get proper 3rd party support , meanwhile PlayStation an xbox has been getting 3rd party support since Adam &Eve days . Do i even be serious ? Ok let me stop.

  • PROJECT_OV3RK1LL

All these games ive mention use way more powers then a cel shaded zelda game on the 9 gen console the nintendo switch , lol. Nintendo switch is an example of a PS2 HD console.

  • PROJECT_OV3RK1LL

How the damn a 9 gen console look weak then an 8 gen consoles ? Hmmm?

  • PROJECT_OV3RK1LL

Those people that worship switch , are those people without a smart devices , a smartphone , a tablets etc. Lol

  • PROJECT_OV3RK1LL

Nvidia ha ha , they were so sour , sony microsoft didn’t use them as vendor .

  • PROJECT_OV3RK1LL

Btw nintendo sue Kevin Perira .

  • PROJECT_OV3RK1LL

All i ever need is a PlayStation , a PC , an a xbox gamepad , my smartphone , my tablet , that it . I will never switch . Ha ha switch .

  • PROJECT_OV3RK1LL

    I am God

  • EMILY

The Wii U controller had a short battery life; lasting about three to five hours. I wonder how much battery life the Nintendo Switch will have.

  • Josh Hines

Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release in the first week of March 2017, with a retail price of $299 (£244.22).

  • Josh Hines

Switch will arrive on 4th March of next year.
While pricing comes after Tesco published a placeholder page for the
pre-order of the new console, with the retailer listing it as for sale
    for £350

  • komrath

We didn’t get specs yet, so you’re spreading misinformation now. I wrote clearly “I wouldn’t held hopes, but maybe”, since… no specs 😉

  • Onkeljan

Because technology is complex and very few people actually knows what specs mean. For instance it could have only half the flops of an Xbox one, but real world performance could be much closer than what the flop count would indicate. Most people would still think its just half as powerful, because they dont know how to read the specs.

  • Παναγιώτης

nope. Mini DVD was waaay faster than a normal DVD. Its plain simple math. In a generation of 2x – 4x speed drives, a drive with a disc half the size of a normal DVD is faster. The laser needs to travel back and forth in smaller routes than a laser of a normal disc. But forget about that. If you have those consoles Gamecube + PS2, try to load the same game, you will witness the difference on loading speeds instantly.

  • Gizmo

Nonsense. No-ones talking about the finer points of compiling and debugging here. Lol

Exactly. Haha! My point exactly. Tells us the basic specifications. Tell us the GFLOP potential. Point out how that translate to real world performance through the games. Outline the customisation’s and what made them a “serious undertaking in engineering”.

And, people will make their own comparisons. Educate the masses on the “basics”. Bring us in. Lead us up to launch.

Technical specifications are a part of the process today. Absolutely people want to know whats under the hood.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

It was no ‘way’ faster, it was only slightly faster because it had less information to read. They used the mini-DVD simply to keep the system in line with a toy. WHo else would love baby DVD’s but women and kids? Those are the same demographics who loved the Wii…

  • Chris Mihaylov

i wonder how do they achieve performance and still can make it mobile i mean how do you even cool these cpu’s and gpu’s?

  • Graham Banzer

source of information? Nintendo certainly haven’t given that info.

  • Illuminargie

Correction: It has a good game. Bloodbourne. That’s it.

  • Illuminargie

Er…no. I like a lot of Wii games, but they did not look anywhere near as good as games on the 360/PS3.

  • Illuminargie

The 3DS is pretty safe. RIP Wii U would be more appropriate.

  • Illuminargie

That’s not the lowest end GPU, nob. In fact that’s a fairly high-end GPU.

  • Παναγιώτης

Obviously you dont know what are you talking about. If you can do the test on THE SAME GAME you can see that

  • Dan Eagen

Your statement is contradictory. It being a “goddamn handheld” means that it will have LESS specs than a full blown console.

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

I DO know what I am talking about. The same people who claim the GC was more powerful than the PS2 don’t know what they are talking about.

  • CRASHIR

Now I hate to be the one to start but, isn’t it kinda funny how not a SINGLE person replied to any of your comments on here before me? xD

  • CRASHIR

fad or not, it still made more money. :/ would you say the Wii U failed financially wise? It didn’t make as much money as they were expecting, but they still gained more then they lost making the console, which is honestly all they needed, they got a crap ton of money from the 3Ds anyway, not even mentioning Pokemon Go. Though I suppose compared to the Xbone and the PS4 the Wii U did fail. It has some excuses though.

  • CRASHIR

They’ve pleased a lot of fans recently, lot of the titles on the Wii U were actually really good which is surprising sense it mainly had 1st party titles, lol imagine if it had the 3rd party titles with it, what Nintendo didn’t do was please the people outside of the Nintendo fan category. Say the casual gamers, the Sony fans, the Microsoft fans, and 3rd party which was unfortunate.

  • MatterOfTime

Splatoon and xenoblade thats about it. Everything is else is pretty meh unless ur a diehard nintendrone

  • ReturnoftheBrotha .

Why are you worrying about Nintendo’s money? Whatever they made with the Wii (which was a lot since they had used parts on it) they lost a lot on the Wii U.

  • chibiwings

no wonder all we get are remasters and port Titles from older platform.

  • chibiwings

Not to mention the Gazillion Shovelware ad infested apps that android has.

  • Vox Wave

1st Party Wii U games we’re still consistent in performance and still good looking. Being demanding isn’t an excuse to have poor performance/framerate.

  • Donovan Tull

Strangely enough, it is available for pre-order on the major suppliers in my area. Although they have no clue what the price will be.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Laura Kate Dale said the base unit (not including a game, and with the lowest internal storage) will be $260. One with more storage will be $300 and one that includes a game will be $340. But then again she didn’t indicate a source for that either.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Mini DVDs don’t load any faster than regular ones. The difference is that they’re smaller — and hold less memory.

The Wii used full-size DVD’s, but was effectively just an overclocked GameCube in hardware. Meanwhile PS3 and XB360 used larger-format optical media (PS3 with Blu-Ray, XB360 with HD-DVD).

Nintendo’s first-party titles evaded the “takes forever to load” problem not by having faster read speeds, but rather by being clever about loading transitions. Metroid Prime, for instance, shows you an animation of Samus going up or down the elevator while the big area loads, and then only loads the next area when you shoot the door.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Actually, hardware texture decompression *does* make the GC more powerful than the PS2.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Not only are PS4P and XBS not portables, they’re also not even really new consoles as all the games that come out for them must also run on PS4 and XBO.

Also, Nintendo hasn’t said much more of what the Switch can do. We see the detachable/sharable controllers, the docking, local multiplayer across multiple consoles, and massive effort to get developer support (most importantly by directly supporting Unity and Unreal). But there’s a lot we don’t know. Motion controls? Touch controls? Pointer controls? Switch in game-specific custom controllers? Secondary / upgradeable GPU in the dock or connection to PC? Actual capabilities of the system? Online system? Don’t know.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

X2 is basically X1, but with 2 Denver cores + 4 ARM cores, a process node shrink and the GPUs updated to Pascal microarchitecture.

I suspect Nintendo’s “customization” might be to drop the Denver cores (or maybe drop the standard ARM cores) and fill in the rest with an extra 128 CUDA cores, bringing it to 384 CUDA cores instead of the standard 256 in Parker. But that’s just me talking out of my butt.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

The original Xbox used Nvidia, but 360 and One used AMD because AMD is cheaper.
Nintendo had been using AMD since GameCube, precisely because AMD is cheaper.

Playstation 3 used an Nvidia graphics chip, but PS3 was hella expensive.
PS4 moved over to an AMD SoC.

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Nope, definitely wrong. In general, Nvidia makes more powerful hardware. Much better output for the same number of execution units.

However, with AMD managing to take the lion’s share of the gaming platform market (thanks to lower pricing), more games get optimized for AMD. Then again, it could also be that you made the switch across a significant generation (i.e. picking up support for a newer version of DirectX or OpenGL) and the difference is entirely in which API it uses.

  • Jonathan Twyman

Cool. I didn’t know who made the hardware. But still the hardware used in their systems are generally under powered. That was my point, not that they actually manufacture the hardware.

  • Παναγιώτης

    Blah blah blah…
I have both consoles. Same games load faster on Gamecube PERIOD.

Dont know what is the cause if its not the drive but the fact is a fact. Games load faster. I dont speak about first party games but multiplatform games

  • QuantumElectronicsDeplorable

Hardware encode/decode makes a pretty big difference, and I’m pretty sure where that’s where at least part of it is coming from.

  • Nuruddin Peters

    Yep – Fair point.

Also, I completely agree with your other points and I’m also getting the Nintendo Switch for the same reasons you listed!

In addition, I also do sincerely hope, we can STREAM Nintendo’s hardware it via native nvidia drivers to PC! ^_^ Would be amazing!

  • 121GWJolt

    You forgot Bayonetta/Bayonetta 2.

  • 121GWJolt

I think Nintendo will allow it under the condition that they think that it won’t affect performance. I’m pretty sure they’d rather not implement a feature at all than implement one poorly… I think.

  • Brad Onder

Imagine if it was Nvidia GameStream compatible as well. It would be cool if they also added the Shield Hub too, but I doubt that one…lol

  • Zeus

Big Nintendo fan in the 90’s and early 2000’s. From the NES to the Game Cube. After that I felt Nintendo fell flat on there arse. The WII (Even though sold Millions) to me was a waste of time. I bought one and played it for a week maximum. The Wii U, Well what a disaster! Went off Nintendo, completely then. I’ve had the majority of consoles through the years but have settled on a PS4 of late. I’ve had it from day one and to be honest, now I have a son, I don’t play on it. Then I heard about the Nintendo switch and have to say I’m slightly excited. The problem with PS4 and XBOX, is they are really powerful consoles which is awesome. I like good graphics and its why I stopped buying Nintendo because they gave up and went onto gimmicks. For me it appears games are made by quantity not quality for PS4/XBOX1. Nintendo, have always gone for quality on their own games (There’s always something Magical about buying and playing a Nintendo game :-). I’m not fussed by the Switch’s take your game anywhere thing although at work lunch breaks it will be good or for traveling. I’m really hoping that the switch will have some decent power and graphics. I’m not asking for it to destroy the PS4 or XBOX One but to be at least near them. To be able to play Mario Kart, Mario, Zelda etc with gorgeous graphics, is all I want from Nintendo.
I really hope there not using some custom version of the Tegra X1. its really underpowered compared to PS4 etc. Tegra X2 isn’t much better to be honest at 0.75 TFLOPS but if it’s a custom version of the Parker then we don’t know what’s been altered.
All I want is a simple to use console. Plug and play. not overly complicated UI that takes up gigs or ram up before you even start and has that many options the console doesn’t realise its designed to play games and thinks its everything including the toaster! haha
Some pretty decent power and gorgeous graphics and least on par with today’s consoles.
4 Nintendo Game pro controllers. (not going to use the dogs ears unless i’m away)
And awesome games. I.E. Mario Kart.
Basically, I just want a powerful Nintendo to play awesome, Nintendo games on.
I still play on my game cube and N64, when the lads come over. You cant beat those consoles and games.
Come on Nintendo/Nvidia, you have got mine and a lot of my friends interest back.
I guess, we will find out in January press release.
    Bring it home 🙂
P.S. sorry for rambling, but have been waiting for a decent powerful-ISH Nintendo to come back for years.
    Just my thoughts 🙂

  • Odscyll

Will the system support HDR since the NVIDIA architecture already supports it?

  • QuantumElectronicsDude

“they have never been a power based company”
They sure were with SNES and N64. They did really well with power on the GameCube, but they were outdone by Microsoft’s Xbox that generation.

After the relative market failure of the GameCube, they decided to focus on being more fun than everybody else.

The best combo imho would be a PC and a Switch.

  • QuantumElectronicsDude

Wrong . . . the Wii sold 5x as many hardware units as GCN.

  • QuantumElectronicsDude

The switch isn’t next gen. It’s current gen.

  • Embassy

Both the GameCube AND Xbox were much more powerful than the PS2. People bought the PS2 to play DVDs, and Sony’s system was out for a year competing against nothing but the Dreamcast, giving it a large install base head start. The reason for the faster load times on the GameCube is simply because it had a better processor, and faster storage solution (GameCube Memory Cards were more efficient than the much older PS2 Memory Cards). The best looking games of that generation were all on GameCube and Xbox. Compare Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime, to any shooters on PS2.

  • Embassy

While you are accurate, the ‘kiddie’ problem actually began a much longer time ago. SEGA were the ones who began that endeavor. When Mortal Kombat (the first one) was released uncensored on Genesis, and with various changes on SNES, it created a generation of gamers who thought Nintendo didn’t want M-rated games on their system. Now, as you know, that was totally incorrect, and Nintendo even put Mortal Kombat 2 on SNES uncensored anyway just a few months later. But the marketing worked. Then Crash Bandicoot and Sonic were both ‘rad dudes with attitude’ vs ‘Everyone’s Dad, Mario”, and Nintendo found themselves stuck with this “for kids” image even BEFORE they published and released N64 classics Goldeneye, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, and more on GameCube (Geist, Eternal Darkness, and those 3rd party games you mentioned).

  • Shahnewaz Ahmed

Remember when Nvidia said next-gen consoles were low end?
    Oh the irony…

Not fooling us again, thanks. We learned our lesson with the Wii U. Probably bought one-tenth the games compared to the Wii. What good is a fun console if you don’t support it? Would have loved an NHL game. Last game bought before Mario Maker was Tekken Tag I think (my fave version). Or maybe Smash Bros. So the 360 and PS4 get more use because the Wii U has NO GAMES. Not again Nintendo. I think we’ll wait this time.

  • TDude73

That was then. This Nintendo Switch is now.

  • TDude73

    It’s not a 3DS replacement. It’s basically a Wii U replacement.

  • TDude73

Only after Nintendo and NVIDIA introduces the Switch’s SCD (Supplemental Computing Device).

  • TDude73

Sorry.. but Nintendo have inked a deal with NVIDIA in creating a brand new (and first) processor based on a new Tegra X2 (Pascal) with GeForce based technology. Not only that, Nintendo, NVIDIA and Vulkan may have created an exclusive NVN API GPU for third party developers port PS4, XBOne and PC games onto the Nintendo Switch.

  • Shahnewaz Ahmed

What kind of excuse is that? It’s still terribly low end regardless.

  • drno

its a tablet with a hdmi out dock. Its a 3ds replacement. Not really a console as they are becoming more like PC’s now.

  • TDude73

    Think about the future, Achmed.

  • TDude73

According to data from TechnoBuffalo, the Nintendo Switch is a home/portable console. Read this from Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima–

“Nintendo Switch is a HOME GAMING SYSTEM FIRST AND FOREMOST. We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS.
Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there’s still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. There are many more games in the pipeline.”

  • TDude73

    Double standards.

  • Shahnewaz Ahmed

The future only demands more power. Both PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio are living examples of that.
I don’t know what “future” are you talking about.

  • TDude73

    So what?

  • TDude73

Says the Nintendo and NVIDIA hater who needs to think about the future.

  • TDude73

    Shut up, Meg.

  • TDude73

    Really… shut up, Meg.

You are a nobody! Troll someplace else!

  • TDude73

    Who cares, troll?

  • TDude73

    Shut up, troll.

  • TDude73

The problem is that your days of trolling is over, You’re really in for a nightmare because Nintendo is getting more third party support in making games for the Switch than what they had on the Wii U. Even Unreal Engine 4 is supporting the Switch. Nintendo and NVIDIA has Vulkan and they have created an NVN API GPU. With this exclusive architecture, it would be easier for third parties to port their PS4, XBox One, and freaking PC games onto the Switch without any limitations. Take THAT, troll! Get N or get out!

Read beyond the hype. Looks at the xoneS and ps4. Their dimensions. Which are their in order to keep the components they contain cool so they can drive games at near 2k and upscale 4k. These consoles are a temporary release as they are both releasing new consoles in a couple years. The switch might be as powerful as a generation 1 xone of ps4, but the problem is the future and developers resources. If you notice releases today they can barely release games that aren’t in need of a huge day1 patch. Many of the PC ports just release in awful shape and get fixed later. Developers have bitten off more than they can chew in trying to keep up with the pc master race fps/4k/ultra texture/cuda chase.

Nintendo consoles always release to big fanfare but I’m looking at the longevity they will have trying to run these triple A titles on the power of a tablet. It’s a hyped up nvidia shield. I hope it doesn’t end up like the wii and wii-u. When those consoles hit the power barrier they both hit it hard. No one would develop AAA stuff for them (yes the wii sold well but people left it in droves). Odd choice for Nintendo to go the gimmick route again when gamers are demanding pc like power now and future 4k compatibility. A nintendo console cannot survive just based on its in house releases. Will devlopers be willing to make special ports for an architecture with limitations such as 4gb of ram, sd card storage ect. Some of these games are like 40GB without updates or day1 patches. I won’t even mention mods 🙂
