Roads and Transportation
Renton is at the center of an extensive regional and international transportation network. Interstate 405 and State Routes 167, 169, 515 and 900 pass through Renton, bringing more than 350,000 vehicles a day through the City. Arterials such as Rainier Avenue, Benson Road, Carr Road, and Duvall Avenue NE provide access to and from Renton for commuters and residents alike.
Renton plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains a transportation system that provides safe and efficient movement of people and goods; enhances environmental quality; and is compatible with local and regional mobility goals and development objectives. The City of Renton Transportation Systems Division is a division within the Public Works Department. The Transportation Systems Division includes four work groups: Transportation Planning and Programming, Transportation Design and Construction, Traffic Operations and Maintenance and the Renton Municipal Airport.
Within Renton, bus and train services are provided by Sound Transit and King County Metro. City staff coordinate with these agencies to develop transit system improvements which can include service enhancements (new routes or improved service frequency) or capital investments (signal queue jumps and park and ride facilities). Sound Transit is investing in capital projects giving HOVs direct access to, or travel priority at, key locations into and out of downtown Renton.
The Washington State Department of Transportation’s I 405 Corridor Program will improve the highway through Renton with construction started in 2008.
