Each month the Current Employment Statistics program surveys about 147,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 634,000 individual worksites, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 450 metropolitan areas and divisions.

Jobless rates were lower in April than a year earlier in 322 of the 388 metropolitan areas, higher in 46, and unchanged in 20. Nonfarm payroll employment was up in 297 metropolitan areas over the year, down in 81, and unchanged in 10.

In April, unemployment rates were lower in 10 states, higher in 1 state, and stable in 39 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 9 states, decreased in 1, and was essentially unchanged in 40 states and the District.
