PHOTO: Suspect in Scalise Shooting Demonstrated With 'Tax the Rich' Sign
An Illinois U.S. House Republican said this morning his office was contacted 10 times in the past 11 months by the man who opened fire Wednesday on a congressional baseball practice.
The shooter, Belleville, Illinois, native James Hodgkinson, contacted Rep. Mike Bost's office nine times by email and once by phone.
Bost said on "Fox & Friends," however, that the messages did not raise any red flags and were not threatening.
"He didn't agree with me and my positions but nowhere was it one of those, 'oh my gosh, there's a problem here,'" said Bost.
Bost said they've gotten many more disturbing messages from people over the years and routinely flag them to law enforcement.
"He never showed any signs," he explained.
Bost said the social media messages posted by Hodgkinson are unfortunately commonplace right now in the current political climate.
The shooter supported Bernie Sanders and posted numerous anti-GOP messages, including one that read "Trump is a traitor. Trump has destroyed our democracy. It's time to destroy Trump & Co."
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) remains in critical condition after being shot in the hip, while three people were also wounded and expected to recover.
