The VFL Magpies have succumbed to its sixth loss of the 2017 season after falling to the Casey Demons by 19 points on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields.
Despite a four-goal performance from Chris Mayne, the Magpies struggled to control the run and carry of the hometown Demons, allowing Melbourne’s VFL-affiliate to dictate the pace of the game.
A convincing five goal to three third quarter from the Demons threatened to blow the game open, but a hard-fought final thirty minutes by the Magpies ensured the final margin remained in tact.
VFL-listed Matt Smith was one of the Magpies’ best afield in his second game back from injury, while Jarryd Blair, Lachlan Keeffe, Jackson Ramsay and Sam McLarty all impressed.
Mason Cox continued his push for senior selection with a strong first half – kicking two goals in the opening 15 minutes – before being pulled off the ground as a potential carry-over for Monday’s Queen’s Birthday clash.
The VFL Magpies will return to action in two weeks after their bye.
