Theresa May fights for her political life

After days of mounting criticism over her handling of the fatal Grenfell Tower blaze, Mrs May admitted that the response to families needing support 'was not good enough'. Her statement was billed by a No 10 source as a 'mea culpa'. But her critics described it as a 'belated act of contrition' which was itself 'not good enough'. The apology came as Mrs May met survivors of Grenfell Tower in Downing Street - her third attempt in as many days to assuage public anger over the tragedy, which has so far claimed at least 58 lives.

Firefighter's harrowing account of inside Grenfell Tower

Jon Wharnsby (left) recalls the agony of choosing between a terrified mother and daughter screaming on a tenth-floor stairway - or pushing on to a 14th-floor flat where residents also faced death. In a split second, he and a crewmate reached the same decision. Bellowing at each other through breathing masks, they agreed: the people choking on fumes in front of them could be saved; the fate of residents higher up was less certain. Without help, the woman and her girl would have needed a miracle to make it downstairs through the thick, choking smoke. Minutes after carrying them to safety, Jon and crew partner Terry Lowe were back inside, again trying to reach the 14th floor.

Council officials and politicians have been castigated for their slow response to last Wednesday's inferno, which police said yesterday has claimed the lives of at least 58 people.

A spokesman for the London fire service said an investigative report into the disastrous inferno in west London (pictured) will not be made public until an inquest is over- which could be years.

Trooping the Colour: Royal Children join Queen for flyover

It may have been the Queen's 91st birthday but Kate Middleton and her two young children Prince George and Princess Charlotte were the stars of the show on a packed Buckingham Palace balcony. The young Royals joined the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh and the other members of the family as they waved to large crowds outside the palace and watched an RAF flypast for Trooping the Colour. Prince George can be seen mouth agape and head tilted to the sky watching the planes. The three-year-old was also snapped peering out of the window behind the balcony taking in the thousands of people below. His younger sister, Princess Charlotte, shared a joke with her parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William, and other youngsters atop the balcony.

The entire extended Royal Family were present at the Trooping of the Colour in a four-generation show of strength (pictured). In her birthday address the Queen praised Britain's 'resolute' nature.

Jessica was trapped on the 20th floor (pictured right) as the inferno spread, when she called her mother begging to help. In the wake of the disaster Jessica's parents (pictured inset) have been frantically searching throughout London A&E; wards for any sign of her.

'I'm ashamed of this borough!' Kensington council worker leads chorus of fury against 'eyesore for the rich' cladding at emotional survivors' meeting as new Labour MP reveals Grenfell victims 'have been given just £10 a day to live on'

Dozens of former residents and victims met at the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre (inset) in Notting Hill. One man named Mohammed (left), who has lived in the area for 13 years, said: 'I'm ashamed of this borough. I am absolutely ashamed!' Mohammed said: 'I know the structure of that building, I know the families in that building. I know that should not have happened. There's been hundreds and hundreds of fires and nothing like that has ever happened. It's always been contained.' Meanwhile the new MP for Kensington (right) has claimed that some of the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster have been sent outside of the borough with just £10 a day to live on.

KATIE HOPKINS: I don't blame the fury from the victims of the Grenfell inferno. When all we ever get from our government are empty words, lack of facts and paralysed inaction, rage is all we have

Anger is spilling over onto the streets of London. Three days after a tower block of sleeping people turned into a flaming torch in the sky, people have had enough, writes KATIE HOPKINS. They are sick of the lack of information. And despairing at the impotence of the politicians and leaders who have failed to react in any meaningful way to their anguish. Or to offer anything that feels like real help. 'What do we want? JUSTICE. When do we want it? NOW.' They shouted as they marched. What they really want is answers. Answers to all the simple question will answer. Based on what we do know, how many are thought to be dead?

The Prime Minister - who will meet residents, victims and volunteers - was this morning chairing a cross government meeting 'to support those affected by the Grenfell tragedy', a Downing Street spokesperson has said. Mrs May faced intense criticism over her response to the tragedy in which at least 30 people died this week. She was first blasted for avoiding locals when she visited the charred shell of the tower on Thursday. The wristbands grant access to the refuge centre close to the site. Pictured main, the victims arrive, and inset, the protests outside.

MI6 US intelligence Scot Young was killed by Putin hitmen

Scot Young (pictured left with then-girlfriend Noelle Reno), who died in December 2014 after falling from a balcony in London, was one of nine people to die in strange circumstances after telling police he was being targeted by Russian hitmen. All the cases were deemed non-suspicious by police in Britain, but a new investigation has uncovered evidence and claims MI6 asked US officials if the deaths could be assassinations. Tim Farron has been the victim of a vicious smear campaign by an ex-porn star and Liberal Democrat party member enraged by the former leader's views on homosexuality, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. Chris Cooke (right), who was suspended from the party after posting an offensive tweet, made a formal complaint to party managers in the middle of the Election campaign, raising unfounded claims about Mr Farron's personal conduct as an act of revenge over the suspension. Embarrassingly, just eight months before he made the complaint, Cooke was pictured with his arm around Farron at the party's annual conference in September last year (left). Prior to joining politics, Mr Cooke had starred in films titled Double Pleasure, SoldierBoy and SpyBoy (inset).

Prince Harry has bought Meghan Markle a gold band - but sadly for the actress and Royal watchers, it is meant for her thumb rather than her wedding finger. According to sources on the set of her US TV show Suits, Meghan only takes it off to film scenes under the guise of Rachel Zane, her high-achieving paralegal alter ego.

One of the pair was stark naked and the other, carrying her clothes in her arms, had just a tiny G-string on.

Bill Cosby trial is declared a mistrial after six days

The jury in Bill Cosby's sensational trial for aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand (inset left center) have failed to reach a verdict in an outcome that has thrown the court into disarray. The 79-year-old disgraced actor was in court to hear the stunning news, bringing to an end a trial that lasted just six days and a defense that lasted just six minutes. But after roughly 53 hours of deliberations the jury returned unable to reconcile the two very different scenarios placed before them by the prosecution and Cosby's defense. Judge O'Neilll asked each juror individually, 'Do you agree that there is a hopeless deadlock that cannot be resolved by further deliberations?' Each responded 'Yes.' Moments after the jury had confirmed that it was 'hopelessly deadlocked' after 53 hours of deliberation - one of the most 'selfless courageous acts' Judge O'Neill said he had ever seen - Brian McMonagle asked for a mistrial. O'Neill granted it for Manifest Necessity. Montgomery County will retry Cosby on all three counts. Prosecutor Kevin Steele announced the decision as O'Neill released Cosby who remains charged and on bail in this county on three counts of aggravated sexual assault. There was an loud gasp from the court when Steele told the judge that the Commonwealth will retry Cosby - who did not react.

How many bikinis does one woman need, Coleen?

For the fashion-conscious WAG, swimwear really is a game of two halves. And with those troublesome paparazzi sure to be around, what choice does a girl have but to call on a teeny-weeny bikini - or 12? Coleen Rooney and her Manchester United star husband Wayne enjoyed a family vacation in Barbados before jetting off last week to Mykonos for a romantic break together without their tribe. And she made the most of her opportunities - sporting a different tiny outfit for every day of the week. Yet observers may have spotted a very cunning tactic, as she relied on her favourite and most flattering design in every possible colour. Coleen's definitely top of the beach league - in a remarkable choice of away kits...

George Clooney's new estate on a private island in the Thames is something of a fortress but couples out boating managed to pierce the tight security by crashing into the boathouse. As the Hollywood star and his wife Amal, a prominent human rights lawyer, welcomed their new twins into their Sonning home this week, a undignified assault on the property happened on the shore just a few yards from the house. The scene had been an idyllic one. Just the burbling of the backwater, the buzzing of dragonflies and the occasional volley of laughter echoing across the water from the Clooney estate. But calm quickly turned to panic as a large motor yacht loomed into view and attempted to turn round in the narrow straight between Clooney's island and the river bank in the sleepy Oxfordshire village.

Beauty pageant BANNED after Playboy Bunny outfits worn

Beauty pageant organisers have been told they are no longer welcome to host Miss Newcastle at the Civic Centre. Councillor Kim McGuinness (pictured left) said that the event was 'sexist and antiquated.' Newcastle City Council said the event does not 'represent the values' of the authority. Miss Newcastle in its current form celebrated its 10th anniversary at the Civic Centre on June 2. The event - which has raised thousands of pounds for charity - saw 20 girls aged between 16 and 23 compete for the crown and guarantee qualification for Miss England. Organisers Tyne Tees Models chose a Hollywood theme but Playboy Bunny outfits, combined with a swimsuit round, drew criticism. Bosses say they had already made their decision to hand over the pageant's reins after this year's event and new organisers had already said they would not be returning to the publicly-owned building.

The autoimmune disorder, which affects 6.8 million Americans, causes people to lose hair on their head, face, and, in some cases, other parts of the body. In the past, Bamberger , who is now 27, concealed the condition with wigs. But they weren't comfortable to wear, so she stopped sporting them more than a decade ago-and had no intention to try them again to walk down the aisle. So on her wedding day, Bamberger proudly rocked her bald head, with a lovely white headband on which she attached a veil.

We all have tough days sometimes. And for Ruto the cat, life's greatest challenge came in the shape of a door that separated her from a much-loved toy. In a hilarious video shared to the feline's very own Instagram page, an unbearable 30 seconds go by without the cat realising she could simply walk around the door to reach her toy in Gothenburg, Sweden. The caption to the clip, shared to the page by Ruto's owner, Frida Simonsson, said: 'Me trying to reach my life goals.'
