About

WoW Roleplay Gear was first conceived in December 2009, as The Visual Roleplay Gear List, although not officially released until Autumn 2010 due to the large amount of preparation building up a database of item sets. Since these early days, the site has grown to encompass in excess of 1500 different articles, gear sets and roleplay related items, although the work is far from complete!

Roleplay Gear is the brainchild of Ironyca and Noelani, a couple living in Denmark in reality, and Argent Dawn EU in virtuality. The aim of the project is to present an easily navigable compilation of gear sets in WoW.

Ironyca

Ironyca is responsible for all of the pictures and graphical additions to the site, as well as being the creative driving force behind most of the set building process (the one who puts the items together in a neat, aesthetically pleasing package). Formerly a raiding shadow priest and elemental shaman, Ironyca now takes a more relaxed approach to WoW, enjoying the experience of levelling alts through revamped Azeroth, and blogging about the social side of gaming @ Ironyca Stood in the Fire. She studies Computer Game Analysis.

Noelani

The articles, coding and texts on the site are written by Noelani, who also does some of the research to put item sets together, namely those from dungeons/raids. Noelani has played WoW since late 2004 in the EU Beta, and has been a guild and raid leader for the majority of that time. He currently raids as an assassination rogue. The character Noelani is actually a hunter, and an alt of the aforementioned rogue. Noelani has 600 Archaeology skill both in-game and in reality, although sadly only holds the Professor title in one of those planes of existence.

Site Info & FAQ

Selection Process

When making articles and compiling item sets, there are a few things we have to take into consideration. Here’s a small explanation of our reasoning.

• Model Choice
We do our best to present gear on characters of all WoW races and genders, however, as most players are probably aware, certain models distort armor in ways that are not necessarily optimal for display. For example, hooven races notoriously distort boots and smaller characters can make it challenging to even see the clothing. As such, you’re likely to find that the most represented models on the site are those with the most straight postures and medium body sizes.

• Gear Choice
When selecting outfits to post, we pick items from a wide variety of sources, although we do have a couple of general rules that we try to stick to. We avoid using quest items, as often players will have already completed the quests and will find themselves unable to acquire the items retroactively. Exceptions to this are from after The Shattering of Patch 4.0.3a, which acted as a reset for quests and introduced a whole new wave of item rewards. We also avoid the use of class-specific items in compiled sets, so they are usable by as broad a number of characters as possible.

In some circumstances, we will picture a character with an incomplete gear set for aesthetic reasons (sometimes one piece doesn’t match the others, sometimes a headpiece detracts from the impact of the set etc.), but we do our best to link the missing pieces anyway!

Q. Will there be a weapon/shield section on the site?
A. Not in the near future at least. Although it may be something we consider at a later time, our primary focus for now is armor.

Q. Do you take set submissions?
A. We accept in-game screenshots of sets, which we incorporate into image galleries in each of our articles. You can read more and send your own screenshots on our Outfit Submissions page. However, we don’t accept article submissions at this point in time.

Q. Why have you not included <x> set/item?
A. The site is a constant work in progress. It takes huge amounts of time to compile, create pictures and write an article for each set, so whilst we’re continuously adding new content, it would take a long time for us to feature everything. Remember, the site is a hobby, not our jobs!

Q. You often refer to “BoE world drops” in your articles. What does this mean?
A. BoE world drops are bind-on-equip items which do not have a very specific source. Instead, they may drop from almost any creature within the appropriate level range, and typically have very low (sub 1%) drop rates. If we simply say an item is a “BoE world drop”, that means that it drops from creatures from classic WoW. Those dropping from expansions will be specified, e.g. BoE world drop from Cataclysm zones/instances.

Q. Why has my comment not shown up on the site?
A. All comments have to be approved by us before they show up, so they won’t appear immediately after you’ve posted. If the comment never appears, we probably declined it for one of the following reasons: abusive, has no relevance to the article, not in English (sorry, we realise we have viewers from many nations, but the primary language of the site and the tongue of the majority of our audience is English).

Q. Why haven’t you replied to my comment?!
A. Yeah okay, we’ve never actually been asked this one, so consider it a disclaimer instead. We do our best to reply to everyone seeking our assistance, but we do get a lot of comments so it’s not always easy to respond to them all. Some of the requests for matching items can easily take us more than 30 minutes of research per comment. Don’t get us wrong, we love to receive comments and do our best to help out, but please forgive us if we don’t get around to it!

Q. How did you take the pictures on the site?
A. We use a program called WoW Model Viewer with our own custom gradient background to take the screenshots. We then use Adobe Photoshop to edit them.

Q. How can I format links in my comments?
A. Our comments use HTML language for formatting. If you would like to add a tidy link to your comment you can do so by entering the following piece of code into the comment box, replacing our web address and name with the ones you want:

<a href=”http://www.wowroleplaygear.com/”>WoW Roleplay Gear</a>
This code creates a link that looks like: WoW Roleplay Gear

Hi Just wanted to leave a note telling you that I love your website! I have just recently decided to take the plunge into the world of transmog and your website has proved invaluable! Thanks for your hard work! It awesome!

  2. vic says:

I have a DK wandering around in a lovely cloth set (level 25 or so) that looks like she is wearing a tracksuit. I would love to find either a weapon or some other item that looks like an item of sports equipment. Do you have suggestions? I’m thinking baseball bat is the most likely, but I would love a tennis racquet.

Just found this site today and was amazed to find so many of the “I wonder if” designs I’ve had in my head already here!

I can appreciate the amount of work that would go into what you’ve done, so thank you very much :)

  6. Emilio Martinetti says:

This is an amazing site. I found it while searching for a draenei outfit :D You have great ideas :)

I was wondering if, as you did with the Sentinel set, you will try to create the “set” of the Exodar Peacekeepers. Have you thought of that?

    • Ironyca says:

Hehe, I have made a suggestion for a peacekeeper. They are however impossible (like many other guards) to complete by players, but I have an approximation waiting for publishing. I’ll ask Noelani to post it soon.

    Hey!

Just wanted to say that this is a great site, I’ve found it very useful for several of my chars’ mogging needs.

Just curious if you plan to add a section for unusual and/or matching weapons and shields for some of the sets?

    Cheers

    • Ironyca says:

We’re glad you have found the site useful Mehetabel!
Unusual weaponry and armor is very much an idea we’ve been looking into, perhaps as a highlight article. I already have several pieces in mind…

  8. anon says:

hey, i love this site, its been really helpful, but i can’t help wondering what the details on that fencing/aristocrat set at the top of your website, i can’t seem to find it on any of the pages, though i think it would be an awesome rp look. thanks

    • Noelani says:

That’s a thumbnail from an upcoming revamp of one of our old articles, the Astralaan cloth set. It should be complete in the next day or so!

      • anon says:

oh awesome, this site is so great, thanks so much for putting it all together :)

      • anon says:

sorry, not to be pushy, i know you guys must have tons to work on, but its been about a week since you said a day or so, and i was wondering, am i still missing it? I’ve been looking for it on the stylish cloth tab. thanks a bunch.
also, i saw a character named noelani with some accents and such in my realms stormwind the other day (draneii shaman) and was wondering if that was your character? any, thanks so much for everything your doing here this is the best WoW gear site I’ve ever seen :)

      • Noelani says:

Thanks for the positive words and sorry for the delay, we’re both inundated with things in real life, as well as trying to keep this site going. I can tell you that the set in question is the Astralaan set, minus the robe. In its place, the chestpiece is the Drakeweave Raiment. The sword is one of the many Rapier models in-game, probably Dazzling Mithril Rapier, judging by that thumbnail.

I have only one character named Noelani, with no accents at all, a blood elf hunter on Argent Dawn EU.

      • Noelani says:

Here you go, I finally got around to updating that article for you: Astralaan Set

These off-hands are staff-like, I’m surprised they are not in the accessories page.

    • Noelani says:

We’re not a fully comprehensive site, there’s quite literally thousands of items and sets in WoW. Don’t expect us to have everything, we’re work in progress!

  11. Greenhorcter says:

An epic drop finding this place. Awesome work. Salu2 desde Costa Rica.

This is such a wonderful site. I love all of the combinations of gear and the list of tier sets. I was wondering if you ever considered adding PvP gear to the selection? There are a few friends of mine who have considered using old PvP gear once 4.3 arrives.

    • ironyca says:

      Thanks for your kind words!
It might be an option in the future, but not for now. Before we start looking at PvP gear, we want to post all the quest reward sets and more BoE sets as well.

  13. Anonymous says:

    Hi there!

It’s an absolute pleasure to browse through your site, my compliments. As many before me, I ended up here through the link in the WoW Insider article, and coudln’t be happier.

What I was wondering about; are you two considering adding weapon/shield suggestions to the sets sometime?

    Greets,
    a Fan :)

    • Noelani says:

Hello and thanks for the message! Regarding weapons, we are adding a few to sets as we go along, but our focus for now is primarily upon the armor itself.

For an overview of weapons, I’d recommend Disenchanting Azeroth. They are working on an impressive visual compilation of the different weapon models in WoW.

    Hi,

I have completed a set using a mixture of pvp pieces and a BOE armor that is (in my opinion) great. Is there a place were I can submit the set for your site?

If so, what are your requirements for submissions?

    • Noelani says:

      Hey there,

Have you had any luck with the gloves from the Curator yet?

We’ve been discussing the potential for adding a submissions section to the site in future, and if we do so we’d certainly consider featuring yours. In the meantime, feel free to send an email to ironyca @ hotmail.com with a picture and the names of the items and we’ll happily check it out.

      • Oroko@Skywall says:

Thanks for asking, but no. The Curator still has not relinquished his grasp on my T4 gloves token. Also, I hope you do add a submissions section to the site! I’ll be emailing you my first set (lol I have several on my Pally) and would be thrilled to see it featured on the site!

  15. Anonymous says:

Very impressed by the work you’ve done here…and I expect with the recent news about 4.3 and Transmogrify, you’ll be seeing a lot more traffic. I know I’m on my way to tell my guild about this site!

    Well done.

  16. Anonymous says:

    Hello,

you’ve done a very good job here. A small suggestion: I have a character wearing the the Bloodscale Set. For the missing shoulders I use the Brigade Pauldrons (http://www.wowhead.com/item=9934).

    Cheers
