5 quirky wedding cake ideas

There will always be people who want sophisticated, sleek white wedding cakes - but for each one of those, there will be another who wants a cake that reflects their personality, their wedding theme or simply echoes their loves and hobbies!

A great way to reflect your likes, dislikes - or perhaps just your hair color! - is to have bespoke cake toppers made as representations, Wallace & Gromit-style, of you as a couple. These characters were molded by the good folks at Custom Cakes and can add a light-hearted bit of whimsy to an otherwise formal occasion. They'd also make a great addition to an anniversary cake for parents who have started to take themselves a little too seriously. Y'see? Wedding sites can be helpful for real life, too!

This beautiful green and gold cake by Superfine Bakery, for example, was perfect for a Great Gatsby-themed wedding, as featured on Green Wedding Shoes. Gatsby has been really big - in weddings, fancy-dress parties and good old-fashioned celebrations - since the Baz Luhrmann film was released last year, but more traditional couples have gone for black and gold in their interpretations of the theme. We love this emerald-green version - and wouldn't it be a great nod to Irish heritage (or just a love of Return to Oz)?

This is a little bit of a does-what-it-says-on-the-tin deal: this cake sure is elegant! We're big fans of the tonal effect of the white ribbon and lace details on the buttery colored cake by Simply Elegant Cakes; it's not gonna be a super-loud "wow" moment, but understated elegance is under-rated in our books - and never more appropriate than at a wedding.

Okay, so cake pops aren't exactly new news - remember that time Blake Lively baked cake pops with Bakerella? - but they're still super-cute and, duh, totally sweet! These bride'n'groom cake pops from Sugar & Spice are a great option for adding a little fun to your reception without compromising on having that elegant, minimalist cake you've dreamed of. Or, by that same token, complementing them with a super-cute cartoon cake!

We truly believe in saving the most off-the-wall shots for last at Dreamwedding - and this Kenzo-inspired cake by Charm City Cakes West in LA well and truly knocked our socks off! Have you ever seen anything quite so show-stopping? Granted, this haute couture confection won't be for everyone, but it just had to be included in a list of quirky cakes! We'd like to imagine the couple who'd go for this number would be really into fashion, very clued in but don't take themselves too seriously. Leandra and her permanfriend, maybe?
