foo!
Posting from my dorm at CMU. julian is right across from me, and it's rather late. More later, I suppose -- I'm somewhat overwhelmed right now.
I post this from the computer the good folks at work gave to me as a going away present, the night before I leave for Carnegie Mellon. My emotions are legion.
First post from my new sony vaio r505 -- wireless! Yeah, baby! Yes, I saw Austin Powers 3 last night, and didn't like it nearly as much as the first two. It was relatively short, but it felt so long... Anyway, I was pretty bummed when i arrived home with my new laptop and a new router/switch/wireless access point to use as the main connection to the cablemodem instead of the machine I'll be taking to school, and found out that the cable net connection had gone down mysteriously. Because other people need to use the phone, I couldn't stay on the phone with ultimately unhelpful tech support people who claimed they needed to rehash /everything/ in the first tiers of support before they'd let me talk to somehone helpful.. when i finally got that, he told me to just unplug everything and wait. Apparently, the modem was being very stubborn about who it recognized as connected to it -- that is, in recognizing nothing at all. Because of all the wonderful time I spent on hold, I was finally able to type my roommate for this fall, Rahul, a decent email describing (so far) my family.
So I come downstairs now before work to just check it out, and yippee. I've yet to see how far I can roam around with the laptop and maintain decent signal strength, but hopefully it'll be at least to the hammock in the back yard :)
As for the r505e, only two things bother me now -- the sizes of teh right shift and tab keys. Other than those tiny ones, the rest of the keyboard is just as hard as any other laptop's for me to type on. WRT the rest of the system, I haven't been able to do anything yet. Seems the internal minipci card is an orinoco, which should have decent support. Will look into slapping linux on here after a repartition/windows reinstall and we'll go from there.
This is fun, this no-wires business.
