Elephant beer is a strong, Bock-type lager named after the beasts depicted on the imposing columns of the Danish giant's historic Copenhagen brewery. I'm not entirely convinced, however, that this example, purchased at Safeway supermarket in the UK, actually left through those gates, since although it claims to be imported, it also carries the legend 'brewed and bottled *for* the Carlsberg breweries'. It has a very intense, sharply herbal hop aroma with a very slightly unpleasant enzymic "rotting meat" note and a distinct whiff of alcohol. The head is only temporary, the colour mid-golden, and it has a full and slightly fruity taste with estery nail-varnish notes and considerable bitterness, almost like a bitter liqueur. The pronounced carbonation gives a creamy texture, and the beer dries rapidly, staying very dry to the mouth-filling herbal hop finish. An intense beer where sweetness is well-counterbalanced by hoppy dryness but there are some unpleasant, artificial notes in there too, and at this strength it could do with a bit more character. Tho it is twice the price of American malt liquor,it has a much better taste. If your objective is to get a quick buzz without the nasty taste, this is a way to go. About $1.15 or so a bottle. I get sixers for $6.80 tax included.

It was great until Labatts started trying to brew it a few years ago in Canada... Result? Tastes bitter and is nowhere near as good or potent as the original thing from Carlsberg. Shame. They ruined a great thing.

It is still available in France and I managed to clean out one hypermarket so I guess I have just cornered the market in the remaining Elephant beer in the World!! No reason has been given by Carlsberg why they have withdrawn this superb stuff. I will just have to make my 30 odd bottles and cans last I guess!

Elephant probably the beer that Carlsberg could claim the epiphet "probably the best lager in the world". Back in '88 the purser on DFDS ferries was prepared to sell it to passengers duty free (24 can cases, pantry -> car boot) otherwise high duty makes it exhorbitant in either state. Sold on draught in Denmark, but few will manage more than a single litre jug.

We've been able to confirm that Carlsberg Elephant beer tastes best when drunk within the aural context of a particular tone (650 Hz.) and that varying the pitch even only slightly renders the brew almost undrinkable.

Sweet and 'thick' for a lager, but easily drinkable - too easy!
Last time I had some of this was the night before my wedding back in 1996 and that was a six pack I picked up at the airport (I'd bought the booze and had it in my room!) and that was from the duty free at Gatwick, I've only ever seen it once before in MK and that was in Oddbins way before I got married.

I visited the brewery in Copenhagen when I was in college and got drunk on my ass on elephant beer. They have huge stone statues of elephants at the brewery entrance. They bring you a cart of all the brews, elephant only being one of them, they are all strong and delicious! TRY SOME.

in columbus, ohio, the majestic elephant (canadian-brewed) was yanked from shelves mid-2004. by december, it had been replaced by cold sixes allegedly imported from copenhagen. however, the beer behind the beast is hardly the quality treat i remember: alas, it tastes like a pitiful pilsner.

This is also my all time favourite beer - especially with a ruby!
It's perfect for knocking back with a few courses of sag aloo, bangalore phaal, the works. Normal gassy beer just bloats you. The 'Indian' beers like Cobra are not strong enough. Elephant is just right - it leaves enough room in the tum to pile in the curry, yet is strong enough to not get lost and so you still get a merry buzz!
I can't drink regular 4/5% with a curry it just bloats me. Sadly my favourite ever curry house lost my custom back in 1997 when they changed management and stopped selling elephant :(
...and now nowhere seems to sell it :(
Perhaps making a half and half with Carlsberg Export and Carlsberg Special Brew would amount to the same thing? :)

Elephant is an acquired taste, some might say that is true of beer in general. Anyway, this beer is one of those brews that makes giving up drinking hard, mainly because it's smooth but also kicks your butt!
Even the price tag in New York isn't a deterrant, all beer is expensive here.

The Elephant beer is, like most of the products from Carleberg, highly overestimated. In Denmark you will find lots and lots of local brewers that better deserve their places on the market. The EB has a strong and unpleasant alcohol and cemical taste. Only for soccer huligans...

Finding import beer in the UK can be a real pain in the ASS. I am an American who lives in the Northwest but I lived in Oxfordshire for 12 mos and have been to the UK 6 times aside. I am a real ale afficiando but one thing that struck me about the UK was that most of the continental brews that I enjoyed in the US were brewed under 'contract' in the UK. I found this maddening since I was so close to this great pilsners but had to drink some half-assed approximation brewed by Whitbread or whomever. Of course the bitter more than made up for this, but still it was frustrating.

Paul, perhaps you are correct. I was at an ABC store (usa) and they had this wonderful brew on the shelf. It was being advertised as "NEW". The sign is what drew my attention to it. I remember this beer from my student days. It was the cheep beer in the student bar, and as such was drunk lots. I wouldn't rate it as a particularly good beer, but when you're on a shoestring budget it's better than staying sober.

Beware! I was delighted to see Elephant beer in Sainsburys so naturally I bought some. If you remember this excellent beer from the late 80's it had strength with a sublime aftertaste, this one is just as strong without the quality taste. After contacting Carlsberg UK they confirmed that this re-launch version is brewed in the UK. Im proud to be British and we are good at lots of things but brewing lager in not one of them. The label on the bottle is a bit of a give away, although it says brewed in the EU, Northampton is in the EU and if they were bringing it all the way from Copenhagen I'm quite sure the word Imported would also appear, it does not. Looks like an E-type, drives like a Mondeo. Well it was too good to be true.

This has been one of my favorite beers for over 25 years. I have gone though long periods without finding it. I have just found it again after a four year absence, but god damn, it's almost $9.00 a six pack. Rest easy Tom they only use really bad elephants. That's what accounts for the "rotting meat" note.

This is the first beer since Tui that has me saying "Wow!". Elephant is seriously an eye opener to what DE beer is really like.

just got a crate of elephant beer in jjs in glasgow and its class. fuity full flavour and a strong but bitter aftertaste makes it a quality above the rest. at 7.2% a crate should have me nicely drunk. muchos love elephant beer.

Hi, I'm from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and I've been living in South Florida for the past 5 years. I've searched high and low for this beer (which is so in demand home)here and can't seems to find it anywhere. I always have to end up taking a trip back home and bringing them in bulks. If there's anyone who know where you can find Elephant in South Florida please share your info. Thanks in advance!

I must say, I had some of this stuff some 20 years ago and didn't care for it at all at the time. To me it was way to sweet secondary to the high EtOH level and under hopped wit a strange rotten fruit after taste. But after reading all these folks who apparently have raging wood over it I think I will try it again. I saw some 1/2 litre cans the other day at a discount store for 3.99 for a 4 pack. I'll have to give it a try but will probably hate it again and it'll be another 20 years until my next one LOL.

Had my first here in Virginia and went back to buy some more and they were out. Not cheap, but a good beer with a kick that tends to creep up on you!

I found a legitimately-Danish bottle at a village store in New Hampshire, USA. Very much an acquired taste. I must say, I love English beers (particularly ESB's), but I can't say I see what all you Britons see in this one.

It's the Dog's Bollocks! There is no beer to match it! Reviewer "Des de Moor" is a Bore! Rotting meat? One can only imagine where he usually eats if he knows this smell. His review is nonsense, and you should try the beer for yourself, you'll be amazed at how great is is. Especially if living in the US, where the only bottled mass produced alternative at a good price is water!
