Welcome! You've arrived at award-winning author Marcel Gagné's personal Website. I am the author of the "Moving to Linux" series of books, a regular columnist for several tech magazines, a public speaker, radio and television personality, and a well known voice in the Linux and open source universe. I created the famous (perhaps infamous) Cooking With Linux which ran for ten years in the Linux Journal. I'm also a published science fiction author and editor, a onetime Editor in Chief, a pilot, a former Top 40 disc jockey, and I fold a mean origami T-Rex.  This site is home to my insights, opinions, gripes, brags, tech stuff, and whatever else comes to mind when I have the time or the inclination to publish it.

Deconstructing Consistent Hashing With Yaws

I'm proud to announce that my latest research paper, "Deconstructing Consistent Hashing With Yaws", has finally been published. Here's a snap of the front page, with the names of my co-auteurs clearly visible and attributed.

Donald Trump Bugged My Phone

Many people today have told me that Donald Trump has bugged their phones.

My Linux Nightmare

Let me tell you about a Linux nightmare I woke up from this morning.

Turing Test Failure

Yesterday, I had a weird Turing moment.

The Death of Capitalism

I've been listening to a fascinating discussion regarding the death of capitalism on CBC's "Ideas" program. I'm only about half way through it, but the subject matter is important and somewhat unsettling.

"My God Is better than your God" is going to get us all killed.

"My God is better than your God" is going to get us all killed.

Enjoy a chilling bedtime story!

Cooking With Linux : AI Revisited

The tech futurists have made their annual predictions and I hear that 2017 is going to be the year of the AI virtual assistant. You know . . . Alexa, Google Home, and Zuckerberg's Jarvis. Chatbots are also on the agenda, appearing everywhere from messaging apps like Kik or Allo to Google's new Pixel assistant.

Cooking With Linux : Back when we were enemies

As 2016 draws to a close, we go back to a time when Microsoft and Linux are the best of enemies. This is a time when we make jokes about Microsoft being an evil empire, and Bill Gates was the Borg.

Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, salacious Saturnalia, and a Happy New Year!

Cooking With Linux #8 : Come Rescue Me!

It's the tail end of 2016 and Microsoft now loves Linux, though many would argue otherwise. That's not what this post is about so that discussion will have to on without me right now. However, Linux has been Windows' friend for a lot of years now. Many times over the last two decades, I've used Linux boot disks, not specifically to run a Linux desktop or server, but to repair a Windows system.
