Happy Birthday, Jarren Benton!
Today, Oct. 26, is 34th the birthday of Georgia-bred rapper Jarren Benton.
Starting his rap career in Atlanta, Benton credits OutKast, Goodie Mob and Ludacris as some of his many influences. Benton started dropping mixtapes in 2009 and by 2012 caught the attention of California MC Hopsin, who had started his own label, Funk Volume. Jarren signed to Funk Volume in 2012 and released a mixtape called Freebasing with Kevin Bacon the same year. In June 2013, Benton followed that up with the release of his debut studio album off Funk Volume, My Grandma’s Basement. Building buzz and a consistent discography landed Benton the fan-voted “tenth spot” on XXL’s Freshman class in 2014.
In 2015, Benton dropped an EP, Slow Motion Vol 1, and embarked on a cross country tour with his former Funk Volume labelmates, Hopsin, Dizzy Wright and DJ Hoppa. When Funk Volume dissolved in early 2016 due to Hopsin and Damian Ritter, Benton pushed on to drop his Slow Motion Vol. 2 mixtape in July
