Aamir Khan's 2016 blockbuster Dangal broke several box office records with its staggering global earnings. While Indian Express quoted the figure Rs 1,848 crore in the first week of June, Koimoi.com stated that it made Rs 1,983.34 crore on 21 June. It made Rs 542.34 crore gross in the domestic box office. The major push that the movie received was from its Rs 1,200 crore earnings from China alone, where it is the highest grossing non-Hollywood import.
Last week, Forbesreported that Dangal was the first Hindi film to make Rs 2,000 crore, which it called a 'milestone in cinema'. It also called the film the fifth highest non-English grosser globally, and 30th in the overall list of films made across the world.
It now appears that the Aamir-starrer's collections are marginally lower, as clarified by the film's spokesperson. "We have been reading a lot of reports saying that Dangal has crossed 2,000 crores worldwide. Just to set the record straight, we want to clarify that Dangal's official worldwide gross collection figure as of Thursday is Rs 1,864 crore," said the spokesperson.
Still, the film has many credits to its name, including replacing Aamir Khan's own PK (Rs 340.8 crore) and Salman Khan's Sultan (Rs 300.45 crore), only defeated by Baahubali 2's Hindi version. Dangal continues to rake in money from China, where it was released with the title Shuai Jiao Baba. Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala recently tweeted that the film has earned $191.03 million gross in the land of the dragon.
