So I finally got around to skating on a college campus, hence, with all sorts of traffic, and I realised that I don't really have the best brake vocabulary. All I really know of is the good 'ol "drag a foot" thing [which wears wheels down like no other] and a hockey stop [not good in a crowd of people or on the dime]. What are some other braking methods that are out there for those of us with brakeless skates?

what i do is get real low, then take my right skate and put it in front of me, turn it sideways and jam it into the street in front of me. it makes the shape of a T if you do it right ther vertical part of the T is my left foot and the horazontl par of my right foot. if your going really fast u may slide a few inches before u stop, but if not then u should stop imediatly.

Trying learning some grinds that involve using the sides of your skates like a Fahrvergnügen. This type of grind can actually be practiced on flat ground. You can slide just a bit on the sides to slow down a little, and then come up to your wheels sideways to stop quickly.

pat29phil, couldn't you potentially trip, since the horizontal skate is in front? I do that, but only when im going slow.
Another way, is to turn you skates toward each other, like on skis, but just a few degrees. only a teeny-tiny bit. Then, put pressure on BOTH feet. It'll slow u down pretty good. But your skates will force themselves toward each other, so sometimes you gotta seperate ur feet again and do it again.

Thanks for all your help, guys. I've tried the cess slide deal, and that works on some surfaces - but on smoother concrete, my skates slide too much. I'm gonna start working on the Fahrvergnügen too.
