Mathieu Roy was born August 10, 1983 in St-Georges, Quebec. The seventh round, 215th overall selection of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Roy is a graduate of the QMJHL's Val d'Or Foreurs.
A solid defenseman with offensive skill, Roy played four seasons in Val d'Or registering 77 points (19-58-77) before splitting his first professional season between the ECHL's Columbus Cottonmouths and the AHL's Toronto Roadrunners in 2003-04.
In 2004-05, Roy and the Roadrunners moved to Edmonton and in his first full season in the AHL registered 25 points (3-22-25) before going on to make his NHL debut with the Oilers in 2005-06.
In July of 2009, after failing to appear in a single NHL game the previous season, Roy would sign a two-way contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
On March 3, 2010, the NHL trade deadline, Roy was traded to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Matt Rust.
