Fun for a few weeks, but . . .
Although the game is repetitive, which is the nature of this type of game, it's fun - at least for a few weeks. Pros include graphics, solid online connection, and events. The cons are what you would expect in a "free" game. There's a long wait time to upgrade equipment and mechs (it quickly escalates to over a day) and the purchase prices are unreasonable. Lastly, matching inevitably puts you against players with much more powerful mechs, which can create unbalanced conflicts; admittedly, though, you can still be competitive in matches like these. Long story short, I played for a few weeks - maybe a month - and I enjoyed myself. However, limitations within the game caused by the "free" model ultimately turned the game into a grind that reflected limited progression.
A bit about "free" game pricing models ... Some people yell about the so-called greed of publishers, etc. I don't. I've invested money into a few free games when I felt that the investment was worth it. Unfortunately, when the cost exceeds the benefit, which is the case in many "free" games, including this one, then I'm not willing to pay.
The gameplay is solid, simple enough that it's easy to pick up, but there's still a bit of strategy to it. There's only one game mode and the combat is pretty basic. There's 4 different currencies, all of which correspond to specific items, and if you want something you will have to grind for it. Once you hit level 20 (which took me about a week) the 4th currency unlocks and all the end game items unlock. The end game items can only be purchased with the 4th currency, but you don't get any to start with. So you can't use any of the end game items until you grind this 4th currency which you can't even begin grinding until level 20. By that point I was already bored of the repetitive gameplay, but it's fun every now and then.
The un-strategy game.
For us whom like player vs. player games, we like the strategy part of playing a game. However, War Robots has removed the strategy from the game by rewarding players by how much damage they do. That means if I camp by my spawn and do damage I win league points win or lose. The problem with this is that many average players think that way. Therefore getting beacons isn't in their best interest unless they worry about their win ratio. I play for the close games but, if I lose to higher up players, and don't do much damage I lose -22 league/tier points. In a close game no one should lose that many points. Until Pixtronics comes up with a way to calculate league points. I cannot give them a good review.
