Critic Consensus: Ozark hasn't yet reached the same level as the classic crime dramas to which it will inevitably be compared, but its satisfyingly complex plot - and a gripping performance from Jason Bateman - suggest greater potential.

Netflix's new crime drama is a slow burn with great performances but it's saddled with a script that doesn't match the calibre of its talented actors.
Now that's how you make a thriller.
Ozark has the potential to be many interesting things, and the fact that it commits to none of them feels like overextension.
Bateman strikes the right mixture of guilt, terror and glib intelligence to make us reluctantly root for him.
A lot of this would play more thrillingly if the characters didn't seem as wooden; if the series felt like it was written to serve more than just a need to present power plays.
The main reason why Ozark, the new Netflix series, feels so underpowered has to do with its star, Jason Bateman (who also directs): a good actor who badly wants for charisma, he simply can't carry it alone.
