The Plataians

Battle of Marathon

Athenian soros

2011 will mark the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, possibly the most pivotal military event of the ancient world.

Our parent organization, Hoplologia, is planning to help recreate the battle, and indeed the entire world of late Archaic Greece. We hope to march from Plataia to Marathon, camp, and recreate the life of the citizen-hoplite—and his family! Ideally, we hope to have between thirty and sixty members in kit in Greece to mark the day.

If you would like to participate, visit the event website for more information and a registration form.

Staging a major reenactment of such an important event takes tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of people in a tight organization and Hoplologia is trying to help the Government of Greece put that package together for Marathon. If you'd like to help, with anything from a donation of time or money to a desire to cover the event in media, please contact us, and feel welcome to join the discussion of the event at the Hoplologia discussion board.

Raven of ApolloShow your support of the Marathon event with the purchase of a handmade sterling silver shield, which comes either as a pin or a pendant. They are about 1/2 inch in diameter and have the Raven of Apollo etched onto the surface. They are made by Aurora Simmons, a professional jeweler and member of the Company of Plataians. All proceeds from the sale of these items goes to support the Marathon reenactment in Greece.
