Celebrating 50 Years: Woodstock Art Gallery Presents 50 Works over 50 Weeks

Joseph Bryson, from Woodstock, Ontario, studied at Sheridan College, Fanshawe College, and Ontario College of Art and Design, where he graduated in 1980, and remained as a photography instructor and technician until 1989. Bryson’s photographs capture a unique view of urban scenes, allowing him to exhibit his work across Canada and the United States, in both group and solo shows. This featured photograph, Pole and Silo, is part of a collection of 148 photographs from Bryson’s portfolio, A Different Light. These scenes were taken across Canada between 1979 and 1983. The photographs in this portfolio were captured with infrared film, adding a look of decay and beauty to the subjects and landscapes that surround us. These photographs portray a monumental environment where it is normally seen as ordinary. By infusing his work with this unique look, Bryson is able to grab the viewer’s attention and imagination.
