DICE has revealed that future games using the Frostbite 2.0 engine may only run on PCs with a 64-bit operating system.
The engine's rendering architect, Johan Andersson, spoke out on Twitter, indicating that a 64-bit OS will be needed to run the studio's games in 2013.
"We'll have Frostbite-powered games in 2013 that will _require_ a 64-bit OS. If you are on 32-bit, great opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8," he wrote.
The Frostbite 2.0 engine has become increasingly common in games published by Electronic Arts. Last year's Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed: The Run both made use of the engine.
It is also being used in upcoming titles, including Medal of
Rumors have also indicated that Army of Four and the next Dragon Age title will make use of the engine.
The shift could force many players to upgrade their computers, as it will require both a 64-bit version of Windows and a computer with a 64-bit processor to run on. Currently, less than half of PC owners have a system with a 64-bit operating system.
