Twin Oaks Community is an intentional community in rural central Virginia made up of around 90 adult members and 15 children. Since the community's beginning in 1967, their way of life has reflected their values of cooperation, sharing, nonviolence, equality, and ecology. Twin Oaks Community does not have a group religion or central leader. They govern themselves by a form of democracy with shared responsibilities. They are self-supporting economically, and partly self-sufficient. Each member works 42 hours a week in the community's business and domestic areas. Each member receives housing, food, healthcare, and personal spending money from the community. Twin Oaks Hammocks generates most of their outside income along with several new ventures. Less than half of their work goes into income-producing activities with the balance spent on milking cows, gardening, cooking, and childcare. Twin Oaks hammocks are hand-crafted by community members from a variety of fabrics including hemp and recycled polyester. They are very durable and Twin Oaks will repair damaged hammocks as well. They offer free shipping to the contiguous 48 US states. Twin Oaks Seed Farm grows open-pollinated and heirloom vegetable seeds on six acres of certified organic land. They produce seeds for several small retail seed companies.
