We are trained to provide care, not to check passports. In a survey that we have conducted in Manchester - to be published today - only 21% of healthcare professionals felt confident even defining words like refugee and asylum seeker. Only 26% correctly identified eligibility criteria for primary care, and a worrying 32% failed to correctly identify eligibility criteria for emergency care.
We began the filming the day before the atrocious Manchester Arena attack and Katie and I watched the shocking footage together. At that point Katie had mixed feelings about whether she should continue. We had a discussion and we both felt that we should not let terrorism defeat us and stop us in our tracks.
Every week the Tories stay in power means more people face wage cuts, deeper inequality and higher levels of poverty. So it's more vital than ever to keep hitting the Labour doorstep and build workplace and community opposition to failed austerity.
As someone with Spina Bifida and a wheelchair user, I felt my first two foster families saw me purely through my disability. I remember one day I was eating dinner with my carer, and she just stared at me, when I looked at her she asked: "Did you have polio or something?". That memory has stuck with me.
The regular smears about Islam or Muslims by those in high offices and the sections of the mainstream media and the conflation of Islam with criminality must stop. There is a real danger that such prejudice will further stoke up anti-Muslim hatred and provide fuel for an already growing number of acts of violence against the Muslim community across the UK.
In light of David Lammy's investigation into diversity at Oxbridge, I've been added to four separate group chats titled "Oxford is racist." This is on top of the seven with similar titles that I am already a member of, some of which have existed well before I even began studying here.
It's time that our government stopped selectively condemning humanitarian disasters and applied diplomatic pressure on their Saudi ally. Pressure needs to be applied to negotiate a truce while lifting the blockade to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered. Basic rights to life, food and decent living need to be upheld universally.
This game served as a larger metaphor of both these teams' fortunes: Arizona an ageing team that has missed its Super Bowl window and sits, legs dangling, looking down over the precipice of a major breakdown and rebuild, while Los Angeles carve out a persona of a fresh, young, fast team on the rise.
I know a lot of people who felt intimidated by trying to say the right thing when they found out I had cancer. Most people are well-intentioned and will say things that they think are harmless or maybe even positive, when sometimes they aren't. For this post, I have collaborated with other cancer fighters and survivors in giving our accounts of things that people said to us during treatment that we wish they didn't.
Guilt is such an awful feeling. We all feel guilty at some point in our lives. I feel it everyday when I look at my daughter playing. I ask myself: Why wasn't I able to be there for her in the beginning? Why did I have to have a traumatic birth? Why do I have a mental illness?
We intend to award grants to the most innovative and impactful local collaborations between the NHS, wider public and voluntary sector to support the development of these services. At the same time we will continue to invest in other core NHS mental health services as part of our ambition to treat one million more people by 2020/21. There may be no magic bullet to stem the rising tide of mental ill health - but these initiatives show there is a huge amount that can be done to make a real difference.
During nearly 13 years in frontline of Emergency Ambulance work I have suffered a number of assaults - some physical most verbal. I am not what most people may perceive to be the classic victim of assault, six-foot-tall male, weighing over 15 stone, a former military man. However, this is perhaps an example of the seemingly indiscriminate nature of abuse my colleagues in the NHS and other public services have to endure while protecting the public.
At present, non-subscription streaming sites like YouTube fall under what's call the "safe harbour" legislation which means they are not held responsible for user-generated content or uploaded content they host. The result is that YouTube pays an unacceptably low amount for the music enjoyed by its one billion users. That simply has to change.
I was 25 when a married executive producer took my hand and tried to talk me back to his hotel room. He was a big deal in Hollywood. I was his young, ambitious production coordinator, who also happened to be a long way from home.
This is not a party-political issue, it's a topic that affects us all. That's why I am so pleased we are working together across party lines to protect these remarkable individuals. We need to make this kind of behaviour a taboo in our society and tougher sentences for those who carry out these despicable attacks sends the clearest possible message that they will not be tolerated.
Human attitudes are constantly subject to revision through experience and, more importantly, conscious choice. Biases can be modified and eradicated on the basis of experience and motivation, and stereotypes can be changed when people are motivated to think about someone, in any way, as a member of their own group. We are all one people.
But the fact is, sexual assault IS ubiquitous in the gay scene. So normal has it been in my experience to be treated as a sexual object by other gay men, I rarely questioned it. I've even thought I should've felt flattered by it, that is it was desirable - laughing it off despite the sick feeling in my stomach, or the sense of disgust that comes with your bodily integrity being violated.
I'm a man, and I'm not confused. (Nor am I a paragon of virtue, but we'll come to that later.) So, in an attempt to be helpful to my fellow males, and to even up the balance a bit after a deluge of articles about 'what women should do about sexual abuse in the workplace', here are my thoughts about what men should do instead.
How do we effectively support people sleeping rough away from the streets for good? Even with the Homelessness Reduction Act set to come into force in April 2018, giving councils greater duties to prevent and end people's homelessness, it's a question that won't be simply resolved anytime soon.
My stage name is Cinnamon Cheeks. The feeling I get from being on stage and the confidence I now have in my body is incredible. I am a plus-size disabled girl. To stand on stage and take all if your clothes off being a fully-abled body takes guts, so imagine how I feel doing it when only one arm works and my moves are limited.
Islamic values are not very different from British values. As a teacher I try my utmost to ensure my pupils gain British values and become good citizens of the UK. Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths is part of the British values.
Mothering the mother is a phrase often heard during pregnancy and birth. Look after the mother, care for her, support her emotional needs ... and she will feel more empowered to grow, birth and care for her baby. A phrase (and actions) that makes so much sense and is seen in many cultures across the world.
