Parliament in Session. MEPs to debate defence of media in wake of Maltese journalist murder

MEPs will debate the protection of journalists and the defence of media freedom on Tuesday evening, following the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. 

Earlier in the day, the plenary observed a minute’s silence, in the presence of Ms Caruana Galizia’s family, and President Antonio Tajani announced that the European Parliament’s Strasbourg press confernece room will be named after Ms Caruana Galizia.

Council President Donald Tusk discussed with MEPs the outcome of the 19-20 October meeting of European leaders, which focussed on migration and asylum, defence, and the Brexit negotiations.

President Tusk also briefed MEPs on first reactions and deliberations among heads of states or government on different scenarios for the future of Europe.
Parliament in Session. Minute’s silence for victims of forest fires in Portugal and Spain

EP President Antonio Tajani commemorated those who died in recent forest fires in Portugal and Spain and Hurricane Ophelia in Ireland, at the opening of the session in Strasbourg.


The fires are very worrying, said President Tajani, with 750 000 hectares burnt across Europe this year; more than 100 people have lost their lives in Portugal alone. An EU civil protection service must be urgently put in place to help communities in the event of an emergency.
