About the Yale Daily News

Founded January 28, 1878, the Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper. The News now publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year and serves the communities of Yale University and New Haven, Connecticut. In addition to the daily newspaper, the News publishes WEEKEND, a Friday supplement with reviews and articles about arts and culture, Sports Monday, a Monday section providing expanded, in-depth sports coverage, and the Yale Daily News Magazine. The News also publishes several special-occasion issues every year, including the Harvard-Yale Game issue, the Freshman issue and the Commencement issue.

The News is produced by a very dedicated, all-volunteer undergraduate staff. Most of our reporters are first years and sophomores, while the managing board is mainly comprised of juniors.

The News is the primary division of the Yale Daily News Publishing Co., which is headed by the News’ editor in chief & president.

The Yale Daily News Publishing Company

A student business team operates the News, and is assisted by a full-time general manager, Gina Marsh. Ms. Marsh is available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., to answer questions about advertising in or subscribing to the News. Questions about back issues or copies of articles should be directed to the authors of those stories you wish to obtain.

The Yale Daily News is free to all on-campus students at Yale University. The News is the only way for students and faculty members to get campus news on a timely basis, and it is widely read by undergraduates, graduate students, faculty members and administrators.

Contact Gina Marsh in the business office by email or telephone at (203) 432-2424.

People who do not live on campus – or are not students at Yale – can subscribe to the News. With a U.S. postal subscription, each week’s issues will be sent as a package on Friday via Priority Mail; be aware, though, that it may take a few days to reach addresses outside of New Haven. For those on a budget or those interested in receiving only a single edition of the paper each week, the News offers its Week In Review edition, a single edition of the paper featuring only the week’s top stories. The Week in Review is mailed each Monday via first-class mail. To subscribe, click here, and then print, fill out, and mail or fax the subscription form.

Joining the Yale Daily News

Any member of the Yale College community can join the News’ staff, a process known traditionally as “heeling.” Heeling generally takes one semester, after which the student is invited to become a member of the News’ staff. Students can join the news as reporters, columnists, photographers, designers, copy editors or business associates. Each desk has its own heeling requirements that ensure that everyone who joins the News’ staff receives appropriate training and understands the professional and ethical standards of the News. The time commitment necessary to be a staff member depends entirely on the interest and availability of the staffer, and the News is always looking for student volunteers interested in contributing to the paper.

Traditionally, freshmen on the News work as general assignment reporters, and sophomore reporters are assigned to a particular topic, or beat, which they focus on for an entire year. The managing board is composed of juniors, with the exception of some production and photography positions which are filled by exemplary sophomores. However, the News welcomes staffers from all years – opportunities are always available.

If you are interested in joining the editorial side of the News as a reporter, contact the editor in chief. If you are interested in joining as a designer, photographer or copy editor, contact the appropriate desk editor. If you are interested in becoming a business staffer, contact the the publisher. If you are interested in working on the Web site, please contact the editor in chief.
