Tan Kin Lian says he will not drop out of race

Former NTUC Income Chief Tan Kin Lian refuted rumours that he might withdraw from the race to be Singapore's president.

The presidential hopeful said on his blog that he will file his nomination papers on Wednesday, Aug 17.

The 63-year-old was responding to a Straits Times report which said he might drop out of the race to avoid splitting the 'non-establishment' vote.

Mr Tan said, at two separate events yesterday, that he is open to a discussion to reduce the number of candidates for the contest and is flexible if the situation calls for it.

According to The Straits Times, after his walkabout at Ghim Moh, he told reporters that the chance of him stepping down is very small and that nothing is cast in stone.

At a rally at Speakers' Corner yesterday, Mr Tan said that he believes the race will remain a four-cornered fight as other potential candidates have said they will not withdraw from the race.

The four candidates are Mr Tan Kin Lian, Mr Tan Jee Say, Dr Tan Cheng Bock and Dr Tony Tan.
