A plea to the wireless subscribers of Canada... by mofozeroin canada

[–]robjob08 0 points1 point ago

Definitely not, plans have gone up with the limiting of the length of phone contracts but you can still negotiate. From what I understand, most of the employees at the stores don't have the ability to change them but if you call bell to negotiate a plan you can get terms changed.

I'm probably going to be an outlier here but I have a contract with bell and it's worked great for me. I negotiated 6gb of data for 25$ a month and pay a total of 47 per month. I get a new phone every 1.5 years and the price of selling my old one almost covers my new one. Bell has never been anything great. Both my mom and my sister have the same plan just without data for 22 a month. It is a pretty old legacy plan though.

Agreed, most of the provinces just keep the paltry amount of money on their balance sheet as a low interest loan. What is that worth? 500k times by the interest rate to the power of 5 = pathetic.

why bother buying a house? by viciousbitein personalfinance

This is an INCREDIBLY simplistic view of things. Take into account opportunity cost, property taxes, maintenance, and new purchases. The economics of a home are not as good the they seem. It really depends on your area and what the rental versus owning market is like.

They were always be growing pains with a new product. I'm definitely not a fan of some of the features they have added especially the change in animations for moving cells. It adds nothing to the functionality, only the look. The upside about the subscription based service is as the product continues to grow updates will be constant and you won't have to pay for an entire revamp of your system. This will help keep firms updated instead of using products 10 years behind because the capital costs are too huge. I think their new model has huge potential.

There is no 'investment thesis' in what I am saying. I'm not arguing the OP's point I am simply saying that virtually no one in industry uses google docs because they, simply put, lack any functionality whatsoever. Office 365 enterprise actually has fairly decent cloud services. I can only hope they will continue to improve.

I'm sorry? What investment work do you do where you use google spreadsheets? I am in engineering and any self-respecting firm spends the money and gets the best program available and frankly that is excel.

I'm just curious. Have you used Office 365? I have never bought a piece of software in my life and trying it out for a month convinced me. Combined with skydrive it is a pretty awesome product. Google docs are pathetic for power users. Have you tried to use their spreadsheet program? If they get their sharing up to scratch in skydrive, it will be a major competitor. I currently run everything through skydrive and have my movies and music on my desktop.

I'm a little confused. A short squeeze puts upward pressure on a stock.... by requiring those who shorted the stock to cover their position by purchasing stock.

Wow just wow, first of all stocks are not 'trains'. At least you have only lost 25%, do you do any research on your stocks? Tesla and twitter are two completely different industries. Find an industry/sector that you are knowledgable about or understand and research the shit out of it. Play around with some stock simulation programs and see how you do.

Just FYI one of the reasons geothermal works so well is the water weight going downwards from the top balances the weight of the water going upwards and thus actually requires minimal energy to cycle.

TD redeeming 18.8M preferred shares - is this a good thing? by Roastpuppyin investing

[–]robjob08 0 points1 point ago

I get you. I know how how their prices fluctuate. I just thought you were suggesting that somehow preferred stock moved with the common stock price. All good.

TD redeeming 18.8M preferred shares - is this a good thing? by Roastpuppyin investing

[–]robjob08 1 point2 points ago

It's not really a matter of how much of total shares they make up that determines how much they impact the EPS. Earnings per share or EPS is calculated after subtracting the payments for preferred dividends. EPS = (Profit - Preferred Dividends)/Weighted average common stock. If the required preferred dividends make up a significant portion of the profit the effect on EPS could be quite significant.

Correct me if I am wrong here but preferred shares do not rise and fall with the stock. They act more like bonds and move with a change in base interest rate. If the preferred share is callable, the call value is predetermined and not market determined. "It's good for preferred shareholders who may have bought under par" I don't think what you are saying makes sense.

I have no idea what you are getting at here. The fact you dismiss an entire sector of the financial industry with such ease makes me question your 'advice'. Some bond funds have returned 10-20% this year.
