First Base and Patron Capital have bought the former Amex headquarters in Brighton for a £100m mixed-use scheme providing new homes, workspace and convenience stores.

The proposed development of Amex House, a two acre site on Edward Street, will be First Base’s second project in Brighton and outside London after securing planning consent with Hyde earlier this year for 229 homes and flexible commercial space at Anston House.

The developer said it will now kick off a detailed stakeholder engagement programme meeting local residents, businesses, the council and interested parties to develop a scheme that responds to local need and ambition.

Since 2013 American Express has been operating from its newly built state-of-the art 1 John Street office (next to the former Amex House building).

Barry Jessup, director, First Base said: “We are pleased to partner with Patron Capital on this important site in Brighton. There is a fantastic opportunity to re-energise this quarter with much needed homes; modern spaces to do business and bring activity back to the street. We very much look forward to working with the local community and Brighton and Hove City Council to develop the plans.”
