Listen as Local Natives cover Kanye West’s ‘Ultralight Beam’

Band say they "need the prayer of peace & serenity now more than ever"

Local Natives have covered Kanye West‘s ‘Ultralight Beam’ as part of Spotify’s ‘Singles’ programme. The cover comes with a live rendition of ‘Fountain of Youth,’ from their latest record ‘Sunlit Youth’.

At the time of its release, ‘Sunlit Youth’ was said to complete a trilogy, beginning with 2010’s ‘Gorilla Manor’ and 2013’s ‘Hummingbird’. Guitarist Ryan Harn said of the album’: “A lot of the excitement in making this new album came from discovering how to make songs in different ways. You start thinking What do I want to hear?’ Forget about what we’ve done and what people expect.”

Announcing the Kanye West cover on Twitter, the band wrote; “We covered Ultralight Beam by Kanye for Spotify in July but need the prayer of peace & serenity now more than ever.” You can hear the cover below.

West was hospitalised last week, where he was taken to UCLA Medical Centre – when it was reported that he was suffering form ‘severe sleep deprivation’ and refused to go to hospital voluntarily, but had to be restrained for transport. Doctors diagnosed him with “temporary psychosis due to sleep deprivation and dehydration.”

West’s hospitalised came after a dramatic few weeks. He cancelled the remainder of his ‘Saint Pablo’ tour, after a concert in Sacramento where he controversially cut his set short after just 30 minutes following a lengthy tirade against Beyonce, claiming that her husband and West’s former friend and collaborator Jay Z had the means to have him killed. The ‘Gold Digger’ rap veteran also caused controversy and split opinion when he admitted that he ‘would have voted for Donald Trump’.

Lady Gaga, Pusha T, John Legend and Chance The Rapper are among the stars sending his best wishes to West this week following the news. Legend said he was “concerned” about the ‘Life of Pablo’ artist, while Chance sent “a very special prayer to my big brother, Kanye West”. Pusha T thanked West for the “endless opportunities you have brought to me”.
