Where There Is Frustration, There Is No Depression

If you think about it, if a person is frustrated, he’s not really depressed. Or if they are depressed, they are not all that depressed.

In that sense, frustration is a good sign in terms of mental health because it means that at least some positive processes are at work.

How do we know this?

Let us think for a moment about what frustration even is in the first place. Frustration occurs when one’s goals are not being met. But look at the word goals in that sentence. The existence of goals in any person is a good sign in terms of mental health. If you have goals, you are looking to the future, and you are probably looking to the future in a positive way. A frustrated person almost always wants things to get better. They dream of better days in the future or even present, and they are frustrated that they cannot reach this better life that they want. They are living a lousy life and they are not happy with it because they think they deserve better.

Sure a frustrated person is angry, but most frustrated people are so mad about their situation that they are usually trying whatever they can do to make things better. I would argue that most of the time these efforts simply fail, but they are commendable nonetheless. A frustrated person is frantically trying to improve their lives but they are running into what seem to be insurmountable roadblocks along the way. This angers the person as these walls are blocking the way to a better life.

The main thing is, if you are frustrated, you have not yet given up. A frustrated person by definition is not hopeless. They are angry that his hopes are being thwarted. At least they have some hopes!

The essence of depression is hopelessness. I have been around depressed people my whole life and hopelessness seems to be at the heart of most fairly serious depression. In fact, if you are not hopeless, I would argue that you cannot possibly be all that depressed. The depressed person has given up. They have surrendered. They are waving the white flag and saying it’s useless to try anymore. Generally they see no hope of things getting better in the future. This is usually a cognitive distortion or false belief but it is a belief that seems to be at the heart of nearly all depression.

I have seen cases of moderate depression or what might be called dysthymia or even Depressive Personality Disorder (which needs to be in the DSM by the way). The cases I have seen were simply lifelong low-level depressions that almost seemed to be more characterological than acquired.

That is, the low level depression seemed to be an essential aspect of their character or personality. It’s how they looked at the world. They thought this view is right, proper, and correct, as all personality disordered people feel this way. As such, they don’t want to change. The folks I have met with Depressive Personality Disorder had no desire whatsoever to change which once again speaks to Axis 2 Personality Disorder as opposed to Axis 1 acquired and symptomatic.

The essence of the worldview of the people I met with this condition was pessimism. It is not so much that they felt hopeless and they were not depressed enough to have given up. They got up every day and did everything that they had to do, but they simply did not have any notions that anything was going to get better in the future. The future always seemed lousy, no matter what. But they soldier on anyway, trudging doggedly into the darkness forever looming in front of them.

So we see that depressive states are characterized by either hopelessness (where serious, acquired and Axis 1 treatable) or pessimism. These people don’t really have any goals because they can’t see anything good in the future worth having any goals about. They are not frustrated because there’s nothing to be frustrated about. Sure, the world sucks as they see it, but this is how they expect the world to be so there is no frustrated desire to see a better way. The frustrated person dreams of a better future. The depressed person has no dreams of the future as they see nothing but darkness ahead.

This hopelessness is why depressives are so often suicidal. When you’ve given up all hope, why live another day? Why stick around? You don’t see any way out and you see nothing but horrible pain and misery ahead, sometimes decades of it. If nothing good is ever going to happen and you will live in horrific pain for the rest of your life, why not just take off? End it all. End the pain. Leave. Go bye bye.

I would argue that a frustrated person is rarely suicidal. However, frustration, pessimism and hopelessness are way stations on the road to a view of having a darkening future.

Frustration is the mildest stop along this road because although the future seems dark indeed, the frustrated person has at least some hope that there’s a glimmer out there somewhere, and this is why they paddle frantically against the riptide.

The next stop is probably pessimism. The pessimist does not really lack hope. Instead they just view the future as more of the same old crap. The hopeless person and the pessimistic person both see nothing good ahead, but the hopeless person has surrendered and is not going to even try anymore, while when the pessimist sees that morning light come streaming in and he gets up to do it again, to get it up again.

The pessimist is still going to try! And there is your difference. Obviously one can move forward along this Highway of Blackened Dreams as the rest stops get progressively worse and more dilapidated. Frustration can easily lead to pessimism and then on to hopelessness. And the pessimist surely can become hopeless. This progressions of gloom are going all the time, all over the world.

So it may appear that the frustrated person is suicidal, but really they are not. What you are seeing is a frustrated person whose frustration defenses are breaking down. They stop dreaming of a better world and conclude that there will be one. From there it is a short stop from soldiering on to giving up altogether.

So a person who appears highly frustrated becomes hopeless very quickly, or moves back and forth between frustration and hopeless. And as soon as frustration moves into hopelessness, the danger begins. A frustrated person can throw up their hands and become hopeless and in an hour grab a rope or a gun and walk off the abyss. But that would not have happened had the transitioned to hopelessness not occurred. In most cases, hopelessness is a necessary and sufficient factor in suicide.

One of the dangerous things about frustration is that it can head into pessimism and hopelessness pretty quickly. Frustration is probably a risk factor for hopelessness and depression. How long the frustration lasts before it gives in and caves is probably down to ego strength. A very strong ego always sees a brighter future, no matter how black things get.

They can tolerate an incredible amount of frustration for many years and they still glimpse the light in the distance, faint as it may be. Frustration is hard to take. It is a very unpleasant state as I can attest to. Many people probably have a limited ability to cope with desires that seemed to be thwarted with no end in sight. one truism of psychology is that most people hate to fail. In fact, they hate to fail so much that if they consistently fail at something, at some point they just say the Hell with it and quit.

The ego cannot tolerate endless failure. Personally, once I persistently fail at something, I generally just throw it in and say that I am not going to even attempt that task anymore. Hence, it is understandable why many people fail or drop out of school.

School’s no fun if you keep failing all of your assignments. Why stick around and continue to fail? The ego says forget it. Repeated frustration is very hard on the ego, and who can blame the ego for feeling this way. The ego’s task is to keep you from feeling like a loser. Repeated failure spells loser, loser, loser. Just give up already and preserve some ego strength!

A frustrated person is in a sense continuing to soldier on in the face of endless failure to achieve their goals. Since people hate to fail over and over (And who can blame them?), many people probably have little tolerance for frustration. Instead they may turn to drugs, drink or nihilism. If your goals are always being cockblocked, you can always just lower your goals.

At some point, you will probably have modest enough goals that your goals are pretty easy to meet. And here we meet the people who seem to be living what most would call lousy lives yet they have simply resigned to it, do not expect anything better and have zero expectations for the future. Yet they often seem fairly happy even though they have given up in a sense. They are now easily able to achieve their reduced goals and they killed their dreams of more long ago.

It is a cliche, but there is a place for everyone in this world. The key to life is finding that little place for yourself, calling it your own, killing your irrational dreams of achieving more, accepting your lot in life with philosophical recognition, and trying to wring some sort of happiness and satisfaction out whatever cards fate has contemptuously drawn for you.

And always remember that frustration is better than it sounds. Some hope is generally better than none.

Foreign Policy of the Alternative Left: Israel-Palestine Conflict and US Imperialism

We are not necessarily anti-Zionist, but I would say that the Alt Left is pretty disgusted by the behavior of the Israeli state, their ongoing settler-colonial project and the deplorable way they treat the Palestinians. It’s simply outrageous.

Earth to Israel! Hello! Settler-colonialism went out of fashion in the year 1890! Are you Jews living in a time machine?

I do not think we should say that Israel should not exist, but there is no way that we on the Left should support an insanely racist, apartheid, ethnic nationalist, basically national socialist or fascist, ongoing settler-colonial project in 2015. I do not see why we on the Alt Left should support any rightwing ethnic nationalists, fascists or National Socialists. We are nothing if we are not anti-Nazi, and I do not think that what are frankly Jew Nazis or Jewish national socialists should get a break from us.

I think we should allow moderate Zionists into the movement, especially those aligned with whatever remains there are of the Israeli Left, but I would say that hardline Zionists are very much going against the basic values of the Alternative Left.

I think we ought to point out that the Arabs seem to be promoting a racist ethnic nationalist project of their own in the region and the anti-Semitism and terrorism of the Arabs in general regarding this crisis is not acceptable. As I said, Nazis are not ok. And that means Arab Nazis. You want to kill all the Jews in Israel?

That makes you an Arab Nazi. Arab Nazis and Jew Nazis, what’s the difference? The Hell with both of them, really. I think the Alt Left ought to be pretty cynical and dubious about the extreme racism, genocidal talk and radical ethnic nationalism on both sides. I don’t see how replacing Jewish ethnic nationalists with Arab ethnic nationalists and killing lots of people in the process is something the Alt Left should support.

I really think we ought to be anti-imperialist at the minimum. How can be “left” at all and support US imperialism. We can allow liberal or leftwing supporters of US imperialism (yes, they do exist) into the movement, but support for US imperialism should definitely be contrary to the values of the Alternative Left.

Another Mass Shooting: Cedric Ford in Kansas

Looks like it happened only yesterday. He rampaged across two towns in Kansas shooting people. He killed 3 people  and wounded 14 others when it all ended. He lived in another town. The spree started when he shot a man in his town and stole the man’s truck, which he then drove to his workplace. Along the way, he shot a couple of more people. When he got to the workplace, he really opened up. There were 200-300 people in the building at the time. Police came and shot him dead.

He had been served with a restraining order at his workplace only 90 minutes before. The order, the second one of its kind, had been filed by his live-in girlfriend. She stated that he was in the process of moving out of the home he shared with her. This seems to have been what set him off.

Yeah, he’s Black. But race does not appear to be much of a factor in these mass shootings. Does anyone have any data showing that different races have differential rates of carrying out mass shootings? I’m not really seeing. I hear someone say, “mass shooting,” and right away, I think “White guy,” often “middle aged White guy.” Yes there are some Blacks carrying out rampages, but it doesn’t appear at first glance that they are doing it at a differential rate.

Shakespeare Updated

“First thing we do, let’s kill all the feminists.”

– Robert Lindsay, channeling William Shakespeare

I am serious.

Feminists need bullets.

These satanic harpies have for all intents and purposes declared war to the death against us men for the crime of having sex with females is how I see it.

They’re out to ruin our lives forever, get us put on fake sex offender lists for life, jail us for merely having sex with females of any age, imprison us for merely touching females of any age, jail us when girls pretend to be adults and trick us into sex, when  women say, “Don’t cum inside me!” and five minutes later we do, when we have sex with women with broken condoms, when we have sex with women without condoms, when we have sex with our own wives, when we use trickery to get a woman into bed (this is arguably the definition all of seduction – seduction is all about tricking women into bed), when we have sex with a drunken woman, when e don’t get consent from women in writing before we have sex with them (!?), when as children we play doctor with each other in childhood sex play, when as teenagers we take nude photos of our own selves (!?), when we pay legal aged teenage girls for sex, when we have sex with one of our legal aged or even adult students, when as teenagers we exchange nude pics of ourselves with each other, when as teenagers we talk dirty to each other on the phone, when as adults we talk dirty to teenage girls on the phone, when as adults we so much as kiss teenage girls, when as adults we so much as talk to teenage girls (!?), when we as 13 year olds run through the hallways slapping girls’ butts, when we misrepresent ourselves in order to have sex with women (which arguably is one of the essential methods of seduction).

The feminists want us arrested and strip searched, all of our possessions ransacked and some of them destroyed, charged with serious crimes that land us 10-20 years in prison, convicted of these crimes and sent to prison for decades, and put on the sex offender registry for all of time.

In other words, the feminists’ agenda is to destroy as many men’s lives as possible. Them’s fighting words, bitches.

We didn’t start this war, the feminists did. We didn’t ask for it, it came to us.

There will be no truces, no ceasefires, no armistices, no peace talks, no prisoner exchanges and of course no humanitarian missions. There won’t even be any refugees unless we men turn celibate.

This war will only end when one side takes out the other one. Either we take out the feminists, or the feminists take us out.

There will be no peace with the feminists.

The Sixth Decade of Life: Welcome to the Sexual Desert

SHI writes, referring to this post: I’m at 200+ already. How are threesomes supposed to be enumerated? Two or one notches in the bed?

It gets confusing when you have been in orgies involving multiple women and even men (not in a gay way though but it was a bit unnerving to see so many dicks on display). But the most decadent thing I ever participated in is something I simply don’t feel free to discuss. It was in Uzbekistan.

Add two for every threeway, but I’ve never been in one anyway. Never been in an orgy either. Threeway sounds interesting, but how often do you meet two hot women who both want to screw your brains out at once? Basically never.

I don’t like to call them notches, but a lot of men do.

I am at 111, for what it’s worth.

It was all about a huge complex to prove I wasn’t gay. I mean I know I’m not gay, but the complex is I think other people think I am. So the idea was I would try to break Wilt Chamberlain’s record, and then people would quit calling me gay.

It didn’t even work. All they did was start calling me bisexual! Thanks a lot! I finally sort of gave up when I realized that I could have screwed half the women in LA and I wouldn’t change even one mind. Anyway, as far as psychological complexes go, I must say that this has been one of the more fun ones.

Anyway, I am not even at Casanova’s, but that’s just fine. I think I am going to die at 111. It doesn’t look like I will be adding any new ones anytime soon or maybe ever. Oh well, it’s an interesting looking number, and plus it’s been a good ride. I can die happy right this minute.

Most of the women in my age range either look like wild animals, or they have simply given up sex and men altogether or honestly both. The % of women who give up all sex after age 52 is extremely high.

Menopause kills the female sex drive. Period. Of course women lie about this, but then women lie about everything. Women lie and say, “Oh no, menopause doesn’t kill women’s sex drives. It only does it for some women, and for others there is either no affect or it even increases their drive.”

I’ve known six postmenopausal women so far, and three women told me they were done with sex. One who said she wasn’t was not dating and didn’t seem to be interested in starting. The other was very nice, but sorry, I don’t want to date grandma. Another was apparently into it, but she was 67 years old, so I was a bit leery.

In my age bracket, 50% of married women had zero sex last year. Zero! As in none! Zero, sip, nada. And those are the married ones. For the single ones, it’s probably even worse.

For some stupid reason, I went to a meeting of the local Senior Singles up in the mountains. Apparently I am eligible, as you get in if you are over 55.

I figure there was one woman there who was still having sex, and supposedly she was only 54 but sneaking in. And she was making herself really inaccessible to me. All of the rest of the women seemed to have just about zero interest in meeting a man for dating or really for anything. The men didn’t seem to be interested in meeting women for dating or sex either. The guy across from me seemed like he was down, but the women he was hitting on (my aunt) was not interested.

This was a local singles meeting where nobody was trying to pick up on anybody! Nobody was looking for a date. Nobody was looking for sex. Nobody was looking for a relationship. Nobody was looking for anything! It was pretty incredible, but I guess this is it from now on in.

That was the stupidest singles meeting I have ever been to.

And at my age, I am basically an Omega as far as most young women are concerned. They are a very few young women who are into me, but that number is small. I think the % of young women who are into men my age must be vanishingly small. Granted, there are a few young women who are into guys my age, but I figure it’s less than 1%.

And most women in their 30’s and 40’s do not seem to be interested either. I don’t run into many of them, but the ones I do run into seem to be saying, “Get lost.” I think some women my age might be interested in me, but I take one look at them, and I wonder why they are not in a zoo instead of running loose in society. Think of the children! I look at them and I think, “Get away from me! You look like a monster!”

I’ve been doing great with women my whole life, and now it’s a desert, and I’m an Omega. What the Hell, man? What the Hell is going on?
