A 58-year-old Montville man who pleaded guilty in August to running a loan sharking operation that charged borrowers an annual interest rate of as much as 264 percent was sentenced yesterday to 6 years and 10 months in prison and a $40,000 fine, prosecutors said. Nicholas F. Mitarotonda admitted in court that he knew that people acting in his behalf had issued violent threats against one borrower whose payment was late, said Frederick R. Kessler, an assistant United States attorney.

Mr. Mitarotonda, who worked for the Gambino organized crime family, was also convicted in July of running an illegal $5 million gambling business, but those charges were dismissed in exchange for his plea, Mr. Kessler said.
