Diego Valeri scores fastest goal in MLS Cup history as Portland Timbers take early lead

It took just 27 seconds for the Portland Timbers to open the scoring in the 2015 MLS Cup.

Diego Valeri pounced on a mistake by Steve Clark to put the Timbers on top, sliding in to deflect the Crew SC goalkeeper's clearance into the back of his own net.

The goal was the fastest in MLS Cup history, a record previously shared by two goals scored in the fifth minute.

Eduardo Hurtado hit that mark in the inaugural MLS Cup in 1996, but the LA Galaxy failed to hold on to the lead as they fell 3-2 to D.C. United.

Seven years later, Ronnie Ekelund gave the San Jose Earthquakes a lead five minutes in as the Quakes went on to a 4-2 victory against the Chicago Fire.

Justin Meram scored the fastest goal in MLS Cup Playoff history earlier this postseason, needing just eight seconds to give Crew SC an early lead on the New York Red Bulls in Leg 1 of the Eastern Conference Championship.
