easyJet is the first airline to fly one million passengers from Glasgow in a year

easyJet is the first airline to  fly over one million passengers from Glasgow in a 12 month period. The airline has been committed to Glasgow Airport since its first ever flight from Luton to Glasgow in 1995.

easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has celebrated carrying over one million passengers from Glasgow Airport in a 12 month period, making it the first ever airline to do so from the Scottish airport.

easyJet celebrated the significant milestone by surprising one lucky passenger with a pair of free flights as they boarded their flight from Glasgow to Alicante and all passengers on board were treated to cupcake giveaways.

On 10 November 1995 easyJet’s first ever flight, EZY121 operated on a Boeing 737-200, took off from London Luton for Glasgow with Captain Fred Rivett at the controls. Since this first flight easyJet has remained committed to Glasgow airport by maintaining a continuous operation. The airline also celebrated flying over 30 million passengers to and from Glasgow this year.

The airline continues to see strong growth at Glasgow and now has an unrivalled network of 19 routes and bases four aircraft at the airport. In 2017 easyJet positioned a second A320 aircraft in Glasgow and has retrofitted its current Glasgow-based A320 to a 186-seat configuration.

Ali Gayward, UK Country Manager for easyJet, commented:

“This is a fantastic milestone for us.  Our first ever flight operated from London Luton to Glasgow and we are really excited to see more passengers than ever travelling with easyJet.

“We started with fares to Glasgow from £29 back 1995. Our fares to Glasgow start from £22.49* which is 22% cheaper.

“We have to thank our fantastic customers who travel to and from Glasgow for their loyalty and support.  We remain excited about the future of easyJet at Glasgow.”

Paul White, business development manager at Glasgow Airport, said:

“We are proud to help our airline partner easyJet celebrate this remarkable achievement.

“It was only six short months ago that we were celebrating the news the airline had carried 30 million passengers since arriving at Glasgow Airport in 1995.

“To carry one million passengers in a single year is a fantastic achievement and testament to easyJet’s enduring popularity with our passengers. Congratulations and long may this continue.”

easyJet is the largest airline in Scotland carrying almost one in three Scottish travellers and in calendar year 2018 will continue to grow as the number of seats on sale will increase around 5% to over eight million.

easyJet operates 838 flights in and out of Scotland per week in peak summer to 44 airports in 19 countries and links Scotland with some the largest European cities including Amsterdam, Paris, Athens, Milan, Prague and Berlin.

easyJet offers a diverse portfolio of routes in Scotland catering for outbound and inbound demand. Passenger traffic is an almost equal split in directionality with nearly half of passengers travelling inbound to Scotland delivering significant investment into Scotland.
