Interactive Technology and Ageing Populations

The conference hosts 120 participants from 20 different countries working on diversified fields like HCI, Accessibility, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Arts and Design.

Ageing is associated with a multitude of biological, cognitive, and social changes that impact the use of technology. These issues can seriously hamper usability. However, age also brings new opportunities, and for example increasing spare time, family connections, and learning/travel opportunities that well designed mobile apps could support.

The digital revolution has not adequately considered the needs of the ageing population. Although older adults constitute an increasing segment of the demographics, the majority of research on HCI, as well as industrial companies, focus mostly on younger adults. As a consequence, older adults may be losing the possible benefits and opportunities from this growing digital era.

The main goal of this symposium is to coordinate efforts and raise awareness on this important topic, specifically:

1. To strengthen the state-of-art by synthesizing research efforts that are presently fragmented over various disciplines
2. To develop a set of research practices and design guidelines to senior-centred computing
3. To build a community by bringing experts together from different disciplines including HCI, Cognitive Psychology, Gerontology, and Accessibility domains
4. To raise awareness among the community people in which issues about older adult have not been well considered.

All submitted papers will be subject to a double-blind review process. Accepted papers, after presented to the symposium, will be published in ACM Digital Library.  The authors of selected oral presentations will be invited to a special issue of the International SCI- or EI- indexed Journal after further revision.
