Adventure into the heart of the Peninsula on board the RCGS Resolute

Early December is probably Antarctica’s most beautiful time. Plentiful daylight shows icebergs at their sparkling best and there is a bounteous harvest of penguins, some of them hatching. On a fast ship listed as best in class with superb cabins and public areas and with a flexible itinerary, Paul, Mark and Chris plan on exploring both the Western Peninsula and indeed, ice permitting, the remarkable Eastern one through the Weddell Sea where the jewel of Paulet island with 100,000 Adelies is a seductive photographic treasure. Big ice, big rookeries, big ocean... big gigabytes.

Paul Goldstein, Expedition Leader
Exodus guide and award-winning photographer Paul Goldstein has often said that he is happiest on the plains of the Masai Mara or the decks of a Polar vessel. Having completed over twenty expeditions, his choice for our summer months is Spitsbergen, a programme he pioneered eight years ago. Exodus is now the market leader in small ship voyages there. Paul has a ridiculous amount of energy and is, as the Sunday Times described him, ‘a preposterously vivacious guide of almost psychotic gusto’.

Mark Carwardine, Expedition Leader
Mark Carwardine is a zoologist, an active and outspoken conservationist, an award-winning writer, a TV and radio presenter, a widely published wildlife photographer, a magazine columnist and a conservation consultant. He has written more than 50 books (including several bestsellers) and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles and has been writing a provocative monthly column in BBC Wildlife magazine since January 2004. He presented the popular six-part BBC-TV series Last Chance to See, with actor and comedian Stephen Fry, in which the unlikely duo travelled the world in search of a motley collection of endangered species (following in the footsteps of a similar journey Mark had made with Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, 20 years earlier), and for many years, he presented the weekly half-hour programme Nature on BBC Radio 4. He was also Chairman of the Judging Panel of the prestigious Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, jointly owned by BBC Wildlife magazine and the Natural History Museum, from 2005 until 2011. His own extensive collection of wildlife and conservation photographs, taken in more than 100 countries, is sold through this site and picture agencies around the world. He and Paul have worked together frequently and are an effective and invigorating partnership. They rarely agree with each other but both bring a lot to the polar picnic in terms of photography, knowledge and opinion!

Chris Packham – Expedition Leader
Chris Packham is, in the words of the Times is ‘the heir to David Attenborough’, a ‘national treasure’ (Metro) and has garnered many other hundred choice epithets on countless news websites. As a BBC presenter he is without peers, as a Conservationist he is top tier and never afraid of a fight and is particularly strident in championing causes of hen harriers, badgers and millions of songbirds butchered in the Mediterranean. He is the figurehead of the RSPB and he is a quite brilliant photographer. His pedigree has no equals and he is a hugely popular addition to our Polar expeditions.  He and Paul have worked together for many years and are quite a tag team, deep down there is a reluctant admiration but this rarely surfaces above the constant bickering! Chris has earned many legions of new fans with his recent programme on Asperger’s and his endless campaigning for causes is in keeping with the thoughts of many Exodus travellers. We are lucky to have him.

RCGS Resolute
Many consider the Resolute top of its class. It is luxurious, fast, with a high ice rating and yet still small enough to access the South’s many jewels.  WIth magnificent public areas and very smart en suite cabins it will be a more than capable base to launch excursions and sorties to the ice.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Start Ushuaia

    27 November 2018

There are no included activities today so you are free to arrive Ushuaia at any time. The group flights usually arrive in the early afternoon.

  • Day 2

    Embarkation on the Resolute

    28 November 2018

The morning is free to explore Ushuaia and the surrounding area, to do some last minute shopping, stroll around Ushuaia and down to the port or maybe take an excursion to Tierra del Fuego National Park. The transfer to the ship takes place in the afternoon. Once on board there is a get together for introductions to the expedition team, to learn about the ship and its layout, talk about the itinerary for the next 13 days and participate in the obligatory lifeboat drill.

    Meals included: Breakfast Dinner
  • Days 3-4

    Cross the Drake Passage

    29-30 November 2018

The vagaries of the Southern Ocean are well documented but this is a fast ship and if the passage is behaving we will be into the peninsula in quick time, giving precious extra hours in this captivating Polar wilderness. The Drake has some of the most dramatic sea bird activity anywhere so with a series of lectures and photographic tutorials plus deck time, the time will fly by.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Days 5-11

Explore the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

    1-7 December 2018

At this time of year there is plenty of daylight and Paul and Mark intend to maximise every minute of it. Weather permitting they will be making a concerted effort to get through the Eastern Peninsula to Paulet Island where a combination of the most spectacular tabular icebergs in the world and 100,000 Adelie penguins on Paulet Island are pretty seductive mating calls. Throughout the time there will be talks on all aspects of Antarctica from history, geology and of course the heroic age of Exploration.

Despite this being the finest ship in its class most of the time will be spent off it examining these priceless bays, harbours and ice shelfs of Antarctica. Whether on foot, Zodiac or on board it is a remarkable wilderness and deserves quality time which is what all participants will receive. Early December is an enticing time to be there as the ice is probably at its most beautiful, the penguin rookeries (Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adelie) overflowing and even a few of them hatching. There are always transient whales to be seen as well.

There is not a rigid, sterile itinerary on this expedition, there never is on these but Exodus are market leader on Polar charters and anyone participating will find out why: it is a tried and tested formula of spending a lot of time at the icy coal face with Mark and Paul at the helm. This is a journey rarely done more than once and no-one is going to be short-changed. The ship and staff will be doing their level best to roll with the capricious nature of the weather and this may involve some very early starts.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 12

    Leave Antarctica and head North

    8 December 2018

This journey may have been broken the day before by the South Shetland Islands and if the weather conditions are good an early landing at Half Moon island with its many Chinstraps.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 13

Sail back through the Drake Passage

    9 December 2018

We continue our journey North through the Drake Passage.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 14

    Disembark and end in Ushuaia

    10 December 2018

We arrive into Ushuaia early this morning where our adventure ends.

    Meals included: Breakfast

You’ll encounter truly breathtaking, exquisitely sculpted icebergs emerging from their frozen hibernation. Many of these pristine blue bergs house courting, nesting and brooding penguins.

Is this trip for you?

"I will never forget a visit to this frosted wonderland, ruled by imperious shuffling maritime mammals and busy penguins on nesting missions, all unperturbed by us, the gortex clad invaders. On the zodiacs we could get a closer look at the athletically agile oceanic alter egos of these creatures when they were joined by graceful humpback whales and glistening blue ice.... comfortable, great food, fabulous staff and guides. For unmatched photo opportunities, with maximum time to experience the incredible abundance of life, as well as to capture your treasured memories in pictures you will be proud to show off to friends and family there is no better guide than Paul Goldstein." Vanessa Lees

Travelling Conditions

The voyages are designed to be as flexible as possible, taking advantage of circumstances and events as they occur, as well as passengers’ wishes and particular interests wherever possible. The atmosphere onboard is relaxed and friendly with expedition staff, including naturalists and Polar experts, on hand and the opportunity to mingle with people from all over the world. The ship is kept warm, clean and comfortable with a wet/mud room in which to hang gear and store boots ready for the next adventure.

On the Zodiac cruises you are sitting still for most of the time with the potential for some sea spray and a cold headwind - if you are not dressed appropriately you will get cold. On the shore excursions, the majority of landings are ‘wet’ which means that the Zodiacs beach and you are helped to slide into the ankle deep shore break before walking up onto dry land (wellington boots are issued to all passengers).

There are, of course, no paths, so be prepared for slippery, rough terrain and sometimes fairly deep snow. Back on board the cosy ship after each adventure, you can have a sauna and/or a hot shower and then relax with a tea, coffee, hot chocolate or something stronger from the bar.
