Republic of Azerbaijan
Brazil and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations in October, 1993. Bilateral contacts were intensified with the reciprocal opening of resident Embassies. The Embassy of Brazil in Baku was installed in May, 2009 and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Brasília was opened in 2012.
In 1995, in the margins of the 50th United Nations General Assembly, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso met the then President Haydar Aliyev. In 2006, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov visited Brazil and met with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade and of Mines and Energy.
Since 2011, both countries are engaged, with the sponsorship of FAO and with the employment of Brazilian technology, in negotiations for developing trilateral cooperation projects in areas such as family farming and food security, in benefit of internally displaced populations due to the Nagorno- Karabakh conflict. The Brazilian Government and FAO also study the possibility of establishing cooperation with Azerbaijan in the area of microcredit to refugees.
Trade between the two countries grew more than five times in the last ten years. In 2012, Brazil exported US$ 34 million (basically meat) and imported US$ 180 thousand (derived products of coconut oil for cosmetics production). However, in 2013, trade values reached unprecedented level, considering that, last November, Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) ordered four E-190 aircrafts to EMBRAER and two E-170 aircrafts to ECC Leasing (EMBRAER subsidiary). Deliveries started in July, 2013, and the transaction is expected to reach a value of U.S. $ 230 million.
The Minister of Youth and Sports from Azerbaijan, Azad Rahimov, visited Brazil last April, when he met with the Minister of Sports, Aldo Rebelo, and signed cooperation agreement in the area of sports. In 2013, the Undersecretary-General responsible for trade promotion at Itamaraty, Ambassador Hadil Vianna, visited Baku, followed by representatives of Brazilian companies of food, infrastructure and defense.
In 2013, the 2nd Meeting of Political Consultations was held in Brazil, led by Under Secretariat-General for Political Affairs I of Itamaraty, Ambassador Antonio Carlos da Rocha Paranhos, and by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Araz Azimov – who, on the occasion, also met with the Minister of Defense and with Brazilian congressmen.

1997 – The chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan at the time, Rasul Guliyev, visits Brazil to negotiate the purchase of agricultural machinery, sugar and chicken; the formation of joint-ventures in the oil sector of the Caspian; the participation in the financing of projects in Azerbaijan and the presence of Brazilian companies in the country
2006 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, meets with Brazilian Ministers to build oil and gas pipelines in the Caspian Sea
2006 – Protocol on Political Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan
2009 – Brazil opens resident Embassy in Baku
2010 – Exchange of Notes on the Partial Exemption of Visa for Holders of Diplomatic, Official or Service Passports
2012 – Azerbaijan opens resident Embassy in Brasília
2013 – Visit to Brazil of the Minister of Sports, Azad Rahimov; Business Mission to Baku; celebration of twenty years of the establishment of diplomatic relations; Second Meeting of Political Consultations
