2018 Tuesday, January 9: The 60th Anniversary of the Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite will be Celebrated at the VSCDA ELVF, September 14-16, with Races, Special Events, Concours, and Special Paddock for Sprites and Midgets

The Bugeye Sprite was introduced at Monte Carlo on 20 May 1958, just prior to the Monaco Grand Prix, by the Donald Healey Motor Company as an economical follow up to the Austin Healey 100. The Sprite used a tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine, a partial monocoque chassis, and a mix of Austin and Morris parts to produce a small, light, high value sports car.

BMC's Competition Department immediately began entering the Bugeye Sprite in major international races and rallies. Their first major success came when a Bugeye driven by John Sprinzel won its class on the 1958 Alpine Rally. The Sprite debuted in the U.S. market in 1959 to by winning its class at the Sebring 12-hour and the Sebring Sprite became the iconic representative of the racing breed of Austin Healey Sprites. Private owners raced Sprites in period with the SCCA where they dominated H Production for many years. The body design had its first of several updates in 1961 and, at that point, was introduced in its second guise as the new MG Midget. The new body style lost the distinctive headlights that lead to the original being christened the Bugeye. However, enthusiasts soon labled the new cars with a new and lasting sobriquet, "spridget", a portmanteau of the combined Marque names. Today, fifty years after its introduction, the Sprite is popular on vintage race grids and has become increasingly collectible.

There will be many vintage racing events and special celebrations marking the Sprite's 60th. A major event that's sure to provide vintage racers and owners of street driven sprites a great opportunity to enjoy their car is the VSDCA Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival which takes place this September 14-18.

The event will feature an exclusive 60th Sprite / Midget Race with over 30 cars expected on the grid. There will be a special paddock near turn 5 for race cars and entrants will be encouraged to pitch their canopies together to provide spectator friendly access while ensuring your race trailer and equipment are nearby.

Street and show cars are not left out of the fun either. They will have an exclusive Sprite / Midget paddock area near the race cars, and owners will be offered a package that will include: special paddock space, Road America track touring, Banquet, Reenactment of Elkhart Lake Street Course and display in downtown Elkhart.

Another highlight is the Saturday Night Dinner / Banquet. This will be a special night with Road and Track Magazine's Peter Egan. Peter, in addition to entertaining us for years with his insights on Sports Cars and driving, began his racing career in a Bugeye Sprite. Finally, Sprite owners are encouraged to apply to the Gathering on the Green Concours that will have 20 openings for Street Sprites, Race Sprites, Special Bodied Sprites and Big Healeys.

2018 Wednesday, January 2: The 60th Anniversary of the Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite will be Celebrated at the VSCDA ELVF, September 14-16, and at Put-in-Bay, September 24-27.

The Austin Healey Sprite was introduced in 1958 as an affordable sports car. Lightweight unit construction, reliable 948 cc, 4 cylinder BMC pushrod engine, and compact size quickly made it a great SCCA H Production sports car.

Today, the "Bugeye" is much sought after, both as a fun driver and as a vintage race car. There will be many vintage racing events and special celebrations marking the Sprite's 60th. Two that offer vintage racers a great opportunity to enjoy their car are the VSDCA Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival and the Put-in-Bay Sports Car Races.

2018 Tuesday, January 2: It is a Happy New Year for West Coast Vintage Formula Junior Racers Who Are Confirmed to Participate as Group 4b at the 2018 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca.

Formula Juniors had arrived in force at North American race circuits by 1959, and saw large entry fields and numerous special features over the next four years. There were professional Formula Junior races at Laguna Seca on big spectator weekends. Big grids or 50+ cars were also featured at Sebring and during the Bahamas Speed Weeks. Today, Vintage Formula Junior races see cars participate from all eras of the formula. While the later cars certainly illustrate the progress in speed through technical development, the earlier front engine cars also provide exciting racing and the opportunity for spectators to experience one of the great eras in open wheel racing. Race entries for the Rolex event close January 31. Act now!!

2017 Friday, October 27th: Bonhams Auction November 11th Auction at the Bothwell Ranch in Los Angeles CA to Feature One of the Most Significant Vintage Race Cars Offered at Auction in 2017.

Bonhams auction on November 11 will feature cars from the fabled collection of Lindley Bothwell, including one of two remaining dual overhead camshaft four-valve Peugeots. The 1914 Peugeot L45 being offered was the spare car from Peugeot’s 1914 ACF Grand Prix at Lyon. It raced at Indianapolis in 1916 and placed second in the hands of Ralph Mulford and raced in again in 1919 where it was driven by Arthur H. Klein. The car was held by Klein until 1949 when it was acquired by Lindley Bothwell.

The car is original and as-raced. A close inspection of the bodywork reveals the original construction methods from 1914. The engine in particular can be noted for its incredible impact on America's racing heritage. Every DOHC engine racing can traces its architecture to the series of Peugeot GP cars built in 1911-1914 and their 3-litre voiturette Coupe de l’Auto counterparts. Importantly, the engine embodies a particularly influential relationship with the history of Indy. When Bob Burman blew up his 5.6-litre Peugeot at Point Loma in 1915 he took it to Harry Miller to be rebuilt. Miller and Fred Offenhauser absorbed its superiority and two generations of Miller, Offenhauser and Meyer and Drake engines that followed were inspired by Burman’s Peugeot.

Shortly after acquiring the Peugeot, Lindley Bothwell registered it as a competition car with AAA and entered it for the 1949 500. He posted a qualifying average of 103.24mph, faster than the Peugeots 1-lap qualifying in 1916 and 1919. It was on track for the 2003 and 2011 Goodwood Revival and an unjudged participant in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2014. The car is to be noted for its spectacular provenance, its significant contribution to racing history, fabulous aesthetics and represents an incredible opportunity to acquire one of the most significant vintage racing car offered at auction in 2017. 2017 Tuesday, August 22: Lime Rock Historics, Sept. 1-4 Adds Saturday Evening Gala with Haynes, Hobbs, Jones, Posey, and Collectibles Auction, Limited Seats Still Available

Lime Rock Park is throwing a party. A big one, on the evening of Saturday, September 2, during Historic Festival 35 presented by the Prestige Family of Fine Cars (Sept. 1-Sept 4).

The party is to not only celebrate 60 years of tradition, beauty, and speed at Lime Rock Park, but to also kickoff fundraising for the “Legends of Lime Rock” commemorative area in A Paddock.

It’s called the “60 Year Celebration”.

The celebration – cocktails, a sit-down, family style dinner, music, entertainment, auctions – will be highlighted by a special gathering of legends, people who are particularly important to Lime Rock’s history and legacy.

David Hobbs, PJ Jones, Sam Posey – all drivers at heart, of course, but each of whom became influential beyond the cockpit – will engage in a lively discussion. Expect invigorating repartee among these racing icons, and tales will surely be told that few have heard before.

  • David Hobbs: Aside from his exploits at Le Mans, as well as in F1, IMSA GT, the Indy 500 and even NASCAR, David’s biggest successes at Lime Rock were during F5000’s halcyon days. In the five F5000 races at Lime Rock between 1969 and 1972, Hobbs never qualified lower than fourth. He won twice (including during his 1971 title-winning year) and finished on the podium in two others. His lone LRP DNF was due to a diff failure in 1972, F5000’s last race here.

  • Sam Posey: Sam’s racing career was not only the equal of Hobbs in its diversity, but our hometown hero actually learned his craft at Lime Rock. Sam famously won the 1969 LRP Trans-Am race in a Shelby-run Mustang, subbing for Peter Revson, and won the IMSA GTU race two years in a row, 1978 and 1979. Motorsports’ reigning Renaissance Man par excellence is today a painter, writer, designer, broadcaster... Sam in person never fails to charm and enlighten.
  • PJ Jones: Representing 1990s-era Lime Rock during its IMSA Camel GTP heydays, PJ is not done racing; he’s a star in Robby Gordon’s spectacular Speed Energy Super Truck series and competes in the SCORE Baja off-road races. PJ, son of the legendary Parnelli Jones (who raced and won at Lime Rock in Trans-Am Mustangs), on Saturday, May 29, 1993, turned an amazing lap of :43.112 in his #98 All American Racers Toyota Eagle MkIII IMSA Camel GTP prototype during qualifying for the Toyota Trucks Lime Rock Grand Prix. And a quarter century later, this is still the lap record at Lime Rock! PJ is articulate, funny, engaging – and not afraid to go to-to-toe with Sam and David.
  • Jim Haynes: Flying up from Tampa, Fla., it was Jim's essential and creative management of Lime Rock in the 60s, 70s and early 80s that ensured the success we all enjoy today. As a driver, Jim won multiple SCCA National titles, but he’s best known for running Lime Rock with grace and wit. It’s not hyperbole to say Jim was a major force in American racing during his stewardship of Lime Rock. He was an important ally of John Bishop’s nascent IMSA series and was a leader in promoting vintage racing, helping it reach the astounding success it enjoys today. His post-LRP career – for nine years he ran Road America, a track similar to Lime Rock in appeal – gives Jim a unique perspective as he looks back on what Lime Rock means to him.

In addition, Historic Festival 35 Honored Guest Richard Attwood as well as Honored Collector Bruce Meyer will be in attendance.

Here are a few of the items and experiences at auction during the evening:

  • Lucas Oil Race School: Two-day accredited school, for two people
  • Lime Rock Drivers Club Track Day, in LRP Spec Miata race car includes overnight accommodations at Falls Village Inn

Tuesday, August 1: Automobilia Monterey for Original Collectibles – Tuesday, August 15 – Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Embassy Suites by Hilton Monterey Bay in Seaside, CA During the Monterey Classic Auto Week

August is always one of the big months for vintage auto art and collectibles: posters, event programs, auto badges, auto pieces, hood ornaments, and so much more. Organizer Tony Singer always has a great display of very collectible original racing event posters from way back until recent. Horton’s Books has a terrific and huge selection of books, many not seen elsewhere in the US except at his display at Amelia Island Concours. Some of the current top auto enthusiast book publishers have been seen there including Racemaker Press, Dalton Watson Fine Books, and Coterie Press. Goal: To salute 1965-1972 Formula B Cars with Special Vintage Racing Features, Stories and PR. They were the first successful SCCA amateur and pro open-wheel cars in North American road racing. This will be done by forming an Association and Registry and creating special vintage racing features.

  • The first special vintage racing feature is being held May 19-21 during the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Spring Classic with a FB Grid and Reunion presented by Victory Lane Magazine, celebrating the 1967-1972 SCCA Pro Continental Grand Prix Series, which initially featured FB cars. This 1967 series was won by Gus Hutchinson in a Lotus 41C.

  • Formula B Racing Cars of 1965-1972 are classic, mid-engine, open-wheel formula cars. They weigh about 950 pounds and started with 150 horsepower from 1600cc production-based but highly modified engines, mostly Lotus Ford twin-cam types. By the late 1960s, they had nearly 200hp and were capable of 160mph and incredible quickness and laptimes.

  • During the Spring Classic, there is a 4:30pm Saturday social with beer, soft drinks, and nibbles at Andrew Wait’s FB paddock. This is hosted by Victory Lane Magazine. There will be a driver group photo. There is a professional DVD video being made for entrants and short videos for future PR.

  • The short-term goal is three 2018 Formula B Features on the West Coast. There is interest in the Midwest and East by FB owners for features in their area.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Celebrates its 60th Anniversary in 2017 under SCRAMP management along with 2018 and 2019.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors today voted to accept County Staff’s recommendation to provide a three-year management agreement to the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula to ensure a robust 2017 racing season goes unimpeded and planning for the 2018 season may continue. The management agreement confirms that SCRAMP continues as the day-to-day management arm for the Monterey County-owned facility that SCRAMP built in 1957.

“We have been working very closely with County Staff over the past several months to develop a plan that builds upon this iconic facility’s heritage of delivering significant economic impact to the Central Coast,” explained Michael Smith, president of the SCRAMP Board of Governors. “We will celebrate this heritage throughout the year with 60th anniversary celebrations, culminating in a Racing Through the Decades feature at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August.”

This agreement allows SCRAMP to continue its 60-year mission that is dedicated to bringing world-class events to the Monterey Peninsula to benefit race fans, sponsors, charitable organizations and the community as a whole.

A 2015 study conducted by California State University, Monterey Bay College of Business reported the economic impact of the five major events held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was $62.1 million in direct spending by visitors and produced $5.2 million in state and local taxes. According to the report, “The direct spending included $13.8 million in lodging, incorporating 52,558 room nights in Monterey County; $18.6 million was spent on food and dining; and $12.3 million on retail.” These numbers include spending from non-county attendees only.

The 2017 major event season features Ferrari Challenge, May 12-14; Spring Classic vintage car and motorcycle races, May 19-21; Superbike World Championship, July 7-9; Monterey Pre-Reunion, August 12-13; Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 17-20; Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix, September 21-24; and the Pirelli World Challenge, October 12-15.

Perhaps the best choice is the fully vintage racing prepared car bought from a friend just off the race track and the friend guarantees to help prepare you and the car for school. That doesn’t happen often, but it’s a great idea.

There is also the car that the would-be racer is preparing in the garage or having done at the local vintage race prep shop whose schedule guarantees it will be ready for some assisted on-track tune and test sessions before school. Then again it may not be ready or reliable. I just listened to the sad tale of a lost vintage license opportunity due to lack of preparation and an unreliable car.

A good option for the upcoming VARA and CVAR schools is the availability of renting a guaranteed ready car available at both schools.

Info for VARA can be found at: http://www.vararacing.com.

Info for CVAR can be found at: http://www.corinthianvintagerace.com.

Road Atlanta, located north of Atlanta, Georgia, is a favorite vintage road racing circuit. Its 2.4 miles winds through valleys and over hills with 12 medium and fast turns. This world-class circuit has hosted all the great series.

HSR Atlanta Fall Historics have a full schedule of sprint races plus The Bob Woodman Tires International American Challenge and the BRM Chronographes Enduro Challenge. This is a good opportunity for both HSR and visiting racers to race on one of North America’s best road racing circuits.

2016 Wednesday, September 7: There is a Big Effort to Build Up the Annual SVRA Coronado Speed Festival, as a Major Attraction for Pre-War Car Owner/Drivers

There is currently an adequate entry for a grid but it is important to make a good showing to enhance the presentation and have a Pre-War race at this event each year.

Keeping this event on the Pre-War Sports and Racing Car Association schedule for 2017 along with the SVRA Sonoma Historics and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will help build other west coast Pre-War vintage racing opportunities.

Entry info can be found at: http://www.svra.com.
