Historic Six-Point Day today

The nation will observe the historic Six-Point Day today, marking the demand of the autonomy for the erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.
On the occasion, people will pay homage to those who laid down their lives on this day 46 years ago for the realisation of the six-point demand.
Awami League and its associate bodies and other political parties, socio-cultural and professional organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
In separate messages, President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and those martyred on June 7, 1966.
The president termed the six-point movement one of milestones of the country's struggle for independence, while Sheikh Hasina expressed her government's vow to free the country from exploitation and deprivation in the spirit of all democratic movements and struggles.
On June 7, 1966, AL under the leadership of Sheikh Mujib called for a daylong hartal throughout East Pakistan against exploitation, deprivation, subjugation and tyranny let loose by the Pakistani regime on the people of the province.
The six-point demand actually meant full autonomy for the then East Pakistan.
As people were observing the hartal across the province, law enforcers opened fire at different places, killing at least 11 people, including Manu Mian, Shafique, and Shamsul Haque.
